Gorilla Siblings That Get Along Too Well | The Shabani Family

October 2022.
Shabani's son Kiyomasa (9 years old) and daughter Annie (9 years old) are very close, but I sometimes see scenes where they are too close.
I just want them to be a close brother and sister relationship.

Kiyo is a silly funny mama's boy and Annie is a sweet lovable girl! While they only share a father together I don't see a problem. It's a common practice across species, in the southwest of America it' difficult to know who you're related to! LOL I must say Annie looks healthy and happy, not like when she was younger, may it's the love and tenderness from Kiyo that's made the difference!

To build a genetically healthy family, they must be separated. If what you say is true and they are copulating, they are very fortunate that Shabani has not seen them. But, I do agree with the majority, they need to start their own families soon.

@@klmollI watched when they were at there old home, and saw how sexual Shabani was towards Annie. She was constantly trying to get away from him and did her best to avoid him without much success. She spent much of her formative years unhappy and depressed because of Shabanni's behavior which is why I fail to understand or share how folks consider him a good father, I never have! However as many do across species dealing with those circumstances, Annie survived physically and emotionally and for that I'm grateful!

I guess as long as the female is on birth control and the male doesn’t get beaten up by Shabani, it’s not the end of the world for these half siblings, but it’s not going to go over well with human sensibilities of course. They probably have to move the young male to a bachelor group?

Primates, like humans, can still get pregnant on birth control. It does occasionally happen. Annie was not penetrated in this video. Males will hump each other (no penetration). Bonobos will have sex as a means of resolving conflict. They will do it with same sex and with their children. Young male chimpanzees and orangutans will simulate mating with adults, even their own mothers. By human standards this would be wrong. By primate standards they are simply just learning and exploring. They don’t have our moral and social constructs.

Oh my goodness you did not just say that. Male gorillas leave their family to join bachelor groups in the wild, because the Silverbacks don't tolerate other adult males breeding with their females. This also prevents inbreeding which creates sickly babies. Comparing them to human slaves when these are animals is insane.

Didn’t seem like anything was consummated in this vid-just a lot of fun fooling around. I don’t know why but this doesn’t bother me, as long as Annie’s on birth control. This is how gorillas learn, if they’re lucky enough. Momo missed it all. And a year or two from now, when I hope a sweeping new landscape is available, Annie will be seducing Gentaro in grand style-not needing the back seat of a racy convertible! I worry most about her maternal instincts, with her having been hand-raised-but there are videos of birthing and nursing, and instruction with dolls, that have helped other mothers-to-be. Meanwhile, try to remember that gorilla culture has no organized religion or sexual mores. They’re just doing what they do!

Annie is extremely valuable to the Japan gorillas as she isn't directly related to anyone-it would be a shame if she mated with her own brother (half) but still related-if this happens, you can forget about Gentaro getting her until much later rather than sooner. I hope this zoo has her on BC-we have all been hoping for the best for Gentaro and Annie for several years now.

Agree. I think ( despite her hard beginning ) Annie will be a loving Mommy. Annie has such a tender heart ( I think she takes after her Dad ) and notice through the years how she loved watching & playing with human kids/babies through the glass. She watched Nene mother Kyo and although that was heartbreaking to me what she must have felt watching her brother get so much protection, affection and love from a mother when she didn't get that, I think there is a very sweet heart in Annie and I do think she will be a good mommy. Daddy and Kyomasa saved her. They gave her so much love and affection and Annie is Daddy's girl, he will always watch over her and protect her. As you wrote, they are experimenting , they must have hormones and urges and learning and figuring things out. But, they have a very special bond and I feel so bad for the parents. I wish there were more babies here because when they move on to make their own families, I cannot imagine the heartache and loss the adults will suffer. Shabani is a wonderful Daddy and loves his Gorilla kids so much. I always felt that Nene is still alive at this age because of Kiyomasa, her little Prince. She still dotes on him and protects him. I think, sadly, when he moves on, it will kill her. There are no kids left to distract them or ease the pain. Then what? Sad. I hope Annie is matched with Sweet Gentaro. Time will tell. We all love these Gorillas so much and I hope they are happy as time goes on.

@@maryeddy4871 Mary, thank you so much for sharing all your sweet history with this troop! Makes me feel much relieved about Annie’s taking to mothering. Yay! There are actually a lot of us worried about Shabani when he has to part with his dear kids, his whole reason for being. I hadn’t thought about Kiyo’s departure being the end of Nene, but you’re surely right. Although I had wondered, if upon her passing, it would be thinkable to bring in one or two young wives for Shabani, and how that might effect Ai. Or if Ai will be taken off birth control and how that might go with her attitude toward mothering now that she’s older. BUT then, there’s the problem of overseas zoos not wanting to send gorilla ladies to Japan. How did Taipei manage it? What better circumstances do they have, that Japan might strive for? Is it the animal health and welfare regs, or solely the funding set up, and its not being a more lucrative private foundation? So many questions!!! Yet it seems if there are answers out there to be found, maybe we could all be encouraging things in some good direction.

He is a pest, will never try to be protective n kind to the weak ones. He needs to be castrated and put into a solo box, or with other males which are elder and way more handy and strong and show him who's boss. Any female or youngster, forced to enďure him, is pure cruelty. Annie had such a sad childhood. There are many males in bachelor groups. She literally can choose.
