Gorgeous Warbird With a Few Unfortunate Issues - FMS F4U Corsair 1700mm

Ойын-сауық

The FMS 1700mm F4U Corsair is gorgeous, absolutely stunning. Flies great - but the tailwheel and landing gear mounts need some work. In this vid, we cover how to fix the tailwheel and how to fix the main retracts so that they don't wobble anymore. Hopefully FMS fixes these issues going forward.

This plane holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather flew one in WW2 (Marines). He would tell me the stories but what I remembered the most was how in detail how he explained how the Cosair handled. Now that being said, yes this plane NEEDS about 20 to 30 percent more power. I'm on my second one because we'll the first one blew the front end ( 8s). Blew up is being kind😅. By that time Jon I experienced everything you just pointed out. So I decided what would make this plane better. You know RC folks when there is a challenge.

I have the Flightline F4U Corsair, over 200 flights and still perfect like when I opened the box. Probably the best epo warbird I have ever used, 6s 5000 with 13 minutes of high speed flying and super solid retracts!

Actually, to fly a warbird scale you need enough power to perform big vertical maneuvers. I shoot for a compromise in scale maneuver size and timing. For instance, my loop would be a bit bigger than scale, but that increases the time it takes to complete it. With the model it would still be completed in less time than it would take the full scale counterpart to perform one at an airshow, but the timing will be closer if you cheat the spacing a bit. Over all, it appears more realistic, but requires more power. Nice review man, and yep, this one needs a power upgrade.

It'd be nice if people would stop bashing stuff as not being "scale" just because it has enough power to do interesting things.

Shoot. If it has the power to take off, that's interesting enough for me. Everything after that, is just me crappin my pants, wondering what's gonna break when I land. And how much it'll cost...my wife's credit card 😊

Thanks for posting this one Jon! Greatly review as usual. The retract and tail wheel issues have haunted me too on certain models from this producer.I can’t wait to make time for putting together my new 1700 P-51 with the bigger motor and posting to your discord channel. This may be a great option to spruce things up a bit for those that want more power.

I found a company in California that makes CNC parts for RC planes and vehicles. I sent them the whole hub and prop assembly, and they made the whole hub aircraft grade aluminum, including the screw on prop adapter. Price wasn't too bad either, and the plane looks pretty cool, too. I bought a Cobra 250kv motor, and I already had an HV120 amp ESC. The tricky part was finding a company that would make the props. That was the biggest issue and why it blew. I didn't realize it or overlooked it, but the stock props could not handle the 8s RPMs, and at higher rpms, there is oscillation, and the props literally exploded Anyway, long story short, I found a company and sent them the stock props and told them the range of rpms and motor I would be using and presto, I had stiffer props (carbon fiber infused plastic). I also tore apart 😢the crashed cosair so I could really examine it. So the second one I expoxied the gear, did the same fix you did on the tail. Installed new prop hub assembly and also redid the motor mount so it would fit the different cross plate. Jon it now flies like a Cosair should. It's not overly powerful but it does boogie. Those slow lazy barrel rolls and big scale loops and your not at constant full throttle. Anyway great review as always and I apologize for the long post but the Cosair is a special plane to me and I just had to do it justice.

@TwoBrosRC It was quite a bit of effort, but it flies like it should now. Something that should have been done by the factory. I went above and beyond, but all it would need is a stiffer prop and the same size motor with at least a 120amp esc. The plane is a tough plane. I also forgot to mention that it's one of the few planes that has a metal spar about 1 foot long and about 2 inches wide above the gear and is bent like with the gullwing. My first one, like I said, I tore it apart and suspected there was something in the wing cause of the weight, and sure enough, there is a metal spar.

I've become much more comfortable with my left stick practicing long dragged out landings on my Maule. That doodoo floppy tailwheel doesnt play well with the rough pavement i fly it from. So, ive adapted. I appreciate the blooper reel. I feel a little better about how crappy the maiden flight of my FMS 980mm p40 went for me. Well, for IT, mostly. Currently steaming up some h20 for the crinkles in the nose... anyway, thanks for sharing the bad with the good, so we can all enjoy those moments together 😊 👍

The bigger they are, the easier they tend to be to fly throughout the envelope. The smaller warbirds can easily torque themselves off a runway. Bigger ones can too, but you get more time to react to it. Happy to hear you're enjoying the progression!

F4U looks good in the air but high stall speed makes it hard to land due to seagull wing design. I kept crashing the 1200mm version one, so I never liked it. The FMS P40B is just much more enjoyable to fly. Faster, and more manoeuvrable
