Bing Crosby is probably the oldest singer and one of the oldest actors that's still popular today, since he started singing with The Rhythm Boys (Paul Whiteman's vocal refrain group) in the late 1920's and first starred in The King of Jazz from 1930 (which is about Paul Whiteman's orchestra. The name tells you how popular he was. Unfortunately, the king of Jazz isn't as popular as the king of rock or the king of pop). The only 1930's movie most people know of is The Wizard of Oz, but most of them don't even know it is a 1930's movie. The only known actor of The Wizard of Oz is Judy Garland, who played Dorothy, but i'm pretty sure she was more popular in the 1940's. The others are just unknown actors today. I have seen a video clip from a 1930 movie called "Follow Thru'", which featured the actor who played the Tin-Man from The Wizard of Oz singing "Button Up Your Overcoat" along with a female actor. Most actors and singers from the early-to-mid 20th century are unknown to most people. The 1910's had singers like Billy Murray and Al Jolson, who were really popular back then but are now mostly forgotten. Al Jolson is now remembered as the main actor from The Jazz Singer, which was the first talking picture. Talking pictures in the 1920's had actors like Lawrence Gray and Charles King, which are both forgotten today. Then there are actors which are so obscure, they don't even have a picture or enough information about them, like James Clemens, who played a singing showman in the title song of a lost movie from 1929 called "Red Hot Rhythm", and it's the only scene from the movie that still exists. I would trade the fame of all modern mainstream actors of today for the fame of all the old actors. The same goes for singers.

How come the composer of the music, Harry Warren, is not mentioned? Other great composers of American song always get credited for their work, on theater billings, etc, and youtube performances, but Harry Warren, composer of over 800 songs and some of the biggest hits in history, is just totally neglected. What is going on with that? Maybe some kind of prejudice against Italians? (his real name is Salvatore Antonio Guaragna). Composer of At Last, You'll Never Know, Serenade in Blue, That's Amore, September in the Rain, Chattanooga Choo Choo, An Affair to Remember, 42nd Street, We're in the Money, etc., and you never heard of him, his name never shows up. Fame is peculiar. In his day Macrea was a superstar, now not so. Yet, we remember Bing (& may he never be forgotten), Sinatra (Hello Grammies, my names Sinatra!), Louis & Elvis. I wonder why some singers/performers are more memorable.

MacRae destroyed his career with his drinking. I don't know why someone as handsome and talented as he was had to drink to excess. It was bad enough that his movie career ended abruptly in 1956. he became very unreliable.

@@joep8787 Addiction is hard to explain or fathom. Sometimes the most gifted can be the most self-destructive. His gambling addiction may have been even worse than the drinking. I've heard that even after he became the spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous in the '70's he refused to admit that he himself was an alcoholic. A terrible shame!

He is one thing but the piano player was something else ... Fantastic .

That was some fine dancing.
Phenomenal. What a stunning voice. You can tell he also had exceptional vocal training. So terrible that he smoked and drank heavily and ended up with mouth and throat cancer.
What a man ❤️
Love this version...See Doris Day...she sang the song too, perfect song...
RIP Gordon MacRae (1921-1986).
Beautiful masculine voice like Vic Damone
Lyrics Are the stars out tonight? I don't know if it's cloudy or bright 'Cause I only have eyes for you, dear The Moon may be high But I can't see a thing in the sky 'Cause I only have eyes for you I don't know if we're in a garden Or on a crowded avenue You are here, so am I Maybe millions of people go by But they all disappear from view And I only have eyes for you I don't know if we're in a garden Or on a crowded avenue You are here, so am I Maybe millions of people go by But they all disappear from view And I only have eyes for you

Strange.

He had a lovely voice but this song totally belonged to Al Jolson …….sorry
he had too much voice for this kind of crooning, so he goes nasal.
