As a young boy who was inspired by Gordon Banks to play in the nets,I used to write to all my heroes back in the day for an autograph or a photo and the only one who replied was Gordon Banks! Not only did he reply with a signed photo but a letter as well ! Pure class! A true legend of the game and the best ever keeper! A true gentleman whose outstanding goalkeeping will never be equalled!

Thank you for sharing a wonderful story about one of the soccer legends.. I was a teenager in Iraq and purchased a book about the 100 legends of soccer, and Banks was one of those legends even though I never watched any match for him but I really inspired by his story on that book.His incredible save against Pele during World Cup 1970 was mentioned, too. By the way I am a Manchester United fan since I was 11 years old..

48 years on, and still the greatest save ever. I've seen it so many times, but this is the first time I kept my eyes on Pele as Banks made the save. It was such a brilliant header that bounced in the most awkward spot for a keeper, and Pele reacted as if he'd had his wallet stolen!

@Raymond raymondson i`m 62 and as a kid remember the old boys talking about Charles in the same way. Quite a few also mentioned Duncan edwards and said if he`d lived he`d have become the greatest ever.

@@MrRainjunkyBobby Charlton once said that Edwards was the only player who really scared him. The only player that came close to his skill set was Franz Beckenbauer. I would have loved to see those two go at it. Horrible, horrible loss for Manchester United and England.

Back in the early 80's Gordon was in Berlin and took time out to visit 38 (Berlin) Field Squadron RE. We enjoyed his company for several hours in the Sappers Bar on camp, where we listened to his football tales and got thoroughly drunk. The loss of his eye never deterred his commitment to the public. He was a very kind gentleman and a true patriot, moreover he was a first class ambassador for his country. We were very happy young soldiers the day Gordon visited us in our squadron bar.

Chesterfield's finest and England's best ever goalie. A true legend. Gone but he'll never be forgotten. RIP Gordon.

I remember going to Wembley with my dad to watch England play Spain in 1968 a European championship qtr final.England beat Spain 1-0.Bobby Charlton scored. I was behind the goal when Banks pulled of a save .It looked a certain goal for Spain.A cross come over on the ground.Their centre forward back heeled the ball it was heading in the corner.Banks came from nowhere,and knocked it behind.I always thought it was a tremendous save. But it is never on the TV. Banks was a brilliant keeper.

This clip lasts 3:19 from a time when there were no cameras at most of the games , unlike today when every game has a dozen or so filming every bit of action , so just how many great saves did he make that only those at the games were privileged enough to witness , had he been playing today you could sit and watch his incredible ability for hours . I watched the game live when I was a boy, visiting the UK for two years from America. I became a lifelong football fan in those two years.

An all time great and one of the greatest the game has ever seen. Lightning reflexes, speed, fantastic positional sense as well as bravery he had it all. A great goalkeeper thanks for the memories Gordon Banks RIP.

That 1970 save was Remarkable and I remember it as if it was yesterday sir.My team then was Wolves and we had a Fab set up like Doogan Bailey Parkes and Wagstaff..and half a Crown to go in .May I ask were r U from sir. Gordon banks was ahead of his time he would have been worth millions today I grew up idoliziing gordon banks I'm a scotsman but he was my football hero I even had gordon banks gloves which I saved up to buy from. Local sports store I've read two of his books today's players could learn a lot from gordon banks as a human being he just a down to earth guy never be another gordon banks

The late Gordon Banks was arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all time. Because of Banks England won the 1966 World Cup.Had not Banks made that miraculous fantastic save from Eusebio in the final minute when England were leading 2-1 who knows what might have been the outcome in the semifinal had it gone to extra time. If Banks had not had the stomach upset England would and could have beaten West Germany in the 1970 World Cup quarter finals at Leon.His deputy Peter Bonetti made a mess out of it and it cost England a place in the semifinals. But what stands out even today and still fondly remembered by many is Bank's save from Pele in the group three decider at Guadalajahara.Pele's point blank header was a sure goal for Brazil but Banks leaping like a gazelle out of no where fisted the ball over the bar.It is the "Save of the Century". Gordon Banks RIP.

Lorne Cheetham - Banks said it was his best ever save! Even at quarter speed it's a lightning reaction, his teammates can't believe he saved it.

Yes, we were extremely lucky as England fans to have Gordon Banks in goal, he saved England many times, and his save from Pele's downward header, in the 1970 World Cup was legendary!

It`s that penalty save from Geoff Hurst I keep coming back for. Astonishing!

Great goalkeeper, great defense against Pele's header !! For this video, many good defenses. Possibly any other goalkeeper at that moment would not be able to defend! Banks could have been the right goalkeeper, at the right time, in the right place. Congratulations! From Brazil!

Yachine et Banks ont créé le poste de gardien de but moderne (lors de la coupe du monde 1966). Ceux qui sont venus après (maier, zoff...) en sont les héritiers. L'arrêt qu'il réalise sur la tête de Pelé n'est pas le plus beau. Il n'était pas si spectaculaire mais, très efficace (le match retour contre la RFA en 1971 est un modèle).
