He'd be the most capped player ever, if Greenwood hadn't been so indecisive about playing him or Clemence. Bobby Robson said that he wasn't just in the same bracket as Banks or Yashin, they should both feel honoured to be compared to Shilton. I don't know about that but Sir Bobby knew more than most.

Many, many saves not televised. Saw him vs Reds in the 80s when he was playing for Saints and he was awesome. Best player I ever saw.

Remember watching him during Forest's run to the First Division championship. He was the most spectacular player on the pitch.

Without question, one of the best England goalkeepers of all time. His mentor Gordon Banks was also magnificent. There is nothing to choose between them and nobody compares to these 2 great legends. Amazing reflex saves, brave and strong. Love it, love it, love it!!

That Forest Coventry game …. Forest needed to avoid defeat to take the title. Legend has it that Cloughie turns up at the ground on the day of the game to find Shilton alone in the dressing room, unusually early, still suited, head in hands. When asked what the trouble was Shilts tells Clough that he is in debt to a bookie for a rather large amount. Clough listens fatherly and tells Shilts to wait right there and disappears. Ten minutes later he returns with a cheque made out to Shilts signed by the chairman for the said amount. A delighted and extremely grateful Shilton is told that his thanks were not required and to just go out there and win him that title. And that he did, one of several brilliant saves featured in this vid, keeping a clean sheet and earning a below par Forest the draw they needed. After the game Clough goes to Shilton and is gushing with praise and adulation for his magnificent performance before saying 'now give me that f****ng cheque back!' Anecdote over. I never understood how Clemence played for England at all. Not knocking him but Shilton, for me, was simply much much better.

As a Forest supporter back then, I preferred Shilton over Clemence but to ask why Clemence played for England as well is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. For God's sake, Clemence was one of the world's best goalies in the world. His record of clean sheets, goals conceded and titles talk. Clemence is the most underrated goalkeeper in football history.

So proud to have grown up watching Shilton progress to the highest rank of best ever goal keeper. No other keeper stopped shots like he did.

Regardless of what you think of him off the field, the guy was completely fearless and had insane reflexes

Derby fan, loved seeing him even in his 'late days' He was amazing even for our rivals Forest, 2 Cups? fair play lads.

Thanks for the memories. I grew up with Peter Shilton always playing for England and how badly they have missed a keeper of this calibre in recent years. David Seaman was very good, just no Shilton, and nevermind the rest.

Robinson was a very good shot stopper...but yep Shlton was different order from Seaman, its often interesting to claim otherwise...he was almost a class apart...Its like comparing Ince with Bryan Robson, Ince was very good, but no Robson...

Shilts was the master, your right Seaman was a decent keeper, forget the rest..Shilts understudy for about 8 years Chris Woods, He was class, He got in once Shilts retired from international football and went on to make 33 caps..

Used to drink with a saints fan back in early 2000s, he was a southampton season ticket holder in the 80s,shilton was there player of the year 2 years running I think 85 and 86.he said some of his best games and saves you will never see due to lack of televised football then.won games and points on his own.he had the knack of making it look spectacular though😉.they closed the local pub down, never saw saints fan again.forgot his name aswell.but nice you could just meet and chat to people like that.fear pubs never be same again.

A few years back, Nottingham Forest held a vote to determine their greatest ever eleven. Shilton won the goalkeeper’s position with 97% of the vote - the second-placed Forest keeper got 2%. 2:00 is the save against Coventry which won us the league title in ‘78.

Only saw the end of his career and he was way passed it,played far too long for England. But my brother is a Forest fan and said he won at least 18 points for forest when they won league with his saves. No doubt a worldy in his day but he was a moaning,whinging prick as well,the most blameless GK ever.. Neville Southall was better!!!

He was sadly past it by Italia 90. Shouldn’t have been the keeper for that tournament, he let in some sloppy goals. A fantastic keeper in his day but there’s no room for sentiment in football. With a younger more agile keeper England would have got to the final against an inferior Argentina.

@Wisty Boy I had been waiting to see Chris Woods, at least at WC 90. Sadly, even in the unimportant match vs Italy, Bobby Robson still chose Shilton. Perhaps, Robson wanted to let Shilton got the most cap for England. Interesting you mentioned John Lukic. I read at Euro 88, England had only two GKs. I don't know why Gary Bailey was not in the squad, but they still had John Lukic who was never called for senior team. Btw, I remember Bobby Robson said that if Bruce Grobbelaar was English man, he would have picked the Liverpool eccentric GK as the number 1.

Superb - along with Big Nev best British goalkeeper of my supporting life - saw tail end of Jennings and missed out on Banks I think that quartet is the Top Table from these islands.

I agree with you..Clemence was at the back of a great team..nearly always clean sheets..Clough ie toot Shilts to Forrest The rest is history..When Clemence left Lpool to Spurs he was terrible..My opinion he was lucky to get 70 odd caps..Shilts should have had 200 plus. .Burnley Fan.

Certainly one of the best goal keepers in the world in his prime and as far as home grown keepers go, I rate him second behind the late great Gordon Banks.

In my book I would say Peter Shilton was not only my hero as a child but the best keeper of all time.

I don't see any modern PL keeper making these kind of saves ever again tbh. That header at 2:00 and that insane challenge at :58 wow. And bearing in mind he was only 6'0 - short for a goalkeeper by today's standards

When I was 11 years old used to yell out his name whenever I made a save footballing with my peers...

Yep he was Brett. Shame he was around the time as Shilts..He was understudy for years..However when Shilts retired in 1990 Chris won 30 odd caps..

A brilliant keep for sure - I do wonder, though, why none of the big clubs made a move for him. Like the great Gordon Banks, Shilton only played for smaller clubs - Leicester, Stoke, Forest, Southampton.

yashioman Neuer, Oliver Kahn and Buffon have all surpassed Shilton. Previously it was much easier for keepers as defenders could pass back to the keeper and they were allowed to pick it up. Nowadays keepers can't do that.

yashioman back in the day's was so much hard play as a goalkeeper the gloves was horrible the ball was more heavy and the greatest goalkeeper's have between 5.9, 6.0, 6.1 feet tall but the best quality and skills. But today a lot goalkeeper's have 6.4 but with SHITTY skills no quality at all. I prefer the vintage's goalkeeper's

I doubt whether the lightweight balls of today are easier for goalkeepers to catch than those heavier balls of past years, at least in terms of speed and trajectory

Владимир Клюев in fact the ball's of today is more easily to catch because in the past the goalkeeper didn't have gloves to wear and all of them have to play with no gloves which injured and deformed the hand's and fingers of them because the ball's was more heavily

+iago ANDRADE I was a Keeper myself.The only time l wore gloves if it was a muddy pitch or a wet ball.. Football's were a lot heavier.

Shilts was worth 20 points alone the year Forest won the old League One title in 77-78. Along with Banks, he was one of the the two best keepers England has produced and there have been many over the years. Odd that in an age where the game has moved on, mostly for the better, goalkeeping standards are pretty much abysmal.

young shilts was one of the greatest ever.

I remember the scene of 1:15. I watch this match by TV from japan at Live.

The thing about Peter was he was so reliable. Most goalies have a lapse every now and then and let in a silly goal. Peter, almost never. Maybe once per 100 matches.

Shilton was the best, always in great position. England have no one since!

Clemence was a fine keeperFor Liverpool,but I think Banks and Shilton were the best.Shilton played 125 games for England.🇬🇧⚽️🙂

Ray Clemence was very good and made it look easy. Peter was more of a spectacular shot stopper so his highlights look way better. both would be by far the most capped player if not for each other. I preferred watching Shilts. I honestly think there wasn't much between them overall. Just good at different aspects of the game.

As a life long forest fan, when I was younger all my mates wanted to be Birtles or woodcock I wanted to be shilts. If Wayne hennersey had a 1/4 of the talent of Shilts we may not be the bottom of the prem.

And yes, my fave football goalkeeper of all time (my favourite ice hockey netminder is #33 Craig Kowalski, formally of the awesome Nottingham Panthers!) 👍👍👍

+Alan Severn I wasn't being a smartarse Alan but Shilts was my goalkeeper idol..We were spoilt for Keepers. Chris Wood, Joe Corrigan, ray Clemence etc kept out by Shilts..Just think when England won the world Cup back in 66. Banks Leicesters Keeper let him go to Stoke aged 28, they put their faith in 16 year old Shilts.Dont think this kind we'll quite see the likes of him again. I was a Keeper myself for many years,and played at a good level. Have a good day👍

Football has changed a lot over recent years. Sadly Alan its become big business especially in the Premier League..Foreign owners coming in, with no passion for the Club..Im a Lancashire Lad that's lived in The west country (Devon) for many years.I get up to see Burnley as much as I can during the season. Ice Hockey Ive watched very little of, I'll give it a go.
