Apparently, it was popular in France and Germany, so it achieved a very important goal - bringing people together for a good laugh.

As a German I can"t really confirm that it was popular in Germany. I love it, discovered the programme as I was able to pick up terrestrial SSVC TV and dutch TV. I think it was most popular in countries that suffered heavily under Nazi Germany like Poland.

I love this show and re-watch the episodes regularly. Years ago I worked on an IT project her in Belgium in the mid 1990's with three other fans and we used to talk to one another using the same "accents". One day we had three Canadians joining the project and they couldn't understand why we used those silly accents when we discussed things but switched to correct English when we had to talk to them. Lots of fun that was!

We flew René to Heathrow and because the flight was full , he sat on the jump seat and we chatted when we weren’t too busy. During the cruise I asked if he would make the pa to the passengers but he politely declined. However as the flight progressed he became more relaxed and he was very funny. The one I remember was along the lines of Lufthansa still flying low over London to avoid the radar. Afterwards I regretted not giving him a “typical “ pa as a preparatory script, because I’m sure he would have had the passengers in stitches.

I am genuinely sorry for those who go out of their way to find offence in comedy, to them everything is contrary to an "ism" they say they feel "abused" or "mortally offended" by this sort of comedy. I saw a comment about the TV how "love thy neighbour" remember that? The person was scathing about how it was racist, sexist and every other ist, but they were probably not even born when it aired so just could not see how that show helped to combat racism by making racist look so stupid and idiotic and importantly making people think!

Bloody hilarious. I still watch the programme. A piss-take of all the European armies/ nations involved especially the Charles de Gaulle character (policeman). I had a German friend who rolled around the floor in hysterics when watching it. People complained? Really? Shame🤣

I had the "pleasure" of having to deal with Gordon Kaye on a regular basis. He was a regular customer of a company I worked for. A more unhelpful self obsessed pillock I never met elsewhere. You get a whiff of that in these interviews. Sam otoh was a wonderful man with s superb line in stories of the many great actors he worked with over the years loved Allo Allo mind you, one the best
