    I have an SJ6 Legend which has just died. I loved that camera much more so than my GoPro Hero 5 which has been nothing but trouble even though it is treated with kid gloves, while the SJ Cam had a much harder life. So after this review I have decided to get the SJ8 Pro. Thank you. oh and you also have a new subscriber!

    Thanks so much! The 1080p is pretty nice, 720 less so, but if you want 240fps it's useable I guess. I'd personally stick to 1080p and up. It upscales fairly well to 4K but it will also depend on the amount of movement in the frame because of the bit rate which drops down quite a bit in 1080p.

    Great review. Thank you. I have the same action camera (SJ8 Pro). However I still have problem trying to get the optimal microphone setting ("Volume" setting on the SJ8 Pro). I had to crank the Volume (microphone sensitivity) to 9 or 10 to get decent audio recording. However this resulted in a loud hiss with audio recording. Reducing the Volume to "6" will eliminate the hiss sound. However at "6" the recorded audio is hardly audible. Wondering if you have the same issue. What is your Volume (Microphone sensitivity)? Do you have hiss sound issue with your recording? Thanks in advance.

    Hey thanks for the comment! I actually can't check at the moment because I've lent it to a friend, but I never really counted on the audio personally. Without a case it's okay, if your noise is close to the mic but it definitely won't be great. They do have a lav mic that can plug into it and should give you better audio for talking, but that also requires you to use it without the case.

    Yeah I definitely had my share of complaints with the GoPro as well and SJCam actually told me there's a shockingly high failure rate with GoPro's "waterproofing" which is one of the reasons they decided against it. Love the idea of it though, hope someone can make one that works more consistently.

    I have now switched to the GoPro Hero 7 Black....My SJCAM SJ8 Pro broke within a couple of months of using it (shut off and wouldn't turn on at all). SJCAM told me to contact the seller which I did who offered to send me a new one...it never arrived. They supposedly sent a second (from Malaysia again) it never arrived again. Then the seller said they would refund me...never happened despite repeated promises. I contacted SJCAM to tell them I wanted to get a replacement and sent them video of the malfunction (like I did to the seller). They erased my help ticket like it never existed...I haven't heard back from them...I'm done with SJCAM...which is sad because I like the SJ7 STAR for cockpit audio when I fly. The only problem I've had with the two SJ7 STAR cameras is that the micro usb port has broken off in both cameras (I superglued a micro usb to usb cable on the second one before it totally broke off so I could keep using it in the plane while charging it at the same time with a USB power supply). The first SJ7 would not record sound after the micro usb port broke (while using the plug in official SJCAM microphone. The GoPro Hero 7 surpasses everything...that's all I'm saying..the only problem is that it's never going to be as cheap as SJCAM. I did all of my video reviewing with the SJ7 and SJ8 but they will be retired soon with GoPro cameras. The hypersmooth technology is what sold me and it is great. I do not have room in the plane to have a gyro. UPDATE: The second help desk ticket was taken down without answer as well...DO NOT BUY SJCAM....or should we leave the J silent and call it SCAM?

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey I'm really sorry to hear about that experience. I really wish I could find out why your tickets were erased because that doesn't seem right (and is much closer to my own experience with GoPro than with SJCAM) ...but that's just not right either way. The GoPro is definitely a beast of a camera, they've got it down when it comes to action cams and I am happy to see they're getting a little more affordable, especially with DJI in the game now the competition is getting a little more serious. I'm pretty excited about SJCAM's new SJ9, but I don't blame you for jumping ship after your experience. Hope that's just a fluke and not something that represents how most people's experiences are.

My videos regardless of the definition, reading and sound correct reading from the camera, however after transfer of files on my computer, the sound is always good reading but the video is horrible, jerky or even stopped then that the video is good for reading. What's the problem ? Which video player software to use? I use VLC.

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi! My first guess for that would be that the computer just can't handle the video file enough to play it smoothly. What computer are you viewing the files on? Also what is the frame rate? Have you tried another media player or dropping the files into an NLE like Final Cut?

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    It would depend more on your computer's processing power, not the operating system. If the video plays ok from the SD card, but not from the computer that means the problem is likely on the computer side. I'd recommend trying some other media players besides VLC, and possibly try to bring it into a program like Final Cut or Premiere to see how it plays there. Either that, or send the video file to your phone, and see how it plays back from there.

    Scott Dumas make sure you get a genuine card though, a lot of fakes out there. Hi! When you say the video doesn't work good, do you mean it's choppy/not smooth? It's possible that your phone or laptop can't handle 4k video well and it's not a problem of the camera. If it records and plays back on the camera's screen with no problems, that would be my best guess.

    Does it play back on the screen of the SJ8 without any problems? That would be the best way to see if it's the footage's problem or if it's the computer's. I'm not sure what laptop you're using but it's possible that higher frame rates even in 1080 or 720 could have problems playing back. Another things you could check is making sure you copy the files to your computer and play off the computer not directly off the card (you may already be doing this anyway). Also, VLC Player can sometimes work better with certain video formats, so I'd recommend trying to use that to watch the videos as well. Let me know if any of that helps.

    That's a very tricky question haha... the hero 6 is a solid solid camera (as is the sj8 pro) ...to be honest, I think the new sj9 will kill the hero 6 black for about the same price though. Waterproof without a case, super smooth stabilization, live streaming, 4k 60fps and more... most importantly for me it has a screw thread in the body, which makes it much easier to use without a case, maximizing the waterproof design. I should be reviewing it soon but I have high expectations for sure.

For the price though, those budget ones are hard to beat for sure. Less stress if something happens to it too haha.

    OMG, I just want an action cam that does good video quality in low light 😒 I've had 3 SJ4000's for like 5 years now but one of them gave out on me a few weeks ago so I need to replace it. My lighting setup/scenario: * Black background all around my walls. * I use 2 Neewer 176 LED lights on myself and my drums with no living room lights on and the Neewers at around 10-20% brightness ^So it's basically pitch black aside from the LED lights. Things I don't care about: 1. Audio quality (I get that edited) 2. Stabilization - they'll be on boom mics with OnStage 1/4-20 tripod adapters. 3. 4k - though it'd be cool to shoot in that and slow down for super slo-mo, but I think I can do that with 1080, 60fps Things I care about: 1. Shoots great video quality in a low to no light studio. My options: 1. GoPro Hero 5 Black - not performing well in my studio so far.. 2. Yi Lite - haven't gotten yet 3. Yi-4k - haven't gotten yet 4. SJ7 Star - haven't ordered. I've been told action cams don't do well in low light and the cheapest option is to get more light in the video. I just got a GoPro hero 5 black to replace the SJ4000, but the video quality actually sucks in my lighting situation compared to the Sj4000 - it's really grainy and doesn't look good at all. GoPro 5 black is 2.8 Aperture I think I'm also gonna try out the Yi Lite & Yi4k - Idk what they're aperture is but I think it's the same. Though I really like how my old SJ4000 does in this low light setting, so I'm considering the SJ7 Star.. It would be cheaper to just return it and get 2 more Neewer lights and put them on all 4 corners of my drum rug instead of 1 in front and 1 in back.. Do you have any tips for getting a good video quality in my low to no light setting? Any advice on what I should get for my studio setup? Thanks in advance!

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey, So like a lot of people have said I suspect that a lot of action cameras don't do amazing in low light because of the smaller sensor size. Wider apertures and better tech can definitely help but it depends what your expectations are. My best bet (and what I'd do myself) would be to consider more lights, and also to consider just using something like Neat Video to clean up the noise in post if you're open to the slightly longer workflow. I haven't had any experience with the SJ4000 or SJ7 Star so I can't say how they would be compared to each other or compared to what you are hoping for, but that would be my course of action (more lights and/or Neat Video in post) 4K can also be good for that since downsampling it to 1080 can help clean up the noise a little as well. Something to perhaps consider.

    Well after watching this video, and another 20 like it, I went out and bought me the SJ8 Pro kit. Boy was that a mistake! The camera that I received has a defective speaker straight from the factory and SJCAM support has basically told me touch luck, and are doing nothing to remedy the issue. I've done everything to correct the problem I can think of - checking all the right buttons in the menus, new quality sd-micro mem card, and using the camera without the waterproof case, and although the volume level is turned up to 10, the maximum, I can barely hear any sound with my ear pressed up against the camera's speaker. The videos that I produced with the camera play just fine on my computer, with solid sound, so I know the units microphones are working. But play the same video on the camera and silence. So there you have it...1.) SJCAM has an issue with quality control from their factory and, 2.) SJCAM does not care if the camera works or not once it is sold. Buyer beware!

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Sorry to hear about your experience. Although, to be honest- I don't remember the speaker on the unit itself being very loud at all so I'm not sure that it's defective on yours. If that's the case, that's why their support can't do anything for you. The footage on an action camera is meant to be played back on other devices mainly, and the speaker in the unit is probably the least important and lowest quality part of any action camera, not only this one. They have to cut corners somewhere to keep their costs lower than others, and the speaker is a perfectly acceptable place to do that in my opinion. As long as the microphones work fine, that's the main concern. I'm not sure if yours is in face defective or not, but if that's the only complaint, I think it's hard to say it makes the entire purchase a mistake. In any case, sorry to hear you were disappointed.

    @@ScottDumas Then why even bother putting in a speaker and punching holes in the top of the case for the sound to emanate from? You can do it on a cell phone, so real estate should be no real problem, nor should power. Listen very carefully, the sound coming out of the camera set at volume 10, maximum, would be about as loud as an infant salamander fart. It doesn't take a large speaker to have sound that is easily heard with the camera at arm's length - look to how tiny the speakers are in ear buds, enlarge it to the size of a dime and the audio track should be heard by the user. I have very good hearing and I can only hear the voice track with my ear actually resting on the speaker grill and even then the sound is very faint. Again, why bother designing one in if this is the result? And why won't they honor what is an industry standard guarantee of merchantability? A little change in name and motto is due here... @@watersprite7983 I'm not saying it's not possible, just that they had to cut corners somewhere in order to keep their prices lower than others, and maybe that's where they cut their corner. I didn't make the camera so I don't know (and I don't have it with me right now, my friend has been using it, so I can't check my own) ...either way, I don't know everything that's going on here, but I just feel like it's an overreaction. Not even saying their customer support was good or bad to you, I don't know, but I know that as a company they're actually pretty solid even in terms of customer support generally speaking compared to so many other brands on the market. Even GoPro. So, again, I don't know all the details but the only thing you said had a problem is a "quiet speaker" and the reaction of saying it's a huge mistake to buy the whole camera overall and broadcast that trying to make other people change their minds on this... just seems dramatic.

    P.s. everyone knows to buy a phone gimbal over an action camera one! You can buy adaptors for phone gimbal that fits your action camera! And fit your phone on it also. And the waterproof case won't be a problem. Action camera gimbals are for the super rich and the stupid. Especially when some phone gimbals come with action camera adaptor plates for free.

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well, I do agree to a certain degree but disagree in some ways too. Even though the adapter plates might fit the waterproof case, I haven't really seen any waterproof smartphone gimbals so that doesn't really mater. The Feiyu Tech G6 and the EVO2 from Zhiyun are waterproof themselves which is why they're so nice for a waterproof action camera like the Hero 6. Also, at least in the case of the G6, the smaller overall size of the action camera gimbal means it's a bit more solid. The further the arms/weight reach out to the side, the more you'l have to fight the vibrations of walking and running. To counteract that you'd need a really good gimbal- the level of smoothness and solidness on the G6 was definitely better than most of the smartphone gimbals I've tried, even from Feiyu-Tech themselves. Also, while adapter plates are great, they're a solution to a problem. A problem that doesn't exist with an action camera dedicated gimbal. Although I've reviewed lots of smartphone gimbals, I personally don't use them in my private life all that much because I just don't really take the time to record properly with my phone. If I do record something worth stabilizing, it's usually with a normal camera (action camera included). I would, however, use one for an action camera, especially if it's waterproof. Because of that I'd definitely rather have something dedicated to action cameras (that in this case can even control or power a GoPro/SJ8) than a halfway solution with a smartphone gimbal even though it would technically be more versatile. That reply got way longer than intended haha, sorry! Hope it makes sense :)

    Scott Dumas fare comment. I do really like the look of the isteady pro mobile. Value for money it doesn't matter using it hard. Its about £70 ad will take your phone, action camera, be a charge bank. I think I want a gimbal Definatly. But not a specific action camera one. To many strings attached for my liking. Are some action camera gimbal waterproof as in underwater? I get it small and light is nice and steady. The director of oceans 11. His new movie shot 100% on phone using gimbal. He says it's the future. Samsung note 9 camera argue better than any action camera out at the moment? The potential for both kinds of shooting on a gimbal is Definatly a game changer though. No arguement there. Interesting to hear your perspective on it. Thanks

  • @ScottDumas

    @ScottDumas

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I think it's nice to have the versatility of using both for sure, I would love to see something a little more cross camera compatible. Actually, in that respect the Feiyu Tech G6 Plus is quite interesting- it can be used for anything from a gopro to a small mirrorless camera and as I understand it's able to control them all to some degree. It's also splash proof (not full waterproof) as is the G6. I believe the Evo 2 from Zhiyun is the same story. As for recording on smartphones, I think it's great for convenience and the quality is getting better and better as is the level of control, but it will be a long long time before they live up to a proper camera for a lot of reasons. Control over shutterspeed, larger sensors for better low light performance and even just cleaner images at any brightness, better performance against abberations (or more control over them with proper interchangeable lenses etc), advanced codecs that stand up to grading, quality sound recordings with robust high quality connections etc. There's a lot more of course but I think that there will just be 2 distinct types of video/movie. For me, the bottom line is that a professional camera is quick easy and convenient to control, has assist features that help in recording and everything you could need is there for you without sacrifices (in some cases). It is exciting to see how phone cameras and abilities progress in the future though. It will bring the ability to create beautiful stories more accessible to those who have ideas and imagination but not the budget. :)

    Scott Dumas I'm actually in the market for a small point and shoot. The Canon sx740 released today. Nikon n1000 will be out in 2 months ish. The size on the sensor is Definatly an issue in phones agreed. Loads of iso and noisy image. No settings for shutter speed and all of those other settings I watched a detailed video about over and over but still only just grasp it. If one goes up the other goes down. Of you over ride this you can get those clever blurred moving shots ect. Dslr with a mirror and a couple of different lenses for many reasons is way more versatile than a point and shoot. But you cant fit it in your pocket. Mirrorless is better for 4k video and with a good sensor size can let in good natural light. The rx100 6 is silly money! No external mic jack even! But the canon sx740 is just £350 a smaller sensor but 4k 30fps and 40× zoom. Very versatile in your pocket ect. The SJ8 PRO is for the obvious other choices of use. I have the pro accessories kit with mine. External mic. Car charger and mount self stick and water float. Head and body strap. Extra battery charger. Loads of stuff in the carry bag. Its amazing. I just want a gimbal now. I really was going to get the isteady mobile and a adaptor plate. My phone and a canon sx740. I'm complete. Ok a DSLR would be great to own but I'm not that heavy user.
