So you can use this camera with the quik app?? My father in law gave me his old 3+ and I'm just curious if i can use it still.

I have a gopro hero 3+ that i bought for scuba diving back in 2014 and i honestly still can't find a good reason to upgrade. The new models may be able to shoot at insane resolutions and frame rates, but who's got room to save a bunch of those gargantuan files!? The only reasons i can think of to upgrade are battery size and sensor size for lower light, but those reasons aren't enough yet. Maybe the Hero 20?

The new stabilisation, touch screen, more advanced protune settings and the option for more slow motion, waterproof without a case, better audio, easier mounting options are really nice features in my opinion. So its not just bigger resolutions. But of course if the camera still works fine and does everything you want it to do there is no need to upgrade. Also the low light is still pretty terrible on the newer models. And sometimes (according to others) it freezes which is extremely annoying.

@@ImportantTech I use mine exclusively for diving so most of those features are not needed. Just a nice, simple, light little camera I can mount on my mask and forget about until I'm back on the boat. Even the waterproof feature isn't really needed as it's only rated for 33 feet. Might be nice as a backup if the dive housing floods, I suppose.

A 256gb card is like $20... hard drives are cheap... new gopros have a proper UI, have a mount on the camera, better lens, superview, better glass, image stabilization, proper usb port, audio input.... i mean there is just about every reason to upgrade from the 3...

I'm confused, mine can do 1080p at 60fps and 1440p at 45fps if i remember correctly. Have you updated the camera to the newest software?

I picked up a gently used Go Pro Hero 3 along with some accessories and attachments, and it seems to be working well Not expecting much out of it but will make a great addition to my other HD/4K cameras..

1: you can't buy them new anymore, but you can search for GoPro LCD bacpac on used sites. 2. Phone app is called GoPro Quik

At around 0:20 you mention cheap action cameras you can buy brand new for around the same price point. I'd like to hear some recommendations are for one of those. I'd be using it mostly for when I take my car to the track (interior and exterior mounting preferably) but cold weather (-35ish Celsius) and some waterproofing could help in the winter. Extra points if they're easily available in Canada.

Most of the cheap action cameras I have tested are from brands like Denver and Rollei which aren't availible in Canada. But almost all of them are rebranded chinese action cams with their own logo put on it. But that doesn't mean that they are terrible cameras. However, -35 degrees celcius is very cold, and most of the cheap action cams also have cheap batteries that don't work great below 0 degrees celcius. So I think an older GoPro is a better option. But when you go on Amazon, there are cameras out there from for example Akaso or Apexcam. I never used them myself, but you can probably find some KZread reviews of them, with sample clips. Keep in mind that most of them don't have the highest quality accessoires included, the microphone is almost always terrible, and there is no SD card included.

@@ImportantTech Yeah, weather might be a no go since it’s not even guaranteed I’ll end up using it in that weather. Found a pretty cheap Akaso Brave 4 on marketplace and thinking about pulling the trigger on that one mainly for the 1080p@60fps recording. Thoughts?

Update on the Akaso: it’s good, especially for the price I got it for (50$ CAD with all accessories) but its low light performance is abysmal. I haven’t tried the actual low light mode yet, or manual settings, only automatic. If the results change I’ll be sure to add another update.

@@a70turbo Sorry that I didn't see your last comment! I think I didn't get a notification. Sadly with most action cams the low light is terrible. Even with GoPro. That's because they have very small sensors.

The best reason to upgrade to a newer model is the stabilization factor on models from 5 up. I have the 3+ black model. It takes good movies if stabilized. You can purchase an lcd screen for the rear for about 20.00 bucks. There are a lot around. Make sure you have a mini hdmi cable if you want to update or change a locked password that you don’t own. Many new and used batteries out there too. I was surprised at the good quality you can get out of this camera, having owned later models.😊😊😊

If you need a reliable action camera that has decent image quality then it can be a good option for the price! Just keep in mind that there is no stabilization, and in the case the microphone is not the best.
