I'm pretty sure that HTC is dumping the vive due to the summer sale from oculus, probably makes the margin's to small for them to care about it. As to price, most modern machines with a 1060 or more should be able to run VR. I don't think it's a fad. edit: my 3570k could run my oculus with no problems on a r9 fury nittro.

Are you sure about your units? 752KBps would be pretty close to 7Mbps, you sure that's not what you are seeing? I would assume it's illegal for ISP to not provide you with remotely close capacities. Is it a shared connection in anyway?

D Jaquith And 1 km is so much shorter to 1,000,000,000,000 nm Attention to detail please. One is B the other is b B = 8b, B is byte, which is 8 bits (b) ergo, 752000 Bps is 6016000 bps. Which while not quite "there", is close. Internet company LOVES to advertise the bps rate, because it's larger. Whereas many things on your computer monitors speed as Bps, as that's actually useful. Most data are transmitted in B and not in b. It's a very common mistake, I have panicked myself wondering where my data have gone (thou in my case, there is a mismatch of units between my windows monitor and my browser monitor. On that note, I'm sure one of them had the wrong unit displayed, displaying Bps as bps. I thought I had a virus sucking up data! But alas, I eventually noticed that it's just a unit problem)

Saying vr is dying out, i find that strange. It is just getting started. Steam vr is going well, warehouse scale vr arcades are popping up, vr job training is developing, and also there are treatments for ptsd and anxiety that use vr for exposure therapy. To me it sounds like that article saying pc's are dying; uninformed and wrong.

My PC was bought at the price and benchmark point that accompanied the Oculus DK2 I preordered. Sold it off a few years ago and haven't purchased any since due to the combination of price and game availability. I'd buy another one if they promised less nausea and higher content quality at $400 or less in Canada.

I was listening to a tech podcast and they explained when a company doesn't have enough resources available to work on future products, they sell off the most valuable part of the company or the company as a whole. It's not that HTC wants out of VR, but rather aren't able to proceed with what they want to do. The Daily Tech News Show explained it better than I can. I'm not worried about VR dieing.

I've got an S6 and GearVR, and I thought it was absolutely incredible. I was seriously mindblown with how real it felt. Now, I can just imagine what it would be like with full room scaling, tracking your entire body and movement, using the (hand) controllers to interact with your surroundings, etc. it must be phenomenal in comparison. My PC can play it, but an HTC Vive is literally more then the 1,000$ I spent building my PC here in Canada. Now if it was 449 or something reasonable, I'd pick it up asap. And no, I'm not gonna get into the horribly disgusting Oculus ecosystem.

I would buy VR if it was cheaper. But also, the more competition that comes about, the more it will probably die out, because developers won't know which platform to develop for, and also, us as consumers won't know which will be the best to buy. (It just starts a loop)

  • @jort93z

There are a lot of cheap vr headsets out there already. there are a couple of good options between 250$ and 400$. just none of the prominent brands we know. mostly chinese oculus clones at that point though. but theres also unique ones with features like 4k around that price. i would buy into vr if there'd be a reasonable amount of full games for it(a lot of the stuff are really just demo's and showcases). theres just not a lot of great AAA games for vr yet. some games are pretty good but theres just not a lot of content. of course there'd be more conent if vr was cheaper and more people could afford it. so indirectly i am confident that a cheap mainstream vr option would definitly help for more developers focusing on vr.

the issue with VR is not the price, is the fact that we need at least double the GPU power of 1080 TI to run it. All marketing aside, you will see that the most powerful GPU today will get between 40-60 FPS in 1080p in any open world game. To bring that to 90 fps for VR you need to run DCS for example at low to medium settings. Now I don't know about you, but I bet most of us will not agree to spend 3000 Euros to play 30E tech demos, or to see see low detail graphics. It will be fun in about 3-4 years.

Basily working as a 3D monitor replacement. All the hand gadget bull crap and the point & click movements kills any interest I have in the technology.
