Goodbye R-Pod... Hello FreeSolo!

We recovered from last week's unexpected part failure and finally got the R-Pod over to the dealership for the warranty claim. While we were there we decided to walk the lot to see how big of a camper we may go to next. We ended up buying a smaller camper instead! We ended up with a 2022 FreeSolo DIN made by Braxton Creek. In the video we show the new camper and explain our thought process for the swap. Hope you enjoy and don't forget to like and subscribe.

    Late comment. Nice little trailer. My first mod would be to reverse the swing of the fridge door. It should open with easy access from the "kitchen" area and table.

    Yeah that fridge door definitely needed changed. But as much as we loved the little Freesolo, once we went full time we had to upgrade.

    Thanks. Unfortunately our shake down trip got canceled because Shanna ended up getting Covid. Our next trip is planned for the end of June so we'll have an actual camping review then. We do go just hang out in there in the evenings here and there. It's really comfortable for as small as it is.

    Throughout the whole video I was saying that the refrigerator was already a 12v. LOL... Glad you figured that one out. I'm currently looking at a smaller FreeSolo too. Looking to see how well you like it after the summer months are done and you've had it for a while. Thanks for sharing, Pat

    Yeah.... total brain fart on that one. So much going on that didn't even stop to think about it. The salesman made a comment about it being a 110v fridge at one point and I didn't second guess it. We mad it through this entire last summer and still have no regrets. This winter I am upgrading the AC and adding better insulation in the walls though. It did fine until heat indexes broke 100. But at that point it's hard for any camper to keep up.

    This is basically the same as the Little Guy Max, except a tad smaller!!!! The Little Guy has a heck-a lot more windows, so doesnt feel as cramped.

    Yes we did do better financially. Since the market was so crazy at the time we got way more trade in than I expected. So we ended up with a lighter, smaller, more nimble, and cheaper trailer. Since I haven't been able to get a better tow vehicle yet, that all became pretty important and we are loving the Freesolo. I've said in other videos, the dealership acknowledged the damaged wall panels were due to errors in factory assembly. If Forest River would have just sent new wall panels we probably would still have the R-pod.

    I've got the braxton creek 15fk and I almost got this. The only thing that stopped me was that the table area doesn't have windows around it for some reason. Yours does have slightly more storage space I believe. I hope you get years of joy out of it.

    We actually discussed that when we were deciding. I window on the slop over the table would have made it so much brighter and seem bigger. But we still love it so far.

    I’m looking at the free solo romo. It seems a better floor plan as I’d mike much more space inside so I won’t feel like I’m in a jail cell.

    Do you have weight distribution bars on the bushwhacker? If so what is the ballpark cost.

  • @JustSimplifying

    We just used the same one we had for the r-pod. I think it’s an E3 if I am remembering correctly. The Tahoe barely squats without the bars. So we are mostly concerned with sway control.

    We leave this next week for another trip so that video should be up in a few weeks. We love the camper so far. For the size and price the FreeSolo is a great little camper. A full bath would be nice but we mostly stay at State Parks so we can use the campground showers too to minimize the inconvenience. Good luck with your camper search!

    Go for the Little Guy Mini Max or MAX or the Tab 400 lots of Windows. Mini has a Big fridge.

  • @JustSimplifying

    @JustSimplifying

    Yes, both those have lots of windows. But they are both also $15,000-$25,000 more expensive then this one. If we had double the money we would go with a Tab 400. Our R-pod had leaking issues and I've seen several reviews with the Little Guy Max where they have had severe leaking issues. If you want to donate the price difference for a Tab 400 we'd gladly let you!!

    We really like it. There are nicer similar trailers but they also cost two to three times as much as this did. For the money we are really pleased. I just know I’ll have to customize some stuff over time and tailor things to us. We will have another camping video out this Saturday too.

    We get that comment a lot. Honestly it isn't that bad. We mostly are outside when camping. So the only extended time is at night to sleep. And with the windows it does have, the screen door, and the exhaust fan, it gets a real good breeze and has plenty light for us.

    I'm not a early riser so I'm fine with not as many windows. Don't want to be up when the sun comes up:) Question I have is how does it cool on a hot day? Towing, sway bar or no? Thanks!

  • @JustSimplifying

    We have a weight distribution/sway control system from the first camper so we use it with the new one as well. Our old Tahoe tows it just fine with our setup. It depends on your tow vehicle on if you would really need a sway bar.

    We are currently repainting the interior to brighten it up a little bit. But we've had it 8 months and several camping trips so far and we have no regrets at all. We love the little thing. We are mostly outside at the campgrounds anyway. And with the screen door open, the two bedside windows, and the fan open over head it's not bad at all in there.

    Hi Travis. Our Shakedown trip is this weekend actually. We had another trip planned but had a little Covid outbreak in the house. Next week we will have a video on prepping it and a few minor things we found that we had to take care of. The week after will be our camping trip. I will say for having an older Tahoe, the Freesolo was noticeably easier to tow than the R-pod.

    I can't wrap my head around why you would buy a trailer with NO WINDOWS? It's like a cave in the dinette? I'm clostraphobic just watching it? Please explain your thinking? I liked the r pod better. Am I wrong? Or are you guys just too wild with indoor sports?

  • @JustSimplifying

    @JustSimplifying

    Жыл бұрын

    Ha. We can easily explain. First off, there are windows. There is a small window on each side of the bed and the screen door. We normally have all three open and the max fan. The combination gives enough light and plenty of air movement (when we looked we said the dinette window would be nice, but we really are fine without it too). Second, more windows are great if the manufacturer has good build practices. Our R-pod had window and slide leaks from the day it rolled out of the factory. Third, at campgrounds we are usually outside. Fourth, we have had a home invasion in the middle of the night before. So not we are a little over analytical of points of entry and defense. And last but not least, you hit the nail on the head with the indoor sports!

  • @JustSimplifying

    @Jeff & Shanna Just Simplifying I appreciate that will help, but spend a few bucks putting in at least one more window on either side of the dinette. I didn't see a ceiling fan in the unit, or a kitchen exhaust fan either. You'll need both light and better ventilation.
