Great to see active crossover speakers on your bench ! Seems quite budget lineup . As proud owner of Genelec monitors I can confirm tell they are best value for me . Even smaller ones I use at desk so good.

Thank you for pointing out that monitors serve as tools. It's important for producers to understand that if their speakers feature a 10dB bass boost, it will result in the mix having a bass level that is actually 10dB lower in the final production due to the speaker's characteristics.

I would only say that it's better to EQ or crossover to reduce a bump in a frequency response because it doesn't increase distortion as much as when you increase a null to be flat. It's generally true because the speaker's natural response curve causes it to reproduce most efficiently where it has it's natural high efficiency thus they are likely to produce less distortion at their peaks than if you force a speaker to overwork in an unnaturally overdriven portion of their response to raise it to flat..

I had seen some bad things on other presonus models but I will have to keep an eye on them because that 8 XT does look really nice. I wonder how their new ugly looking co-axial ones perform. Can't say Behringer surprised me, low price seems to be their priority above all else. What's funny is there's some monitors out there which are intentionally pushed up in the midrange, as mixing with that is supposed to give a better idea of translation to smaller consumer speakers like in TVs, Phones, Bluetooth speakers etc. But it would make more sense to use EQ to me, in this day and age. Made more sense in the analogue days with the NS10s. Nearfield monitors were a solution for me to get a great audio experience, without as much as the cost and impracticalities of a traditional hi-fi system (especially in an apartment). Being closer means the room reflections are generally less noticeable, the speakers don't have to be as powerful since you're so close, and being plugged into a PC, I can use a free EQ software instead of having to buy a miniDSP or such to make corrections or add a downward tilt to the response. I've never enjoyed headphones much so it's opened up a whole new enjoyment of music for me, previous experience with speakers only being bluetooth or with very badly setup hi-fi systems in untreated rooms from various family member's houses. Of course the downside is the sweet spot is tiny, so not good for relaxed listening or with other people!

Gene commenting about the Yamaha NS10 is classic. Those monitors were not very accurate, but (somehow) they were in so many studios. You learned how to mix on them just because when you went to a different studio that had them, you could turn out a proper mix. Btw, the Behringer monitors have to be even worse. This was an interesting video on budget monitors. Great video, as always.

Hearing before you buy is impossible in my area. Even if you can audition a speaker system.... (I would have to drive 100+ miles) the dealers do not have an true A - B setup with volumn matching or even driven the same electronics. So... the home recording guy is going to have to buy blind and hope for the best. I havecthe Kali model which sound pretty neutral to me and a bit more expensive Presonus which is also pretty neutral in my treated room. Very interesting review! Thanks so much!

CerwinVega! Has a new powered studio monitor out called the Vega series. One of them is a 10” woofer 3 way they look pretty good!

Gene, have you considered the new yamaha hs3 and hs4 studio monitors? I have the yamaha hs50m studio monitors as my 2 channel home stereo system. I have the topping d10s dac connected to my samsung one connect box since it has an orange led display that shows the sample rate, bitrate and format such as pcm and dsd. I have the schitt hel 2 dac amp connected to my yamaha studio monitors with a 6.3 mm jack to the 3.5 mm output of my schitt dac amp and the toslink from the schitt hel 2 connected to my samsung one connect box toslink that I use for gaming while being connected to my sennheiser hd 600 the original marble version. My studio monitors knobs are all set to flat on rockville studio monitors that I bought from value village since they were cheaper than amazon for the same models and they are set up in an equilateral triangle to ears. Value village and goodwill still have vintage audio gear that I still prefer to most modern stuff and I even find technics turn tables. I have yet to find any yamaha ns10 studio monitors or jbl L100 classic loud speakers with the original orange speaker grills. My sister is not even into audio and she even knows that bose sounds bass too heavy and she told me that the vocals sound too distant and that the bass is overpowering the vocals and I noticed it too when watching a movie since the bass overtook too much of the vocals.

Is why we bought the JBL L100 back in the day. To hear what the studios that were using them were hearing. Probably half a reason why they still have their die hard fans who still mostly listen to that same music. We even listened mostly near field in much the same way. We all basically had listening studios in our living rooms, many of which were in that Golden Ratio room size category as well so it wasn't a bad way to live.

No one serious use behringers, they're the cheaper end. Or monoprice at least that I know of. Even presonus aren't although they have a "pro" line now I believe. Most entry folk use KRK, Yamaha and slowly Kali is getting more popular. Then you have the higher up jump to Focal, Adams, barefoot and Genelec. I personally love my in-8v2

Thanks for doing this guys, way cool 😎 IMHO It would be extremely cool if you one day would be able to review any of the real pro monitors, like any of the Dynaudio pro monitors 😇 But that Behringer, measurements actually looks like the Himalayas, not good for a loudspeaker supposed to be accurate 😬😲

With content being mixed on neutral speakers, I've always wondered why many hifi speakers aren't in order to play it.

I'd love to see the results for a KEF Q-150 because the tweeter is in the center of the woofer.

Audio Science Review and Erin's audio have reviewed those KEF's, they're pretty good for the price. The only issue is you really have to high pass at 80-100 hz, but for a speaker that size it's expected.

those aren’t studio monitors tho. there are concentric design studio monitors though like kali in5/8

@@billsmith5166 KEF Q-150 ? those are like hifi home speakers but i cant argue that they would work or not. they might be great and i take it back upon second thought. i use some mediocre elac spkrs for a second listening experience in another room for mixing. the kefs seem cool.... hard for me to get past that woofer looking like tires /rims lol tho personally.

You don't really have a bad speaker in a studio and if the speakers "out" you EQ it to be flat the same with headphones it's not going to affect your recording. you should have reviewed the tannoy gold 8 inch that's a good speaker probably better than the examples you're showing. You expect those speakers to be a bit more flat on axs you don't need to worry about off axis. Actually it be better bad off access particularly in the bass so you don't suffer from reflections

Bad off-axis bass is not possible (with classic way design). It's Omni directional. Also directivity should be as linear as it could, maybe it is not as important as it would be with hifi, but still is.

Sounds like the DACs don't work in the Behringers ...can they get a firmware update if manf. decided to?

Behringers' analog guitar pedals aren't any better

I love powered studio monitors for nearfield desktop listening experience. I’ve owned 5-6 of them and have had a great journey. Event 20/20 v3 BAS, Yamaha hS8, Adam T7V, Adam a7v, and focal solo6. I’ve demod Kali, Klipsch the 7’s and genelecs as well. I don’t use them for monitoring so I prefer deviation from flat and a bit of flavor to the sound.

uhhhhh what? ppl in music industry we all know this stuff. these are all example of the notgood. these are all low end cheapo studio monitors. nobody bothers w these even in home studio bedrooms. waist of server space / server’s AC energy to upload this / watch this i feel like. please try again w some contrast to covering good, nice monitors, against the notgood. behringer is garbage. kali is good but those are not their strongest there are all outdated now 🙄
