Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy | Mike Love | Talks at Google

Mike Love discusses memorable stories from his legendary, raucous, and triumphant 55 years as the front man of The Beach Boys. Love shares how became the front man and principal lyricist for America's most successful rock band, his unsettling encounters with Charles Manson's "family", and how his studies with Maharishi forever changed his life. This talk also provides a unique behind-the-scenes look at the early days of Rock and Roll, and the changing cultural mores over the past half century.
Mike Love’s double album "Unleash The Love" is available now for pre-order. It includes 13 original songs + 12 re-recordings of The Beach Boys classics. 4 singles are available for instant download and streaming, including the title track and brand new collaboration “Darlin’” featuring AJR. I'm not the biggest Mike fan, but its not like he said he hated the music. He was just concerned that it was too far removed from what they had been known for, which is not an unreasonable concern to have. And sales wise, he ended up being right. The album did not do as well as their recent releases at the time.

First thing this guy does is grab the mike beforehand point up at the paying customers sitting alone and proclaim us as losers who had no friends.Than further proceed to insult the rest of the crowd as suckers because they were going to blow out of there in 20 minutes. At that point Carl had enough and pushed him aside and preceded to sound incredible as he gave everyone their moneys worth. Carl… the ultimate professional.

SAME!! Dude I JUST realized that I literally ran into him at POPEYES in Granada Hills or somewhere nearby (can’t remember) like 3 weeks ago and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Really happy and peaceful dude, knew how to make conversation without saying too much or too little. Until seeing this video now I straight up thought he was a nice old guy tryna make conversation and crack jokes but I KNEW something was different about him…I was standing last in line and he walked in a few minutes later behind me and we somehow made conversation, and something about him told me he was different…like the only way I can describe it is that we both looked at each other and spoke to each other like we knew we were special…or chosen…there was a certain inner confidence we both sensed in each other…idk but I was SOOOO close to asking who he was or what he did/etc since he was so open and friendly enough to make it an ok question…but I was so hungry and eager to make it home that I didn’t dive into a conversation with him as much as I KNEW I should’ve so I told him well wishes and left…mind you I’m 25 yrs old and knew nothing about what the Beach Boys look like but I just knew there was something special about this guy…now after super randomly watching a John Stamos interview as soon as Mike’s face showed up and I heard his voice I knew it was him. Wow. Lol

Just saw Mike Love and the Beach Boys last week in Calgary, Alberta. He did not disappoint. Two hours of fantastic music. The biggest surprise of the show musically, was Mike's Pisces Brothers, which he does reference in this interview. Amazing song. The other major surprise was the age diversity of the audience. The crowd went all the way from teenage couples on a date, to very old men and women using walkers. It was just mind-blowing. We also saw a lot of dads with their sons or daughters, clearly there to share and pass down the love of this music. It was my first Beach Boys concert, and it was spectacular. I will never forget it. And to finish off here, my fanboy moment, even though I'm 64 years old, was when my wife and I were just coming out of the elevator at the hotel/casino/music venue where we were staying to see the Beach Boys concert. And as we were coming out of the elevator, Mike Love was just going in to the elevator. The elevator doors closed, and my eyes were popping out of my head as I looked at my wife. Her eyes were almost as wide. "That was Mike Love!" I whispered to her. I'll never forget it. To come within a couple feet of someone who has been part of music history for over 60 years is a moment I'll never forget, and I'm sure over the years I will embellish it to the point where 20 years from now I'll be saying that Mike and I had dinner and drinks and talked Beach Boys music til 2 am. Thank God for the Beach Boys.

Brian built this guy up by giving him some leads and Input in the early days, a decision I am sure he regretted later on. How is Mike Love wanting credit and royalties for songs he co-wrote any different than Levon Helm wanting the same from Robbie Robertson? Helm was given a lot of respect for speaking up(as he should have), Mike is vilified. How is Mike any different than Mick Taylor who has fought for writing credits for songs he wrote when he was in the Stones that Jagger and Richards took full credit for. Mike has apologized repeatedly fucking up at the Beach Boys induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. How much contrition does the guy need to show before people let it go? John Lennon(I love his music) is one of the biggest jerks in rock music history(ask Julian)... he is worshiped as saint. Sure Mike has said and done some things that I have not liked and I am a Wilson Brothers fan first and foremost but without think of how many songs we would never have heard. He wrote the lyrics to Pacific Ocean Blue, the song from the album of the same name of the Dennis Wilson masterpiece for fuck sake. I don't like how he tours using the name The Beach Boys...that band he has is Love/Johnston and friends and should be called that. I don't like how he seemed to steer a vibrant and progressive, creative early 70's Beach Boys into a touring oldies band but he isn't the demon he has been made out to be. I don't like his inability to acknowledge Dennis as a great musician and song writer. A dick at times(who isn't),sure....evil, no.

See, John admitted to being a fucking piss ant and tried to better himself. Mike Love continues to say “for those who believe Brian Wilson walks on water I will continue to be the anti-Christ.” He’s just got an ego. Nobody really cares about him wanting credit for writing their early songs, the issue is he seems to also want credit for things he tried actively to destroy. I think a lot of Beach Boys die hards are upset that Mike Love didn’t let Brian go solo in ‘66. Brian wanted to make music he felt, Mike wanted to keep making hit surf records, but rather than part ways and keep both happy, Mike kinda guilted Brian into continuing the Beach Boys thing because he knew they’d be nothing without Brian. You add the that the fact that he clearly doesn’t want to give up the spotlight and constantly name-drops, he just isn’t really a likeable guy. But that being said I don’t think anybody takes issue with him trying to get credit for I Get Around, Fun, Fun, Fun and so on, he had a hand in them and deserves credit. (Beyond that he should take his royalties and stfu though)

Mike has definitely done a few thing to hurt his public persona, and I have have been critical of him after watching some interviews/stories, but you make some good points. He probably doesn’t deserve all the flack he gets. You are right, there are a lot of pricks in the industry, but it’s not evident publicly. Mike Love has the dubious honor of being the only Beach Boy who manipulated Brian Wilson over songwriting credits. He knows full well it's what he did. He was the least talented Beach Boy musically and he knows this as well. But rather than accept having been so fortunate to have been in the same orbit as Brian, he chose to manipulate. He wanted more money, but couldn't write a hit song on his own to save his life. Shame on him.

We all love Brian Wilson but he's a shy fellow and a lot clumsier communicating with the audience. He needs Mike to get his message across. And look at what she just said, "150 SHOWS/YEAR"!!! That's a killer schedule even for a forty year old man. Okay he's not exactly a voice like Sinatra's however he actually bears a similarity with old Blue Eyes in as much as they both had voices that "talk". "If everybody hadan ocean". Just try to annunciate such a sentence like Mike does. It's not a great voice but it's a highly distinctive one and communicates. That and his long history of making records is buried deep into our minds and thoughts. As such he's absolutely irreplaceable.
