Good Game Design - Super Mario Maker 2: Building Better Creators

Ойындар

Mario Maker 2 has been incredibly addicting since its release. I've been hooked on creating my own stages and learning new ways to utilize the plethora of tools at our disposal. Let's talk about how this sequel upped the ante in terms of teaching and encouraged better game design in its creators.

I think the best thing about the game is just how much they push fairness when creating courses. In so many of the tutorial lessons in the dojo, they repeatedly bash you over the head with making stages that are fair first, difficult later. Feels like they recognised how much people get sick of seeing insane troll levels and, without just outright not allowing them to be made, communicated the idea of making levels fairly and how that can still be fun for people to play and make.

troll levels are still a popular level type tho, it’s just to prevent hot garbage levels like those that start you off with a giant thwomp on your head

Ya people find out new contraptions that they share with rest of the maker community so that is forever expanding and improving. I found out you can use on offs with conveyors stacked with a wall cannon on the side of it to move it up and down which I used to create the arcade game centipede in Super Mario maker 2.

Another reason that the levels are WAY better because unlike SMM1 where levels IMMEDIATELY get thrown into the level pool upon upload, SMM2 levels enter a New Courses section where they can have a chance to enter the level pool by getting a like and being played. New Courses courses don't appear in the Endless Challenge.

The only problems I have with Mario Maker 2 is that some of the clear condition in Story Mode are not available in the course maker and the multiplayer is still laggy. I know Nintendo said they were going to add Friends Online but the game has been out for a month and we still don't have it yet. Regardless I enjoy this game. My favorite part is playing different levels because I see what people create and it gives me a reason to keep coming back and playing different levels. Its way better than it was in Mario Maker 1.

The boo feature is a good idea and all but it can also really screw over perfectly talented course makers. All it takes is for the first few people playing your levels to be complete Neanderthals that exit your stage as soon as they fail even once and give your stage a Boo and nobody's going to play your stage after that. Not unless you go around shoving your course ID in everyone's faces and even that's not a guarantee. I don't know how I can make my courses any easier without being patronizing and yet most people can't complete any of the courses I publish.

I'm pretty including the heavy stones and Toad collection levels in story mode was a deliberate choice to act as a teaser for new features yet to come - or features that just weren't ready in time for release; those two stuck me as having the potential to be particularly bug-prone if thrown haphazardly into a level, and they seem to be making a definite point of preventing bugs and exploits this time around.

The best part, for me, is the themes! Oh how wonderfully thematic some of them feel. Gone are the days of "eh guess I'll add this" where every item was used. Now we have actual levels, with core design elements. Rubber Ross is an amazing example of this, with his levels he only has around 2-4 unique objects, ignoring blocks. "This level has icecycles, twisters and on/off" made for a far better level than the MM1 "the only theme is bad design"

Creating is the game's strongest aspect for me. In my opinion, every game should have a creation tool like Mario Maker's. If a puzzle heavy series like Zelda or a more action based game like Sonic had a level making tool, the results would be amazing.

I can respect many of the changes made to remove glitches or particular types of inputs (no midairs) that had legitimate uses but automatically barred a lot of people from trying. But I wish they had applied that kind of thought throughout, so that it was still possible to download courses to understand how they work, and to add the ability to watch ghosts of the upload clear and world record, to demystify the deliberately opaque. Having written those out, I can see how Nintendo's recommendation algorithm changes should be filtering out the levels where those features would be most useful, but even in that case, not being able to change or even just remove a vote feels bad.

Particularly my Oni Shell levels where a giant shell chases you destroying the ground behind you, same thing I was famous for in SMM1, and I've gotten nearly 40,000 players on just two levels combined in the last month. I think the only things that kinda bother me in Mario Maker 2 is the lack of visual stuff you could add (sometimes) and that the game presets certain stuff for you (examples: low gravity, upside-down levels, etc.) and I wish people would be able to toggle that on or off. An option to set your own amount of lives for Endless Challenges would also be useful (it'd cap at 50 or 100) Apart from that SMM2 is miles better than the prequel

I really really like mm2 but I also get really frustrated with some additions Like, so many of the additions are interactive and versatile, but the angry sun/moon is so, the opposite of that. It does one thing and that's it, and you can only have one per subworld! Plus, you can't put a sun in nighttime or a moon in daytime. On that point, the way mechanics are forcibly tied to day/night is really bad if I'm honest. Like, it's cute when you see it the first time, but eventually you just start to get frustrated. "I'd like to make this ground level at night" - you can do it but now you're not allowed to place 1-up mushrooms, goombas float in the air, and thwomps chase you "I want to make a sandstorm" - ok but only at night, you fool, you absolute moron "This stage uses the castle aesthetic but I want it to be night-time" - swim time! Did you not want swim time? Too bad, swim time! "can I place the poison mushroom?" - Are you in the ground night-time theme? - "no" - Then how dare you "Ok so I like the look of night-time but I want the music to stay the same" - *knowing smirk* It's just a really bad implementation of some really good ideas. I wish the game was more modular, I wish you could put water, poison, or lava in any level, I wish you could toggle night-time aesthetics, music, and mechanics separately, hell, more than that, I wish the night-time mechanics were a separate option altogether from the theme, and I wish you could use whatever music you wanted for whatever stage you wanted. There's just a lot of problems with modularity. If you want to use the tools in the specific way the devs intended you're allowed, otherwise you're blocked. Only three liquid speeds, only three scroll speeds, no way to set, say, a trigger for liquid to move to a specific place or something like that, no way to permanently change between different sound effect music tracks partway through a stage, only two subworlds, it just leaves me with a lot of frustration trying to put my ideas into action. More than anything the game could really just use like a trigger/flag system, and I hope they add one.
