Rewatching this in 2022.. man.. both teams were going at it. That off the backboard layup by Hicks was CRUCIAL!! And then that steal to seal it was a moment I’ll never forget. What a wonderful feeling it is to watch your team get redemption after a heartbreaking loss the year before. Just wish Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson could’ve enjoyed it with them 😭

glad unc won but man the refs called some ? calls on both sides
Still feel this is one of the most underrated title games ever. Very few times do we get the two best teams in the nation. Gonzaga was not only the best offensive team, but they were a top 5 defensive team. They dominated most metrics, which factors in SoS. But North Carolina was right behind them in those metrics with a coach with plenty of final 4 experience. Only two things were bad about this game. The refs were terrible, and the bad calls went both ways. It was if they wanted Zach Collins out of the game who was the most gifted player on the floor. The other was Nigel Williams-Goss, one of my all-time favorite college players reinjuring his ankle. He made so many clutch plays, but when he hurt his ankle, game over. Coach Few should have used him as a decoy, but the big game dominator insisted on taking the tough shots. I felt so bad for him when Meeks blocked his shot for the game winning score. Even if healthy, Nigel may have missed but he deserved a better chance. But all teams who win titles need to catch some breaks. Another reason this game was so important is that so much of what Gonzaga does is based on the Carolina System. When Few first landed the GU job, Roy and Wanda took him under his wing at Nike events. Few looked up to Roy so much.

Totally incorrect. The refs actually called the game correctly. I'm not saying that there weren't any ticky tack calls that night (cause EVERY game has at least a couple), but the emphasis ALL SEASON had been on calling games tighter to help CLEAN UP the physical play & ultimately lead to better flowing games. What you saw in the title game were the TWO BIGGEST TEAMS in college hoops, who both had good depth. Neither team backed down from each other. Rather, BOTH teams backed their opponents down on the block & posted up all night long (including multiple instances of both teams' Point Guards posting up). The "chopped up" flow of the game (& high number of FTs) isn't on the refs. Their responsibility is to call the fouls fairly and accurately as they see them - whether it's the first 5 minutes of a game or the last 5, or whether it's the first game of the season or the last game of the season. This was on the players - from BOTH teams. It wasn't necessarily "a pretty game", but it was still exciting & the better team won. Folks who don't understand this are usually of the "entitled sect" or they just have a general overall ignorance to officiating. Or both.
What a comeback from NC, Gonzaga ram out of fumes in the second half and NC was more than ready
Refs took away the flow of the game with ticky tack calls all night long. Send that officiating crew back to high school games.

Almost 4 years later and still love this #tarheelnation
It's not that the refs gave UNC the game, its just that they took over the game completely. They didn't let either team play their game, put both teams best players in foul trouble, and never let either team get in a rhythm because they were too scared they were going to get called for a foul. It's the championship game, let the players play for God's sake.

David William Riney was cheering in heaven NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS WON YES
Rick Pitino explained something I was unaware of. The NBA wanted to increase scoring to make the game more exciting. Their answer-call more fouls and open up driving to the basket. NCAA did the same thing. Not blaming the ref's as much knowing the directive from the NCAA was to call more fouls especially on drives to the basket.
I remember that year my Tar Heels went through the NCAA tournament. Whooped everybody and went on to win the national championship to be the best team in the country
This could well be Gonzaga's year if Covid doesn't cancel it like last year. A clean program where players have to go to class. Go Zags!

If UNC made at least 75% of its free throws, which is not unreasonable to ask, and if all of Jackson's 19 shot attempts were 2 pointers, instead of jacking up (and Missing) 9 3 point attempts, I conservatively estimate that the final score of this game would have been 90-65. This game was not as close as the scoreboard showed.

You never want to meet UNC no matter how bad UNC season is. Play anyone else but UNC
for any basketball players or coaches or anyone that knows the game well, is the level of play from college to the NBA drastically different with the NBA being a whole different level of top level play or is the reason that so many D! players fail to succeed in the NBA because of the style of play? i ask because there are so many very good college players even potential super stars but majority of them dont pan out even if they are drafted very high. its more often nowadays that a non-top 3 pick ends up becomnig a star and many many top 3 guys never finding success in the league and i just cant tell if its the level or style of play that is the major factor
Go NORTH CAROLINA!
