Unfortunately, I don't think SIGNALIS would make it anyway. For all the waves that game made in the indie scene, I haven't seen much about it beyond that space. I think it would have to get an award chosen by critics to win anything, and those awards usually go to the big-name titles.

to be fair you will almost never see a Horror game earning awards despite some of them being very good.

Hi-Fi Rush being snubbed is genuinely disappointing. I loved every second of that game, other than the timed escape sequence with like 200 insta-death points in it - and even that wasn't so bad once i got the hell over myself and learned how to play the freakin' game. :(

I went from "I hate that Troy is doing this" to "I hate that Troy has to do this" quite quickly. It's more embarrassing than ever to be English.

Yeah it was weird, Troy came off as a pretentious twat, but I still felt bad that he was saddled with that mess. Apparently he was a last minute replacement host since the hostess that was selected first wanted to make a political statement about Gaza during the awards, and was told no by the producers so she quit. It's clear they never went through a rehearsal with Troy, and that they should have limited the amount of alcohol available so people weren't intoxicated during the broadcast.

I feel like video games should have a dual-genre classification. One genre for how you interface with the game, and one for the themes/tone/narrative of the game. “Platformer” or “MetroidVania” or “Dating Sim” are examples of interfacing-genres, while “Horror” or “Mystery” or “Urban Fantasy” are theme-genres.

Surprised they didn’t even mention the Dave the Diver controversy, ESPECIALLY when the developers have said “we are not an indie studio.”

To go back to the retention thing, it's pretty easy to explain: the audience you guys have cultivated is used to longer form content ala Super Best friends, so we are more used to watching stuff all the way through. The newer generations of audiences bounce from content to content, so the retention from that type of audience is lower.

This year’s Game Awards should have a professional fighter jump out of the front row when someone rushes the stage and just start doing combos on them for like 3 minutes straight as a warning to others

A reminder that Team Cherry is comprised of exactly 3 people; a programmer, an artist(who draws everything by hand) and a musician. The original Hollow Knight took about 4 years to make, 5 if you count the completion of the dlc(2013-2017/2018). Silksong started development in 2019, so its been in active development presumably for about 4 years as well. Also a reminder that the scope of Silksong is larger than the first and it's going to be releasing on all consoles unlike the first game at launch. Also a reminder that Silksong is not being crowdfunded like the first game, outside of the initial funding for what was originally suppose to just be a smaller dlc add-on for Hollow Knight. Also a reminder that all the dlc/expansions to the original Hollow Knight were free. Also a reminder that we had global viral pandemic that undoubtedly had an impact on development time that Team Cherry had no control over. I know the meme is that "Silksong is never coming out" but Team Cherry seems to be taking the same amount of time making Silksong as they did Hollow Knight. They're trying to make a sequel to what is arguably one of the best action platformers ever made so try to cut them some slack and be patient. Good games take time, and I don't think it's fair treat Silksong like vaporware.

They at the very least would have to find and hire an extremely skilled PR person and dedicate significant ammounts of time to consider each and every aspect of the game that thry can or not talk about being risk free of cuts or significant changes.

Actually, y'know, the CastleGoldenBeasties would be a interesting GOTY podcast show. Maybe get some of the friends of the show in there (like Suzy) and have a real proper scrum over some weirdo categories. Also I think I'd be down for splitting GOTY down to New IP Debut versus Returning IP.

Apparently the Golden Joysticks had an open bar that started at 1PM, when the event started at 6PM

tbh it makes sense that Best Esport is the same as last year given that the best sports are generally going to be the ones that people have sunk a lot of time into so you have a lot of high level play. It's just kinda stupid that it's a category at all, like imagine a "Best Sport" award where football just wins every year 20 years in a row.

i'm being completely honest when i say i have no clue where people got this idea E3 was cringe, at least not much more than any other event like it, Game Awards included. Maybe crowbat's video on Konami's 2010' E3 presentation got everyone think E3 was just like that but the only difference i saw between TGA and E3 is that you got the whole package all at once but instead of a bunch of people we never heard before that companies pay to hype up their games, now we have one guy we know who does the hype

Your game has to be in a stable and playable state Day 1. The actual award isn't a trophy, but rather you just get a kiss on the head from Miyamoto and a round of applause.

The main takeaway is that Hello Kitty is up for an award and that's great.

A bit late now to comment, but jeff gerstmann has talked about the voting process for the TGA. It boils down to: - the TGA gives the judges the categories - each judge submits a minimum of 3 games per category, up to a maximum of 5 - if a judge cannot come up with 3 games they may abstain from that category - once all these are tallied and the nominees determined then they are given to the judges for final voting.

I don't want to be too hardcore a fan/hater, but should Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty even really count for this year? It comes with what is basically a complete game overhaul, but its still a DLC to a full, non-early access game that was released in a prior year, yet its being treated like a whole new game that came out this year on the Game Awards. Xenoblade 3, a GOTY contender last year, had a major story DLC release earlier this year as well, and its got jack-shit on that ballot.

I get that some people like to see garbage, but even they have to have a limit with train wrecks like this.

16:31 the only outlier is PUBG as it was a console launch exclusive for them in 2017, Hi-Fi Rush not being at all nominated was a big shock though, definitely would have liked to see it nominated over RE4 Remake.

Millennials just have the eternal ire of their Baby Boomer parents for reasons lost to time, they're the generational scape-goat martyrs sacrificed upon the altar of time for all future generations. It's also doubly weird to make those jokes targeting any generation younger than millennials too as the video game industries primary demographic is the youngest generations. It'd be like watching the Lego company mock children for playing with toys. I just don't understand the need to punch down at younger generations, especially over things like this. It screams desperation and insecurity to gatekeep things like this all in the name of some form of generational identity in the absence of an actual personality. Magazines are still very well alive and prevalent they've just adapted to the digital age and were actually quite suited for it due to their primarily subscription and ad based revenue model meshing nicely with the internet and its short form content catering to specific niches. Despite all that the vast majority of magazine subscriptions and sales are still primarily physical though digital is growing by leaps and bounds every year and I predict will one day supplant physicals. I think whomever wrote that joke (Jordan), just outed how out of touch they are instead of dunking on the youths. Everything about that joke was awful and it was the one part of the show that wasn't "so bad it's good" and instead was just plain bad unironically.

For me have watched around 90% of every Castle Super Beast clip that has been put out, consecutively for the past two years., and a prolly a 3rd from the old SBFP podcast over the past decade. I am sure this is the case for many subscribers, and even in this comment section I am seeing familiar usernames.

I'm 1000% with Pat on the Ongoing and Esports categories. It's the same 5 games every single year. I think those two categories just need to be axed at this point. Also, all the usual garbage of the same games in every category, and things being in certain categories and not others seemingly arbitrarily. FF16 should be on best action, and as much as I love Baldur's Gate 3, it should not be on best score. It should be on best audio design. The sound design in that game is fantastic. The music? I can think of like one stand out track. The fact that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk isn't on Best Score is a crime.

This all went on and I somehow MISSED IT!?!

While Armored Core is a niche series, it feels similar to Hi-Fi Rush in the sense that it probably deserved to be nominated for more.

Sifu being categorized as a fighting game is completely baffling to me as I thought the community was in 100% agreement that “Fighting Game” meant a game where the core gameplay consisted off competitive versus matches. P v P or P vs CPU. Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter are Fighting Games. A game that is fundamentally P v E cannot be a Fighting Game. Although if Sifu came out in the ‘90s, it would have been called a “Beat ‘em up” it is rare to see that associated with non-retro games today and Sifu isn’t supernatural enough to get the “Character Action Game” label.

Say what you want about the Oscars, but I think they have it right to let the year actually finish and then do the awards in March. There is no reason to do it at the beginning of December. It's like Chained Echoes didn't even exist. Also I don't know how we can unironically have an "action/adventure" label in 2023. How do you even compare Alan Wake 2 to Spider-man 2?

But a lot of that ended in the early to mid 00s when gaming was going hella mainstream and the corpos and shills really started taking over the industry. Like how can you take a gaming awards show seriously when there was a year where the pathetic journos used it as a grand stand for TLOU2? Like, the type of player that is into that has very specific standards, and if a new game doesn't meet them, then they just simply continue to play whatever game they were already playing. Fan voting is a popularity contest

The problem with fan voting is that garbage often has a much larger fandom than actual good quality entertainment. If we were looking at things from the perspective of film, then every film award would go to every piece of superhero trash that got released that year.

You get skill points to spend on abilities when you level up in Spider-Man 2, therefore Spider-Man 2 is an RPG. Or how about any game where you're clearly expected to have every skill on the tree by the end of the game can just gtfo of the RPG category? Was Jedi Survivor an RPG? I dunno, I didn't play it, but the first game sure as heck didn't feel like one. It was just an action game where you had your fun restricted until you grinded enough skill points to have a complete character.

I agree that more than 10 games need the attention on these. Gravity Circuit being one example. Also TMNT got snubbed for best OST last year.

I’m with Pat on Mario Wonder. It’s… Fine? I’m like 4 “worlds” in and it’s a perfectly acceptable Mario game.

if Pat had his own game awards, they'd all go to games from nearly 20 years ago and get mad when we tell him he's old for it

Does anyone actually put any weight in GotY awards anymore? I remember back in 2014 Dragon Age Inquistion and Shadow of Mordor won most of the awards that year. This was the same year as Wolfenstein NO, Bayo2, Undertale, and Overwatch, so I realized that being a western developed open world game is literally the only criteria that matters to a ton of people.

i could be completely wrong on this but i think among us won a award in 2020....even though it came out in 2018 it sad when i watch a award show not to see who wins but to see new game announcement and cringe i want to thank pat for making the last 2 video game award show bearable as i watch them live with him and pagie

The streamer, content creators and sports everything awards are so.. well Everytime when they say a name I literally say who. Because 95% they are so unknown or niche it seems like a waste of time while I don't know devs can give speeches that are longer then 30seconds

Pat's description of the Golden Joysticks Awards sounds much worse than I imagined. Makes me want to watch it myself, but not really. I have seen enough cringe in my lifetime to try actively seeking one.

I had to stop watching when he made a joke about how "Millennials" don't know what magazines are. Even if he said Gen Z the joke would still be incredibly hacky and lame. Also this was the first joke.

The Steamer Awards was founded by QTCinderella, Ludwig's girlfriend, in 2022. Who wins Streamer of the Year, Ludwig. "Winners were then determined using a weighted combination of the online popular vote (70%) and panelist vote (30%)." Fans of their circle will be the majority, so of course it will be in their favor.

Still surprised that people would even care for game rewards. Every year for what feels like over a Decade now it has felt like nothing more than a waste of time.

Are you guys just forgetting that among us won so many awards back a couple years ago? I don’t believe in budget bias, indie games like among us and hades have proven otherwise. You also have to realize the vast majority of people are terminally online

14:45 The game awards frustrate me. I love most of the games that were nominated but Jedi Survivor should have been nominated more. Super Mario RPG got nothing.

AC6 game of the year. Most effort put into it, most SOVL, best gameplay, and it wasnt a reha- I mean remake.
