Golden Eagle Cam in Latvia | Prey delivered finally | 06-12-20 | 8:42 p.m.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

On 06-12-20 at 8:42 p.m., Virsis, the adult male, brought a larger bird to the nest. Klints, the little chick, had eaten earlier in the day but not enough for its liking or its benefit. Food deliveries to the nest have been sporadic and inconsistent more recently, and Spilve has been spending considerable time away from the nest in search of prey.
Today, just before Virsis brought the bird for a late supper, Spilve landed on an adjacent branch then moved onto the nest briefly before departing. Soon after, Virsis delivered his prey and left the nest rather quickly. Spilve returned a short time later to feed Klints.
It's very likely that Spilve and Virsis were hunting together late in the day, improving their chances of providing food for Klints.

Prey delivered finally...but not fed to starving eaglet. He was eventually fed this meal, but also eventually starved to death so this clip is a perfect microcosm for the eaglets entire life.

So sad the outcome of this nest last year...this was difficult to forget. Spilvie was first time mom and young, and Virsis brought in food, but not enough. This clip shows Dad just left the food and Klints was not able to feed himself, mom feed him on her return,. Then Virsis disappeared after a while and food was more scarce, for Spilvie and Klints. Spilvie had to travel far and leave Klints alone for long periods of time hunting for food. When Klints died from starvation, Spilvie showed emotion-like feelings and protected his remains. She visited the nest for awhile checking on the remains on the nest, and covering him in greenery. Not sure what happened to Virsis, whether he had a confrontation with an intruder and was injured or possibly killed, or if he was chased away. No other male, however took over the nest, so possibly Versis was injured and not able to fly back to his nest. They were Young and inexperienced along with there being a shortage of food, this was more than they could handle. Fly high little Klints, you were special. Spilvie, I hope you are carrying on in another part of the forest and that, somehow you have reunited with Virsis.

It's in the parents instincts to protect their young. Don't read more into it than what's truly there. These are natural born killers and I'm sure once the chick died, once the parent figured out it wasn't moving anymore, the parent made a meal outta the dead Eaglet. These are Eagles. Not feathery humans. Human emotions, feelings and thoughts don't belong in an Eagles world.

@@Butterfly-mt5ml Whats up fellow monkey hater ! You gotta give eagles a little more credit though. People do like to anthropomorphize animals way too often but these eagles are pretty smart for the most part. Most animals will devour there young right away but I've noticed with eagles they usually try to bury it, or they take it away from the nest and will end up snacking on it from there. Maybe they don't have feelings like us but they do show emotion, I've witnessed it too many times over the years with differ circumstances. Monkeys on the other hand give no fucks about anything besides food disgusting dumpster goblins. There's a few species of eagle that mainly hunt monkeys which again makes them one of my favorite animals

@@debbiepowers4743 As was I. You have no idea, just as I don’t, if she consumed him or not. These are birds of prey. A dead chick is a valuable food source that they’re not going to waste. Especially when food is as scarce as it was during this nesting year.

Being capable of tearing off chunks from a carcass develops with standing behavior. Klints was only 33 days old in this video. Successful tearing of carcasses generally does not begin until golden eaglets are 45-55 days of age, though I have seen two eaglets pull it off at a younger age with more delicate, smaller avian prey. It takes a fair amount of strength and coordination to do. It is simply not possible until they are older.

That's not true at all. Most eagles by week 3 are already consuming a lot of food left over on their own, even seen 2 eagles eat a hawk alive over 2 hour window. Shitty way to die and each bite was small, but they learned important lessons on how to cut and tear. This golden eagles prey though is way too big for this young gun to do anything with. Really hope this wasn't the nest who's eaglet starved because of young inexperienced Mom
