    I worked at hard chrome plating shop for 20 years where we had a tank that was 22 feet deep by about 12 feet square.It was the best learning experience of my life.Plated 5 ton printing rolls from time to time.Was in ah of there beauty. I will be building my self a stripping take for sure as it is just the reverse of plating.I suggest learning this as it very fun and rewarding work.Great video.Thanks for posting such great content. Interesting video. So I have a bunch of gold plated jewelry I want to do this with but the jewelry is covered with other things like tiny stones that hold no value. Would I be able to do this with all the other stuff (stones and such) attached to the jewelry and still recover the gold? Would the non gold slag just melt away in the acid?

  • @sreetips

    +jim hawk - hello, removing the stones is not necessary. The slag should not present a problem either. So long as the jeweler's items are not all gummed up you should be able to run it all through the cell just like I did in the video. Hope this helps

    Roger Dodger looks like I need to look for a new battery charger then. Thank you for the response.... One other question if you don't mind answering is. With this method is it only the gold that's targeted and the base metal is untouched or is there some level of bimetallic contamination. And if only gold is removed is the carat metal left behind and what you get is 24k?

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    8 жыл бұрын

    As far as I can tell, the black powder that comes off the jewelry is gold only. But there is bound to be some other metals that get mixed in with the black gold powder so it would be close to 24k, but not the industry standard of .9995 pure. To get it to that level of purity it must be refined after it gets recovered in the cell in order to remove any other metals present. Please remember that I am RECOVERING the gold by reverse plating it off the jewelry in the cell. Then, I REFINE the recovered gold to high purity. Recovery and Refining are two separate operations and require different procedures and different chemicals. For example, I would never try to use Aqua Regia to recover the gold from gold plated jewelry. And I would not use sulfuric acid in the refining process (except when I add a little sulfuric to the dissolved gold to precipitate out any lead).

    The gold comes off the plated items as a fine black powder. And there is a small amount of base metals in with the black powder. But these are easily removed during the refining of the black gold powder.

    Hello, you do NOT want to dilute the sulfuric acid, it must be 98% concentrated sulfuric acid. Rooto Drainer cleaner is 98%. So is Liquid Fire - both available at Ace Hardware. You must use a manual battery charger, one without automatic circuitry that shuts of by itself once certain parameters are reached.

    The gold plated items must make contact with both the anode and the cathode (through the electrolyte) in order for electricity to flow and for the gold plating to reverse-plate off the items. I don't think computer boards will work here because they will not conduct the electrical flow.

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    +zackcat276 I learned from another refiner. I have never taken a chemistry class. You want a manual battery charger, not an automatic. 12 volt setting, yes. Sulfuric acid dissolves organic material the best. That's it preferred for drain cleaner.

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    8 жыл бұрын

    +zackcat276 An automatic battery charger senses when the battery is charged and turns itself off internally once a full charge is achieved. A manual battery charger will not do this. It will stay on until you unplugged it from the wall socket. I think the sulfuric acid does react with the water and produces much heat. That's why it's best to siphon all the water from the drain before the sulfuric acid drain cleaner is added. I think it's in the directions on how to use it as drain cleaner.

If you have silver plated items is there a way to reverse electroplate them or is nitric acid still the best way way to separate from base metals? 2. Good question. I've only done this experiment three times using gold plated items as the source material. I've never tried gold filled or karat gold in the sulfuric acid stripping cell. I suppose that it would work but I believe that the cell would heat up and become saturated with base metals very quickly. 10k gold is an alloy of gold, silver, copper and zinc. Sulfuric acid will dissolve silver (but it doesn't do it very well) so the electrolyte may get full of dissolved silver as a result.

    Yes, please see my stock pot videos. My stock pot is a small HDPE bucket loaded with copper metal. All my acidic gold refining waste goes into my stock pot. In the stock pot, any precious metals in solution in the waste "cement out" on the copper as a black mud that settles to the bottom of the bucket. It is far better to "cement out" the traces of PMs rather than trying to recover these tiny amounts from the waste. It's been in operation for 2 1/2 years. The black mud is about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch deep. I'm saving it until I retire from refining as a hobby. Then I'll recover the black mud and refine the gold and platinum group metals for a nice bonus. Harold_V on the gold refining forum calls it the "stock pot retirement plan".

    Calvin, as you deplate the material, the cell will heat up and start acting weird, especially when the electrolyte gets full of the black powder. Be sure to monitor the temp and let it cool off before you go on. It took about 2200 grams of gold plated to get just one gram of pure gold. When the cell is full of black powder you would do well to resist the urge to get the gold quickly like I did in the video. Instead, let the black powder settle until the electrolyte is completely clear (may take several days but this will increase the yield) then carefully siphon off the clear electrolyte with a small PVC tube into a seperate container until you have only the black powder in the bottom of the cell with just a little electrolyte. Pour the powder into a large jar full of a gallon of water, stir, and then let it settle completely again - could take 24 hours - be patient and you'll be rewarded. Then siphone off the clear liquid and get your clean black powder. A little residual sulfuric acid won't hurt. I did it different in the video because I was in a hurry. If you take your time and do it slowly, waiting for the powders to settle completely, your yield will be higher than mine. Take your time, don't rush it. Trying to force things to happen will cause problems. Hope you do well with your first try.

The exception, some white golds can be alloyed with nickel to give it a white color. Nickel is very slightly magnetic. So if it's white gold and the magnet just barely sticks then it could still be gold. Also, gold necklaces and bracelets have a little clasp or catch that is used to connect the chain around your neck, it has a steel spring in it that will stick to a magnet. If not magnetic then do an acid test. File deep into the metal to remove any gold plating. Then rub a streak of the metal from the filed area on to a touch stone. Apply some gold-testing acid and watch. With gold plated items the streak will almost instantly disappear, which means that it is gold plated and nearly worthless. If the streak remains then it is probably gold. USE CAUTION though. Some metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and nickel will remain on the touch stone and not fade (dissolve) away giving a false positive for gold. If your not careful, you could make a big mistake and pay big money for junk! Experience will help here, but you still have to be very careful.

  • @dekonfrost7

    @dekonfrost7

    6 жыл бұрын

    sreetips this time it was 165 pounds, weighed out into 450 gram lots. I dont do the over the edge thing. Also i actually with those numbers and my lead cathode weighs in at 21/2 pounds i cast it from plumbing lead. So it has a lot of surface area. I reach sometimes 20 amps so that generates a lot of heat. Remember my refining experience has grown but i am an engineer. I actually think i keep it in the 50 f range while running. Keep in mind indo a batch every 20 minutes. My biggest problem is the electrolyte turning into sludge. Not that it gets dilute from ambient moisture. I have a cell thats like 3 liters. So its a lot of wet chemistry. I let the sulphuric au oxid blacks settle. Then decant the sulphuric to a special waste container. Also i use reagent no stabilizers like roto. So this time im not done the wet chemistry. But im about 60-70% done. Yield before scavenging the last of the drop solutions and (i have to use 5 gallon buckets to use as rinse.) i have 24k 115.89 grams. Also not that at this scale i cant search through for any pins, and shadowing becomes a real issue as the solution becomes more saturated. Truth be told i have the uwin. Formula. Just i didn't feel like building all the equipment to use it at scale. But i will.

    This is just speeding up the process of removing the gold from the jewelry or computer chips to a suspended solution. You still have to precipitate the solution to get the gold. Its not really electroplating. Like the jewelry that you are removing the gold from. It was electroplated with gold in the first place. The gold was deposited on the copper base from a suspended solution.Why cant you do real electroplating and remove the gold from one side (positive anode) and to deposit on to the other side (negative cathode)? Use the Copper basket as the anode and a piece of gold for the cathode?

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the sulfuric acid stripping cell will strip off the gold very quickly. But the gold coating is very thin and one kilo will only yield about less than half a gram of gold. I would wait until you have several kilos before you try the experiment. That way you'll get Some gold and not just a little piece like I did. Also, instead of diluting the acid to recover the black gold powder, I would recommend that you allow the cell to settle completely (may take several days or up to a week) and then siphon off the clear acid. Then dilute with lots of HOT water and allow it to settle completely again (just a few hours) and siphon off the waste water. This will greatly increase your yield. Diluting the entire cell like I did in the video is wasteful. I only did it to save time.

    No, I don't know the exact amounts that those pins will yield, that's just an educated guess. I've never actually run those pins through a cell. The best way to tell is to get several kilos and run them through. That will give you an idea of what you can expect. This type of scrap is way over priced. It will be difficult to make a profit when you have to buy the scrap. There is no substitute for experience.
