Thanks for the great video and for narrating it properly which is much better than most do leaving us to do our best to read between the lines which I might add is less than ideal with this steep of a learning curve. That's also a nice setup you have with all the proper glassware and all that which puts my coffee pot to shame

You might try a little dry SMB on the top so that it can linger there for a minute and offer more contact time rather than hydrating it first (just an idea), and don't you just love how it transitions like magic from clear to dark as the gold precipitates out 😊

Great video! 😊 Nice recovery. if your using a nitric acid 3 ml at a time, you shouldn't need to denox your solution as when your boiling Aqua Regia the nitric will boil off over time. Then you can add more nitric till everything goes into solution. Just add small doses of Nitric so you don't waste expensive nitric and time. Also you can use a squirt of sulfuric acid to precipitate any lead which might be present in solution. It wont hurt anything. It will get filtered out before you get to sodium metabisulfate which you can add straight to gold solution without pre mixing to drop gold. Do a stannus chloride test as you did in the video to see if all gold has dropped. 😊😊😊

That’s great! Thank you! I heard/read/watched somewhere that adding sulfamic acid would convert to sulfuric and do the same as adding some sulfuric acid. I am not sure where I got that. Thoughts?

@@KKRRenewables you're correct. But that will only happen if you have an excess of nitric or nox gas dissolved in your solution. Personally im not as cautious adding h2no3 a couple mils at a time... i usually know fairly well the yield so i know how much it'll take and add just a bit more. There's always silver alloy in with the gold occasionally lead, it's never pure so after everything's dissolved I will add a few ml sulfuric, filter then dilute the solution with water to precipitate out the silver chloride which is insoluble in water. At that point I don't like doing a drop on a diluted solution. t takes forever. It's a pain in the ass and the pH is never right to get a proper drop. So what I do is I'll throw it in a boiling flask and boil it down to about half of its original volume. Give it a nice healthy squirt of fresh HCL.... Then drop with smb like its a bad habit. The reason I say that is I do have an excess of nitric but not a huge one, all that boiling will get rid of pretty much all of it. and if it doesn't get rid of all of it, there's only a trace left and that trace gets a immediately decomposed by the SMB

I'm curious if you could explain why you chose Jet-Dry instead of another surfactant or was it just what you had available at the time because it's got other things in it or was it the drying agent you were after rather than surfactant? 18:03 Also great choice for your rinse bottle I've got one of those around here I'll have to find

Is the fine black stuff you're trying to remove plastic like from gold corner BGA chips or silica glass like I would get from DDR1 IC RAM chips? I'm kind of new to this but I'm not real sure how to get rid of either one very efficiently without losing what I'm after but I recently read about something called PETase which is an enzyme that breaks down plastic remarkably fast and I've considered UV-B as another possibility but was hoping you would already done all the trial and error and come up with something efficient and practical that you could share for the plastic and I'm still clueless on the silica glass which has me a little frustrated and in a holding pattern until I get it figured out

It’s plastic. I’d like to get rid of the silica die also, but I don’t want to risk loosing those little “dots” of gold where the bonding wires attach. Thank you for all the comments and tips!

Just finished the last of my chips. I had the same problem. Lots of metal mixed in the dust and the dust itself was impossible to crush. Had to end up running it wet through a blender for a long time. I use a bluebowl myself, and ran the dust over and over, crushing it more than once. I found that as long as copper pins keep showing up there will always be some gold underneath.

If you know for sure it's just carbon you're trying to get rid of 22:12 piranha solution should turn it into CO2 gas cleanly and efficiently and disperse leaving everything else behind or in solution

I have about 4 pounds grinded down and sitting in a bucket right now.... so is it appropriate to then next do an HCL boil until all base metals are dissolved then Aqua Regia? This is my first time doing flatpacks so I wasnt sure. Thanks!! Edit: would a nitric boil be better?

If you’ve burned and then ground the chips, the next step I’d take is to magnetically separate the ferrous metals and then sieve out the larger metals of non-ferrous materials. This will save you a ton of acid and some time. Once you’ve got as many base metals mechanically separated as you can, then you can use buckets of water to gravity separate the burned carbon ash. Once you’ve done those steps, then you can go HCl or HNO3 but, HCl will be much cheaper. It will take a lot longer to rid the base metals but the cost in worth it to me. Congrats on starting your journey. Be sure to review www.goldrefiningforum.com to learn as much as you can, and wear your PPE. Fume hood or outdoors is mandatory, the gases produced are deadly. Stay safe and have fun!

Nice work KKR! Strong stannous tests, great flashover during precipitation, good recovery from the accidental dehydration and surprisingly clean for a recovery. Bit of faffing about but thats probably to be expected early on, id be similar. Probably shouldnt bother filtering your waste ferric/copper chloride. If you're concerned just come back to it later, implement a temporary stock pot. Use the same method that you used for your gravity separation (spritz the surface, allow to settle, decant) im not lab trained but i think a professor would confiscate your thermometer if you use it as a stirring rod as someone else mentioned. Fantastic job man. Good results.

I have just one more thing to say.... Dont invite the trouble of having your HNO³ sitting on the edge of your bench. Its inviting a catastrophe that could be so easily avoided. Burns arent fun, skin or eyes, damage to your surrounding equipment, fumes etc. Its not worth it. You got it man. Cant wait to see the next ones and thanks for sharing!

Another tip. Don't leave your solutions on heat unattended. ☺️ but if you're like me you'll do it anyway. What I'll do if i have to step away, is i got a spare wifi security camera i just setup to watch my progress. checking it via my phone every lil bit. That $30 camera has likely saved me hundreds in glassware from shit overheating and breaking

LD Carlson brand from Amazon. It’s no longer available. Other KZreadrs are using Bonide from Lowe’s. But you have to be careful and ensure you get the one that’s Sodium Metabisulfite. I’m sure any search hit on Amazon will return a product to use. That’s awfully trusting, so read the reviews. I did not and got lucky. I bought a 3 1 pound bags years ago and am still using the same original purchase.

39:32 probably isn't necessary but better safe than sorry as I think what you had after the evaporation was almost exactly the same as your end result will be after rehydrating it and dropping it using a precipitant

53:49 you waited quite a while for that to settle shouldn't you do another stannous chloride test just to be safe as you used a decent amount of nitric acid which can be a real pain in the ass sometimes

Certainly a better way of getting gold out of chips,Its worth about £175.00 gross.

You shouldn't need anywhere near that much nitric acid and I would recommend starting with about half of that 2 mL but not until after that Hydrochloric is up to temp so you don't have to worry about excess to deal with later as it's expensive and even more costly when you lose gold

Fascinating. This video should be re-titled 'How to make a really easy process staggeringly complicated'. I get that you are a beginner, and that is great, but there are literally dozens of good instructional videos out there that more than cover this process.

Definitely not faked…I was shocked though. They were 100% the TQFP. I try to show the good / bad / ugly in a comprehensive video. I use the data I collect to guess at the gold return in future videos so I have a vested interest in being as accurate as I can be. And it’s aligned with my abilities. I’m sure the professional refiners could get more! 😊

Please do not use a thermometer as a stirring rod. mercury and gold do not mix well together.

You should get a new scale 49:54 as that one went from 6 G to 4 G while you weren't looking which is horribly inaccurate which might also have something to do with the amount of wind you're having according to your wind chime I hear in the background

I really appreciate that comment. I’ve had a couple folks tell me the same thing so I’ve been researching on how to improve my audio in my editing. I I only recently learned that KZread will squash the whole audio if there are parts of it that are too loud.’m fairly new, and will improve, so please check back for more content.

Having done this hundreds of times i just know you did not get that much gold from that amount of flatpacks !!!

I must say I was surprised myself. I wasn’t expecting that much but it’s in line with information on the gold refining forum. Most of these chips were same manufacturer so that may have contributed to the great yield.

This is kind of painful to watch. You really went the long way around everything. No need to denox. You didn’t use nearly enough nitric to have to worry about it. Oh is irrelevant. It will be very acidic. It’s supposed to be. Just add SMB and precipitate.

I'd like to add to CuttinEJ's comment so correct me if I am wrong EJ; in situations where he doesn't have any urea to denox he can always use extra smb, correct? The sodium metabisulfite will get rid of the nitric; however, extra will need to be used, correct? Edit: Also just an FYI - I remember learning in one of my Chem classes in high-school once upon a time that UV breaks up the molecules in the nitric and allows it to evaporate out of the solution it's in. In other words if you just leave it in direct sunlight for a day or two it will also denox that way.

Urea doesn’t denox, although there is some risk of creating explosive compounds when trying to use it to denox with heat. The first step is to not use so much nitric acid that you need to worry about denoxing. Use small, incremental doses of nitric. Just enough to dissolve all of the metal. In the case of gold, a good way to remove excess nitric (which shouldn’t be very much) is to simply leave it on the heat and allow it to evaporate until the volume of liquid is reduced by about half. You can go quite a bit further until it becomes almost a syrup. Then rehydrate back to the original volume with HCl. SMB will remove excess nitric, but you must understand how it does this and that it’s not very efficient. SMB will precipitate the gold and excess nitric will redissolve it almost immediately. So you have to keep adding SMB until all of the excess nitric is consumed. For a very small amount of excess nitric this isn’t a big deal, but for those who go way overboard it’s really just asking for trouble. Now comes the part where I say something that’s true and intended to help you, but which most people take as an insult. Urea goes in the garden. It has no place in this kind of refining. And anyone who has to ask these kinds of questions needs to stop whatever they’re doing and study A LOT before doing anything that involves mixing chemicals and heating them to or near boiling. Please. The gold will keep. Your lungs and eyes won’t. Happy Holidays.
