Gold Plating at Home with Pepetools IPS-Pro Plating System

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Gold plating is often thought of as a bit of a black art, but with the right equipment, it's surprisingly easy. Here I take a silver pendant that I previously metal casted, mask certain parts, and successfully apply a shiny gold coating. This is modern day alchemy at work.

    Wow! That looked remarkably easy to achieve. I hope you didn't cut out all the failures. I'd love to try this sometime in the future (when funds allow) I've done a very agricultural method of nickel plating in the past with decent results. But I'm not a jewelry guy, just interested in the whole process. Great video, cheers!

    so this kit comes with nothing. Just the rectifier which is available on Amazon for $80 and a heater? You have to buy all that other stuff? Where is the value in paying $600 for a $80 dc power station? Because that is all a plating rectifier is. I'm sorry but this is a disservice to devoted fans like me.

    Hello Vogman! I am keen to follow in your "gold-plating over silver" footsteps, however I have a question if you don't mind.. Do you need a nickle substrate first? I am wondering if you would agree with a google search i did suggested the following... "All gold plating on silver requires an “underplate”. Usually nickel but I believe that palladium works but is more expensive. The problem is not the wear but the silver oxidation will show through the gold plating."

    Could you gold plate a watch body for me? Since my dad passed away I have wanted to restore his watch, it’s a simple SEIKO watch. I have it all polished and ready to go. Sadly here in Switzerland they charge 800chf at my local gold store. I’m not ready to buy a kit for just the one watch. If you could help please let me know. Thanks, Ian.

    That power supply looks a little on the cheap side, a shame the need to run the heater prevents using cheaper (but better quality) buck converters.

  • @vogman

    @vogman

    3 ай бұрын

    I'll admit the plastic does give it a cheap look, but it's a capable bit of kit. Power is only part of it... control and safety are much more important. Then there's the extra features which, I confess, allude me at the moment... but it's nice to know they're there in case I actually need them one day 😁

  • @MickTee2k

    @MickTee2k

    3 ай бұрын

    @@vogman Indeed. If it works, it works. As an electrician, (reach out if you need help with any of the terminology or concepts involved) I can say that the safety aspect is important. It is the mains going into the rectifier that is the bit that is the most dangerous and the bit the cheap units cut the most corners on. I would assume that heater that's in a conductive solution is on mains voltage? I'd personally feel much safer with a hotplate and better quality power supply. I recommend an old laptop power supply and an ebay "Buck converter" as a power source - cheap, and safe, and just as many adjustments for when you need them.
