Gold Panning Eastern Ohio

Tom and I go scouting and prospecting on a river in eastern Ohio. We find some nice flakes as well as what looks like a very old hand made fishing weight. It was a fun time and the gold we found warrants bringing in a dredge to be able to sample the bedrock that is buried under the deeper overburden.

To me, it would be more beneficial to go Up stream closer to the source of the water feeding the stream/river !

Did you find any? If you didn't know yes there is small amounts of gold in all creeks and rivers in the 2/3 of the glaciated state. The state was covered with 2 different glaciers, the Wisconsin and Illinois glacier. Most of South west Ohio all the way to Columbus is the end of the illinoian glacier, I hear good pickers are found there. And here in NW ohio and in Eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania was covered with the Wisconsin glacier. That stuff is more fine alluvial gold like dust. You won't get rich from it or anything. People do it as a hobby in ohio. But you never know what you might find. I can't find much about it but I guess near Bellevue ohio in the 80s someone found a giant nugget stuck In some quartz worth at the time 60,000 dollars. But without a picture, or proof I refuse to believe it lol but you can find pickers. Gotta learn the land geography and where the furthest advancement of the glaciers ended, that's where all the best gold is I hear. You can even find beach Gold on all of the great lakes beaches, it's micro specks but its still something. Look for black sand deposits on lake erie, Michigan, Huron, superior. The Great lakes were filled and created by the outwash of the glaciers. Carried alot of that gold back into the lakes.

They say gold rides an iron horse, have you ever checked out the creeks near Weathersfield or Austintown? My ancestors had the Pennel slope coal mine back in the 1800s, and they pulled out a surprising amount of iron ore as well. Always wondered if there was gold in the Mahoning, Meander or Four Mile Run.

You are limited to a 4 inch dredge in Ohio and most waterways are owned by the adjacent property owners so you need to get permission.

For gold in Eastern Ohio you will need to go north of the Ohio river and up into areas that were glaciated or have streams that run south out of the glaciated areas. You won’t find much if any south of the Ohio river.

Thanks for watching! One day I’ll do a sluice video. But I must admit I sluice so little that it may be awhile lol. As for reading creeks you can see some of my videos on my methods. I don’t read creeks like most people do. Mainly because here on the south east coast where the gold is is more so determined by bedrock makeup and where the source is not so much reading gold lines from inside bends and such.
