Going Underground at Mahogany Drift Mine
Take a tour underground at Mahogany Drift Mine. Ronnie, one of our experienced drift mine engagers, explains its history, some of the ways of cutting coal out and the conditions miners worked in whilst underground.
Mahogany Drift mine has recently reopened following closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of our Covid-19 safety measures tours will consist of up to 8 people and we ask that everyone who would like to go underground wears a face covering.

Beamish museum is a great place to visit lots to do and very interesting but going down that mine was a added bonus.
Funny how he walked reminded me of Mr Toad , No wonder older miners walked with bent backs , looks a good tour though
So glad they have this video!! I'm claustrophobic and couldn't go down when I went but now I still get to see it!
An amazing experience. We’ve done it a couple of times and it was well worth it.
I went today it was amazing!
My mams side of the family worked in the mines and they all ended up with all sorts of health issues and died at an early age. When I visited beamish and went down the mine for the tour I was constantly thinking of the people who worked in the mines and how horrible it must have been for them i just wanted to get out within 2 minutes of been in there
Visited it in the 19.90s
Spare a thought for the thousands of adults and children who did it for real. Bronchitis... Pneumonia... Flu...and then there's the lung real problems and the ponies... Thankfully that hell ending.
