    Very clear and easy to follow. Thanks. I never knew we could be so "aggressive" using the length adjusting strap. I treated it much more gingerly before watching this video. I thought it was for semi-permanently adjusting the strap length, not for instantly and frequently adjusting (to wear high on the back so it won't shift, or low on the hip to swing around for front access). I like the XS (extra small) as one of my in-rotation bags for every day urban carry. It has "just enough" organization for me without feeling "feature bloated" (I thought the pre-2012 Timbuk2 Classics were bloated with the full-on thicker ballistics nylon, thicker inflexible webbing, and over-built side clamp for the strap). I like the lack of "accessory madness" on the outside, makes the bag look more-streamlined for me, while it's true that interior water slots risk interior spills, on the other hand I've lost entire bottles slipping out of exterior bottle slots on other bags. My fave feature is the "hidden" handle strap. Avoids the geeky look of the suitcase handles on the early millenium variants. A close second fave feature for me is the "laptop" divider. I like it because it is minimally padded (which saves valuable space) but has that stiffener at the top edge so it doesn't droop into the main compartment and get in the way. On my XS I use the laptop slot for an 8" tablet and for important mail from the mailbox, so I won't lose it. Like you, I miss a zipper slot on the front panel and an open full-width papers slot on the back panel as found on the Patagonia Mini Mass and Black Hole Messenger and some other messenger-like bags. BUT I'm greatful that the Timbuk2 Classic is so clean and is still in production. I don't think even in Timbuk2's own expanded line of semi-messenger bag variants there is anything as appealing as the Classic Messenger. In fact I have come to appreciate the XS extra small version enough to pick up the Small - the one you reviewed here - for flights. To keep at my seat, qualifying as the "personal item" we are allowed in addition to our overhead carry-on cabin luggage. It's just the right size, and since my main overhead bag is often a backpack, it minimizes ticket counter questions and challenges like "you have two (backpack) bags". I noticed your water bottle in the video is tall. I will be using a short (standard sized) bike bottle when I fly with the Small version. That will allow the "ear flaps" at each bag end to fold in to prevent content spill when I shove this under the seat. Two nitpicks: I don't like the key leash inside the central, under-flap zipper pocket. My key chain is to fat to fit the exterior utility pocket - and the bulge uglifies the front profile. I wish the key leash were inside the main compartment. But then, I keep two sets of keys, one in my jacket pocket and the backup inside the Timbuk2. My other nitpick is: Timbuk2 must use the WORST spray water repellent in the world, because the exterior fabric wets out almost instantly, while on other bags the water repellent treatment is usually good enough to bead the water off during pretty heavy rains, and reduce wetting out. Even Timbuk2 seems to recognize the problem, since they sell Scotchgard water repellent spray on their website (I'm going to be treating my bag soon). Of course, the interior tarp material keeps contents dry even when the exterior fabric gets soaked. (I was sold by the sales rep at the factory store that the tarp material was upgraded in 2015 since the prior material was peeling sometimes.) One final observation: sometimes I travel with a backpack for my overnight stuff, sometime with a wheelie. This messenger bag lets me carry body-forward if I need both hands free and am carrying a travel backpack on my back. It's a geeky looking solution - bag sandwich - but for short transfers its an alternative to hand-carrying one of the two bags.

    I appreciate you showing how the bag fits when wearing it, and that it can be worn in the traditional way as well as up toward your back. A lot of videos just focus on the bag itself, rather than user interface, and even their website photos only show the bag being worn in that strapped up style.

    I love this bag. I really like using it as a man purse basically to carry stuff like sunglasses, umbrella, and my pocket parka. The strap is great and I love the materials that they use. It holds up well in the rain and keeps your stuff dry which is somewhat rare for bags in this price range. I've had Patagonia and North Face bags that performed much worse in the rain.

    Best review of this bag on KZread and to be honest on the internet. Thank you very much ! As an event photographer I was looking for a sling/quick access/reliable/action bag that is not a big 21L back pack and the Timbuk2 sling (small) seems to be what I need. It's lowkey, affordable, and does not scream "HEY I am carrying photography gear".

    That is a great bag. I saw one the other day locally and passed it by without doing a deep dive on it as I was looking for a backpack. Those quick adjust straps are a big win. Will have to give it a good look. I noted on the product video for the Timbuk2 Command messenger bag, the velcro under the main flap can optionally be covered so only buckles hold it. I think with the amount of velcro on this one I would cover it with some hook strips to make it quiet when at work etc. Pretty loud to open all that to get a drink. Good review. :)

  • @earlgreybutt
    @earlgreybutt6 жыл бұрын

    I had a timbuk2 classic messenger once which i used for about 3 years. On the outside the cordura has held up extremely well and it looks almost brand new. However, on the inside, the waterproof material on inside of the flap is almost shredded due to the constant opening and closing that the flap has to endure. It fits more than it looks like it would and organisation is sufficient. If there's a version without the waterproof material on the flap I would definitely consider buying it again.

    Same here. The quality of these bags are not the way they used to be. A friend of mine has used his for more than 20 years and it still has everything working and not ripped while I had my newer model with inside lining falling to pieces. My version is not as well made. Timuk2 are selling out their brand.

    Cool bag and thanks for another outstanding review. I appreciate the help very much. I've been looking at the Commando backpack from Timbuk2 but I went with a North Face Surge instead (and glad I got that one). I'm also wearing my Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoody, by the way, right now. I learned about it from you and love it. I probably wear it 2 or 3 times a week and need to get another color! By the way, have you ever used a 'camera bag' as an EDC sling bag? I use one from Vanguard (called a Sedona 43) that I really like a lot and I can tell from your videos that you might really like it for certain purposes as well.

    I have used this bag. I found that the inside lining deteriorated. Plus I found the large flap very troublesome - when it had stuff inside it really distorted the integrity of the bag - hung way low over the outside of the bag. I found the inside carry for the water to be of limited use for me; took up valuable space that could have been used for other stuff. I hated the bag............if you use it and really like it - good for you

I don’t carry a laptop but an iPad Pro and its keyboard, therefore I didn’t need the Medium size. I’m a leftie and I carry it on my right shoulder. I wish it could be adjustable to leftie too but, at the end of the day, it’s no big deal. Lefties have to adjust as we live in a “rightie” world:) Very good video which made me go for this particular one. I’ve watched lots of them but yours was the clearest and the most “straight to the point” How long have you been using it?

    So timbuck2 founded in 1989 after copying john peters line of mess bags. i think rob honeycutt was boss then. little did he know that he was unable to sell in NYC until i let him. every time he tried to sell in NYC i killed the sale. when he tried to sell an xtra large messenger to Breakaway courier i was informed and had their sample in my hands in 2 hours. i made up the same style and undercut their price. great fun until i relented and let the Chinese made mess bags into NYC. Sadly the business had changed hands and they still don't know how to sew a bag correctly and most of their styles while based on my size and shape are tacky. especially their back packs. lose the three color crap. OH i forgot that was original. Chrome and timbuck2 boast made in USA but in reality are made in China. Chrome has asian owners.

    I love your vids and attitude...however I'm saying this from a place of love can you calm down the hand movements? I can't stop looking at your hands...every infliction of voice = hand movement. Every pause= hand movement. The jazz hands are killing me. Sorry mate I'll try squinting and see if it helps.
