The Pontiac Trans Am, in my 62 year old opinion, was the most under-rated and best performing pony car of them all. I was a car guy from a young age, and started learning automobile mechanics when I was about 13 years old. By the time I was in high school I'd become a speed reader, because I subscribed to Motor Trend , Car and Driver and Road and Track magazines. My last two years of high school I worked half a day and went to school half a day, and was learning automotive mechanics from a guy who'd been a Chrysler maser tech. After H.S. I went to work in a Pontiac dealership, that was in 1979. Eventually I became a licensed aircraft mechanic, and worked for and retired from Delta Airlines. Did you know that the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with the T/A 6.6 engine, four speed and 3.23 gears, had a top speed of 134 mph ? That was unheard of in an American production car in 1979. The corvette couldn't compete. As a matter of fact Road and Track Magazine did a comparison of the corvette and the Trans Am from that year. The corvette with the L82 350 small block with higher compression, and bigger valves. The T/A could pull higher lateral acceleration (cornering g-force numbers), was quicker, faster on the top end, and had better track times, than the corvette. As a mechanic I worked a few late 70's T/A's, and drove them. I'd also worked on and driven a few corvettes. Pontiac did their homework with the T/A suspension and chassis. The chassis had stiffening members in it, that you didn't find in a Z28, and the car was a dream to drive fast. Over a hundred miles per hour it felt like it was nailed to the road. All the cars I worked on and drove included both a hemi powered Polara coupe, a 1970 Lemans Judge with 455 and a turbohydramatic 400 transmission, and a 1970 Mustang Boss 302. I drove them all, and I'd take a Trans Am hands down every time. The Pontiac Motor Division (PMD) truly had their shit together in those days. I can't say enough, but hats off if you were an engineer on the Trans Am, because you built a winner.

Agreed 100%. I have owned many trans ams. But I truly loved my '79 more than car I drove or owned. Some people do not realize that in '79 the L78 / W72 400 actually had 260HP and ran the 1/4 mile in 14.6@95,6mph which than was incredible 😳 And, yes it beat the ass off the '79 L82 Corvette in every category My '79 was bought new, and was gold and gorgeous 😍. They don't make them like this anymore

Love your comments. I owned a 6.6 ‘79 4spd back in 1985 and I beat the piss outta that car. I smoked 5.0 Mustang GTs drag racing, even a magnum pi Ferrari. That TA was awesome.

I had this exact car, except it was the 71 version, with the 455 HO engine, instead of the 400, the interior on the 71 was much improved, but the pearl white paint, and blue graphic was almost identical. The HO engine was definitely not an improvement, not one of Pontiac’s better ideas, the later SD engine was a beast. I loved the car, hated that HO engine, nothing but trouble. Bought mine brand new in 1971, damn I’m old! LOL 😂

The 70-72 Trans Ams were my favorite with their 400 Ram Air and H.O. engines. The 73-74 Trans Ans with the 455 Super Duty engies were awesome but I prefer the looks with the stripes on the first two years of the second generation cars.
