Since even before it’s release, God of War: Ragnarök has received praise and controversy alike for its portrayal of Thor. Unlike the muscular Thor that is typically seen in media, this Thor seemed a bit overweight. Some praised this as a more accurate portrayal whereas others remained unconvinced. The previous God of War game received a small amount of pushback for its unusually villainous portrayal of Thor. Now that God of War: Ragnarök has been released to mountains of praise and awards, it’s time to examine how its Thor adaptation compares to the one found in Norse Mythology.
Is Thor’s appearance accurate to the sources? Odin and Thor have a very negative relationship in the game. Is Thor’s contentious relationship with his father accurate to Norse Mythology? Is Thor’s brutal war on the Jötnar found in God of War accurate to the Norse Myths? We’ll take a deep dive into Norse Mythology so we can answer these questions and more.

I think they wanted to end the norse saga quickly. If they wanted to make the story accurate to norse myth, it'd probably take a total of 3 God of war games. I think theirs plenty of room out there for different variations of Thor, they don't have to be 100% true to the mythology, and can still be good and intersting. Of course they can also be awful... The mythology itself has mostly been lost, as very little was documented. We only have a handful of stories of Thor, and base his manerisms off of what we have, but they do give a fairly clear indication of the type of character he was and the type of deeds he did, as expressed in this video. So the thing about his physique is implied that because he killed all the giants (as far as he knows), there's nothing left for him to do except drink. Even though he uses Magni, Modi, and Baldur as reasons to fight Kratos, hearing about how he'll get to fight the guy that destroyed Olympus probably brought back memories to his glory days of killing giants. Which is why the entire first fight he wants Kratos to stop holding back and give him a proper fight. Probably wants to feel like he's useful again and not lazy and useless.

Glad you covered this topic. I enjoyed your previous video on God Of War and the way they portrayed Thor there. I am glad they added a bit of depth to Thor, making him a tragic antagonist and not an outright villain. He's my favorite of the Aesir and I can really relate to him, both the 616 Marvel and mythological counterparts. As you said; an adaptation doesn't necessarily have to be perfect. However, as much as I am fond of the God of War franchise, it has always had the habit of painting the gods in a rather villainous light as compared to their mythological counterpart. I.E.) Cut dialogue in GOW 3 had Zeus apologize to Kratos before the latter kills him. This would've been more accurate to the myths as, despite Zeus's amorous antics, he was still honorable and fair in some ways like when he punished (his son) Tantalus for killing (his grandson) Pelops and serving the latter's flesh to be consumed by the gods. Sadly, Demeter had consumed his shoulder since she was grieving over Persephone and ate the feast unlike the other gods who realized just what they were eating. So Zeus commissioned Hephaestus to make a new shoulder for Pelops out of ivory. Same goes for Athena who was ultimately shown to be a schemer and not much of a fighter whereas, despite her portrayal by way of the Roman poet Ovid as a spiteful goddess, was always actively assisting heroes like Heracles, Perseus, Odysseus and Diomedes in their adventures. Granted, she was an adviser to Kratos in the first game and in 2 she was simply doing her best to protect Olympus from her brother's wrath and vice-versa. As for being a fighter.. Athena held her own during the Gigantonomachy where she buried the Giant Enkelados under a huge rock that is now the island of Sicily. With that out of the way, thank you again for sharing your knowledge and looking forward to more Thor content from you. 🙏

4:25 - A professional trainer even stated that Thor looked like a professional strongman. 5:50 - False! Frigg is Odin's wife! Freya is *implied* to be his aunt in law in actual myth. The treaty between Freyr & Odin would only be binding by marrying in the royal family & Freya & Frigg have been stated to have different spouse. Freya cries tears of gems after her human husband, Odr, was cursed into becoming a dragon by Odin. Freya rules Folkvangr, half of the good afterlife. There wouldn't be 2 good afterlives if they were married. *Freyr* is considered to be king of the Vanir, in some depiction, at the end Aesir-Vanir war. It was said that Frigg was the daughter of the King. 12:40 - Some versions of the story have Loki kill him by accident while practicing Archery while the Jotun was minding his own business far away. 16:52 - False! Not all Jotun were evil. Jord & the giant that led Baldur's funeral never hurt anybody, yet Thor was bigoted against the ladder. Jotun represent Utangard, chaos, while the Aesir represent Innangard, order. Neither were good nor evil. Odin, like Zeus, could be seen as an oppressor just as much of a protector. The only reason Ragnarök happened because he imprisoned Loki's children without justifiable cause. Fenrir was happy just playing with Tyr until he was imprisoned & swore revenge.

I’ll do my best to answer you 1. Thor may look like a professional strongman, but that doesn’t change the fact that the depictions we have of him don’t and the Viking Age people didn’t see many people with that physique. 2. Frigg is indeed Odin’s wife and Freyja is the wife of Odr. I said that Odin’s wife was what the builder would receive for completing the well in time. I said this because I was referring to Jackson Crawford’s translation of the Poetic Edda: “or Odin’s wife would have to be married to a giant”. This is because Jackson Crawford is a proponent of Óðr and Óðinn being the same person. His reasoning is that their names come from the same root (Óðinn is just Óðr with the added suffix inn meaning “the mad one”), the fact that Óðr is often travelling just like Óðinn, the fact that Freyja’s role as chooser of the slain makes more sense if she was Óðinn’s wife, and the fact that Óðinn has been known to use different names. Óðr is actually only mentioned once or twice in primary sources and his backstory of being the husband Freyja cries after only appears in Snorri’s Prose Edda which is a mostly secondary source. Snorri was writing long after the Viking Age and there are some clear instances where he misinterpreted the information. On top of that Freyja is called Odin’s concubine in a later source Sörla þáttr eða Heðins saga ok Högna (not as reliable, but some evidence). Plus there is the big fact that Freyja and Frigg were likely the same goddess at one point as there are times when details about them are mixed up in the sources (Frigg was once said to have Freyja’s famous falcon cloak). Though they are definitely separate goddesses by the time of the Viking Age as they interact with each other in Lokesanna. Freyja is identified as the goddess on the line in the trade with the Builder in the Prose Edda, but not in Voluspa as the goddess is only identified as “Óð’s girl” or “Óðs mey gefna”. Again Crawford chose to identify Óðr as Odin in his translation. I made the mistake of not comparing it with the old Norse and other translations. I would prefer not to leave anything up for debate, but I thought I’d speak a bit in Crawford’s defense before I blamed his translation. I have no idea where the story of Óðr being turned into a dragon by Óðinn comes from. Given that it’s not within the Poetic Edda, I’d guess that it’s a newer story. Frigg’s father is Fjorgynn and Freyr is not the king of the Vanir. He, Freyja, and Njordr join the Aesir after the war. The Vanir as entity are complicated so I’m just going to leave that one alone for now. 3. I’m not familiar with that story, but the one referenced in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda is the one I discussed. I would also point out that Loki has all his sins washed away in God of War as well, so I would expect a similar outcome regardless. 4. I never claimed all the Jotnar were evil. They aren’t, but they are the enemies of the gods and humanity. They can do bad things and have (I mentioned a few). The gods can do bad things and have. Humans can do bad things and have. Odin imprisoned Loki’s children to stop the destruction that they would cause and though that may have put them on the path to Ragnarök, not doing this would not have stopped it. Unlike in God of War, fate is not changeable in Norse Mythology. It is set and none can escape it. Ragnarök would have happened regardless. Also I forgot to include this part, but Thor was tempted to kill Hyrrokin (the latter Jotun) because when she pushed Balder’s funeral ship, the rollers caught on fire and the earth shook. The Jotnar are enemies of the Aesir regardless of whether or not they are “good”. Thor’s enemy just made the earth shake and set a fire. That’s enough to put anyone on edge, but again he left her alone. Hope that cleared some things up

At first, I half expected him to have the same form of speech Kratos had; poetic and lyrical (something akin to Shakespeare or typical epic fantasy dialogue.) Instead, I hear him and Odin talking like a couple of Average Joes straight out of the 21st Century; complete with slang

If you want a norse story, Dark Souls reminds me of them, they have the serpent, the Ragnarok the outsiders and more. I actually liked the jewelry. GoWR's Odin is cringe material for sure. Something interesting was your take on the Jotuns, pretty current day writting indeed, that storytelling infantilizing a race is the same problem Rousseau had inherited to Feuerbach and Marx and more, you still see it on Avatar's bad writting and their good savage myth, it is almost like California uses their politics into the culture as some french communists said they should.

He's a weight lifter, he had a boxing match with another weight lifter. But G.o.W's Thor would probably be most what Thor looked like. It's impossible to eat and drink as much as Thor is portrayed to in both Eddas and have washboard abs. LOL. I mean bro kept two immortal goats or cows, I forget which at the moment, that he'd kill an eat bcz when he kept the bones intact they'd regenerate by morning. You're not eating that much and having a 6 pack. 😂😂😂

The comic-book version, in case you mean the actual comics and not the MCU nonsense, is thousands times more accurate to the Eddas and general perception of Thor in Norse Paganism. For starters, much like he was perceived by the Germanic people, in Marvel Comics Thor is the god of common men. When he was not on his godly duties, he would live among men as the healer (Don Blake) and help those in need. Second, he's described as the protector of mankind in the Eddas, and that's pretty much his main motto in Marvel Comics. GoW's Thor let Odin enslave common folk and Thor never showed any care for them. Third, Germanic Thor is a hard-working man who loves his family and children. Marvel's Thor works as hard as hard can get and then comes back home to spend time with his family - including his children, which he has in future or alternate timelines. GoW's Thor is lazy, slothful, whiny, and has no qualms about abusing his children. And then there are more superficial aspects, like GoW's Thor not having Thor's signature belt while Marvel's Thor does. Also stories which never occurred in GoW's universe but did happen in Marvel Comics. Like the story of Loki shaving Sif's hair and Thor making him fix that. The story of Utgard's contest, the story of Thrym's bride, Thor befriending Thalfe (Roskva unfortunately wasn't included in those stories; dunno why), etc.

I liked the Thor character, but they could've done so much more with him and not have him be a companion for a Atreus most of the time, they could've made him like Balder where you could've fought several times and have good fights, but they made him a companion for Atreus and the second Thor fight was so lame and a lot of the fights in the game were mediocre at best. They should've done a 3-part series for the Norse saga where Balder is the first villain in the first game and Thor the second game and Odin the third game. They tried to fit everything in this game, and it came out bland, there's no character development in Thor just that he's big and powerful and has a mighty hammer now we do see some interactions with Sif and Thrud and him trying to be better, but they could've made him similar to Balder where we could have 3 or 4 fights or more instead of 2 which one of the fights is mediocre. If Thor is post to be this mighty warrior god, then they sure made him a coward. The fact that we get epic fights in GOW 2018 and only get mediocre fights in Ragnarök is such a disappointment, they should Honestly redo this game and just make the main villain Thor like balder was in 2018 then make a third game which Odin is the main villain.

Thor Talk, seeing a fat Thor, with an incoherent Norse figure with a lack of details in hand: NO NO NO…. NO!!! AAAUUUUGGGH THIS IS NOT HOW THIS IS SUPPOSED TO GO! (edit) Jokes aside, it’s a fair analysis, and I like this portrayal as well, perhaps one of the more accurate depictions in media, but also being a great character in line of the story and personality. I just wish we got to see his belt and his chariot pulled by goats.

I'm late to the party, but I'm not gonna defend the design by the usual "soyboy" ad nauseam answers of "That's how a REAL STRONKMAN looks" or "IT'S MYTH ACCURATE" (while also defending the physique by saying "There's so few we actually know of those myths" if you decide to hold your grounds a bit), I believe the reason is a bit more copyright-linked. Yes, Marvel didn't created Thor, we know that, but even if you're public domain, the way a certain person created your design is his intellectual property, wich means a studio not dealing with Marvel cannot make Thor blonde muscled up with red cape and winged helmet. A good exhibit A is IDW's Ragnarok : Last God Standing, wich I hope you'll cover someday. In this comic book, Tör is brought back from the Ragnarok a few thousand years afterward to save a young girl from an eternity of suffering, therefore he's a Draugr, wich means he's a skeleton with white hair and the bottom jaw missing (basically Nordic Raziel) plus all-clad in blue and silver, and Mjolnir as sharp edges to be different from Marvel's Mjolnir. And given the man behind that comic is Walter Simonson, he has even more reason to make sure his Thor is not like Marvel's if he wants to avoid problems. You also have a Norwegian film called "Valhalla" in wich Thor has short brown hair and wears beige to brown outfits to look more like the common folk and probably also to avoid a lawsuit. And I believe Sony did this version for the same reason, they're a big company, they work with Marvel, you don't want to end a relationship that gave you a highly profitable video game (Marvel's Spider-Man) because they'd believe you're trying to steal their IP. And also, it creates outrage marketing around that appearance, because "there's no such things as bad publicity".
