God of War Ragnarok's story is bad

Ойындар

God of War Ragnarok's story is just so objectively bad, underwhelming, disappointing that I cant believe people are calling this game a masterpiece or a 10/10. The previous game had a story that was more deserving than this
Correction: 57:00 meant to say Ragnarok
0:00 Rejecting Odins Peace Treaty
6:22 Tyr disguise was pointless
11:05 Prophecy being meaningless
13:30 Prophecy only matters if it helps the good guys

17:57 Loved learning about Asgard
19:25 Odin we see in person is completely different from all the stories mimir and co say
28:01 The Mask just lies to Atreus for no reason
30:00 Fenrir was meaningless (Even though we could've really used his warping abilities earlier)
31:16 Heimdall not seeing the explosion of the Spear
32:36 Odin allowing Heimdall to leave Asgard to begin with, or at the very least leaving the Horn of Gjallarhorn in Asgard
33:55 The Einherjar with the drake not flying away with the moon that Skoll and Hati needed to start Ragnarok
35:30 Contrivances and Coincidences out the gazoo
38:55 Tyrs disguise was pointless part 2
41:07 Odin not doing anything to Surtr before the events of the game
43:00 Atreus is the biggest asshole in the entire Norse Saga BY FAR
44:41 Casually assembling this giant army
46:13 We didnt even need Surtr
47:06 Having character moments during the an actual war
48:24 Sif coincidentally being behind the pillar, having Skjoldr next to her. Contrivances.
50:24 Thor and Odin fights
52:00 Mask was pointless
54:15 God of War 2018 had the better story

You were dead on ! I myself felt a little let down by the game , but I still enjoyed it cause of the combat ! To me there was so much that upset me overall though ! So in a sense I love the game , but I didn’t like the story and I felt the gods didn’t feel like gods ! They tried to hard to make them feel more human , that they didn’t even feel like gods to me ! Now In the original trilogy , those gods feel like gods , but yes they don’t have the deep emotion of the Norse gods in god of war ragnarok ! To me they sacrificed too much of their godhood to make them them more human and relatable , well maybe some like this , I don’t , I wanted Odin to feel like a god ! To me he felt more like a mall store salesman ! But I already expected that once they said they casted Richard schiff as Odin as already seen him in so many movies before ! So I knew what to expect !

I would have liked Ragnarok SO MUCH more if they’d just kept the tone of 2018. 2018 just felt so much more dark and grounded.. obviously it was fantastical because it’s a game about Gods and mythos, but the internal logic and rules of the world were much more consistent than Ragnarok. The thematic elements were of the story were much better executed, and the emotional pay offs were earned. The story of Ragnarok felt like a Marvel movie. This has been said many times and it feels cliche to say, but it’s true. The witty banter, the lightness of the story beats that floated from one rushed section to the next, all of it.. it just felt nothing like 2018. It’s such a shame, because as a game Ragnarok is stellar- the graphical fidelity, animations, art design, music and combat mechanics were amazing. The story held it back so badly. I also think a lot of the main story could have been trimmed and it wouldn’t have suffered at all. Hopefully next time they cut back on the constant attempts at witty banter too.. it just doesn’t work. In the first game, the humor was spread out and thus had a bigger impact. Same with the earned emotional pay offs. Ragnarok is just a mess.

I have to agree, I felt the story was rushed and lack luster, sure it was a great game, but so much potential wasted when literal GODS are fighting like compared to GoW3 how large scale the battles were. Especially in the first game fighting baldur on top of a giant, I had thought we would have fought along with giants in Ragnarok, like when GoW3 Kratos fought Zeus with Gaia. Nope, just grounded weapon clashing. They show so much potential with the beginning of the game, almost teasing bigger and better boss fights...nope no jormungandr pov fight or Kratos and Loki with Fenrir fighting Odin. I'm disappointed that Odin's powers were just wizard spells basically, I thought I would have seen him use much more magic or God powers like duplicating himself to confuse or attack by taking control of a dead giant's body (almost a play on when Freya did that when Kratos and Baldur fought trying to stop fate) or more clashing of both spears. Also...how come Thor gets 2 boss fights with Kratos (beginning and end) but the main big villain gets one boss fight (ending fight)? The boss designs felt lacking the "epic" feeling to me...

I understand that Odin is the great manipulator here, so sure I’ll give him that. Then you have Ragnarok itself, the TITLE! Lasted maybe 40 minutes? This whole game could’ve been so fucking good if they ended right when Kratos blew the horn. Then we could’ve forayed onto the actual Ragnarok in the new game, instead of getting 99 hours of fimbulwinter and 1 of Ragnarok. Then there’s no explanation of why Kratos survives the end of Ragnarok. When majority of the game since right before Garm fight you spend talking about his death. Why did he live? Cus he chose to save those people in Asgard? Because they kept saying that the giants prophecies always come true, so then why did they two contradicting ones with one kratos dying and the other of him being the savior? Only part that came true was the destruction of Asgard. For these reasons, the story was lack-luster. I’m not even going to talk about the action of the game. So, the thing about Odin “not being portrayed as evil” kind of just means you totally fell for his good-guy façade. He uses manipulation tactics to make people *think* he’s fine, when really he’s doing shitty things. For example, with the dwarves; Mimir *specifically states* that Odin was planning on ATTACKING the dwarves as a first result to get them to do what he wanted, and he suggested tricking them instead. How is that NOT evil? Slavery or death? And with the mill, it was also stated he made the mill specifically to make the original mill go out of business, and then he *destroyed his own* to rob the dwarves of their soil. His intent from the beginning was malicious. It’s as they say, “even if he speaks the truth, his purpose is false.” He does good things for bad reasons, and I thought it’d be more obvious than that.

  • @RealFastus

He is a bad guy and has done bad things but is he evil? The actions and what he says during the fight with Kratos and when Atreus breaks the mask, isn't that an example of him doing bad things for what he thought was a right cause? He thought the knowledge from the rift would solve all the problems they had, including Ragnarok. He says: "Unfold the secrets of life and death." He didn't even care that he wasn't the one getting that knowledge and that Atreus was instead, all he wanted was for that knowledge to be discovered, no matter by whom. The thing about him being someone who did bad thing for what he thought were gonna be good outcomes, basically he thinks the ends justify the means, is stated by something else he says at the end of the game: "What was it all for?" All the suffering and destruction made in order to make the mask whole, the whole long plan brought about by the prophecies with Loki, it was all for nothing since Atreus destroyed the mask. I think it is a very bad choice to trust everything that Odin says, but I also think it is equally as bad of a choice to distrust everything he says.

The problem I have is that the only things he does which can actually be considered bad are things we never get to see, and are just things being told by 1 side of a 2 sided conflict, who has an obvious axe to grind against the other side. Like if Guy A just states that Guy B is going to do Evil Act X, but the only proof we have is just that Guy A said it, even though he has been shown to be truthworthy, I still wouldnt go to war against Guy B simply because of the words of Guy A. Im going to need a whole lot more than that. Like if we ever got to hear Odins response to those accusations, then this wouldnt even be a debate to begin with, since then we could determine right then and there what the answer was, depending on how he responded. But considering how Mimir and the games Codex logs try to treat things that wouldnt even be considered evil in a modern context, I cant just blindly take anything Mimir says as Gospel without something more. Granted if you put a gun to my head and told me between Mimir and Odin which one probably has been telling the truth more often than the other, then sure Id go with Mimir since he has no reason to lie to us. But that alone would never be enough of a justification to start a war with the other side. And in regards to your Mill point. I dont care about what the intentions are of people. I care about their actions because actions speak louder than words. If Person A had the best intentions but the worst results (Results in this case meaning using force on somebody else) and Person B had the worst intentions but the best results (Results in this case meaning NOT using force on somebody else, aka peace) then I would choose Person B anytime of the week. The bottom line is that all Odin did in this example was start up a competing business, which the fellow Dwarves could still ignore if they wished to, but they voluntarily chose not to, so as a result Durins World Mill went out of business and fell apart. Thats not evil. Thats exactly what would happen in our own modern context. Odin then destroying his own World Mill is also not evil because its his property to begin with. Like I know my video and my reply to this comment probably makes it seem Im an Odin stan. Im not trying to say the guy is just completely misunderstood or something. He could very well be the most evil SOB in all God of War games for all I know. Its just everything we see of him, even in contexts where he doesnt need to put up a facade, are all at complete opposite ends of all the atrocities that are attached to him through off screen happenings. The Odin I was scared of and terrified of meeting based on all descriptions of him in God of War 2018, didnt seem to appear at all in God of War Ragnarok. I really, truly am not trying to say Odin is a good dude. Im sure Word of God would back up all evil shit hes done. Its just if I take Odin strictly from on screen showings of God of War Ragnarok. Then hes just the leader of Asgard who offered a peace deal to Kratos, who was then rejected, essentially having war declared on him, thereby justifying any negative thing he did to Kratos and company in self defense essentially. I wanted to see the evil Odin, but all I got was a guy didnt live up to the hype

He killed his son, yes, but he said he didn't want it, it's a bad thing but it's not like he got some kind of pleasure from it, I wouldn't call it evil. As for the Kratos and knowledge thing, we simply don't know, there is no reason to think Odin would have done anything bad after accomplishing his goals. Logically speaking, if everything bad he has ever done was in the service of getting the rift knowledge, then after getting it, he should have no reason to do anything else that's bad. He clearly cares more about that knowledge being discovered no matter by whom than just wanting to get his hands on it personally, that is why at the end he says to Atreus that he's the one destined to peer into the rift, and Atreus could have either not told him anything or even just killed Odin after, this is a game after all, and knowledge even above that of the gods would grant you power. Also, Odin wants to know what is after death, sure, but I doubt that the rift only holds that information. Plus, if every god knew for a fact what happened to them after they die, I imagine the way they conduct themselves would change. Odin is a complex character, that is why he is interesting, yet the people who praise his seem to ignore this, strangely, and simply categorize his as evil, nothing more.

Thanks for keeping me honest If I can still attempt to shamelessly defend myself, I do think there is a difference between having it forced upon themself like Baldur was, as opposed to Odin willingly wanting to learn it. But thats just kinda a cop out on my part to a degree. Thanks again Edit: Making this edit on 1/16/23, about a month later from initial comment. Actually, on thinking about this some more based from another commenter here "Hectic 117", I think I may take back my initial concession here. Because assuming that was Freya's reason, of not wanting Odin to become insane, then I have to question why didnt she just remove that from Baldur then? If she valued someones sanity more than she valued everlasting life, why didnt she remove it from Baldur? If she valued everlasting life more than sanity, why didnt she teach it to Odin? The Tyr reveal was so promising, really made me think "oh wow, this odin guy is seriously clever, he played everyone, I can't wait to see what other deceptions he has planned". Hell, when Kratos and Artreus start preparing their army for ragnarok, they even point out how "this seems too easy", which really seemed like the game was building up another plot twist where Odin was manipulating the gang into doing exactly what he needed them to do which would lead to Kratos getting killed and asgard surviving Ragnarok. But no, apparently Odin really didn't have any backup plan in case crosdressing as a giant didn't work. The gang somehow unites 8 realms within like a day, and Odin has no strategy aside from throwing Thor and a couple einherjar at the army attacking asgard. And of course Kratos survives and gets a perfect good guy marvel movie ending because "blah blah, generic we make our own fate dialogue", basically nobody of importance from the good guy side dies aside from Brok, and Odin genuinely turns out to be just an idiot who didn't have any kind of plan and gets beat in an incredibly underwhelming bossfight. Seriously, Zeus could take on all these wimpy Norse gods at the same time and would still win.

About Heimdall vs. Draupnir: I don't have a good answer for this, but I think the game is *trying* to suggest that the replication of Draupnir is essentially random, i.e. "sometimes it makes copies of itself" or whatever Brok says about it. I think the idea is that even though Heimdall can read the minds of men, he can't precisely predict the replication of Draupnir. This isn't a perfect explanation because we're shown that Kratos has essentially total control over the replication and detonation.

I think the biggest problem with the games story is that it introduces so many ideas that end up being kinda half baked. A good example is how quickly Freyas quest for revenge against Kratos gets dropped as a plot point in favor of spending more time having her as an ally. Given how much weight her anger against Kratos was given at the end of the first game, you could have made a whole sequel around that concept before delving into Ragnarok. The first game actually benefited a lot narratively by showing restraint in the amount of the nine realms the player was able to see and the characters they met along the way. I think Santa Monica studios kinda jumped the gun, maybe making this Norse saga a Trilogy would have helped alleviate the issue somewhat.

Damn, I don't agree with you. I have studied this game's story extensively and all I can say is that you are vastly misinformed if that is all you have to say. Freya's revenge isn't dropped, it's expanded upon, heck she even leads Ragnarok because of it. First of all, Kratos and Freya don't just spend time with each other to become allies, they spend time with each other because they are written to be parallels. Freya's declaration of vengeance is supposed to mirror Kratos' declaration of vengeance. Both swears revenge upon the death of their child(and wife for Kratos), yet both ultimately just want to grieve. Kratos wanted to forget, while Freya just wanted for her to be with her son. This is important because Kratos UNDERSTANDS this, he knows that Freya is a mother, a leader, and a friend. He knows that deep in her heart she is kind, caring, compassionate, and dignified. Freya's wounds were just fresh, that's why she was so hell bent on lashing out. Second reason, Kratos isn't the only person that convinces her to stop her vengeance for Kratos. It took Atreus(someone she deeply cares about and by the end of the game treats as a son of her own), Mimir, Brok(He is relavant because he is someone that also understood what Freya was going through when going through Vanaheim), Freyr, and Kratos himself. With her allies, she was able to focus on the only person deserving of her hatred, Odin. That brings me to the last, Odin became the target for her vengeance. Odin has been the cause of everything, but that's not the only thing that matters. Throughout the climax of the story and on going theme is the fact that they do not do this because of vengeance, but for justice. To free the nine realms and punish Odin for his crimes. Freya going after vengeance isn't just supposed to be about vengeance, but justice.

However, for the older fans who went through how mamy games with Kratos, we felt betrayed cause this wasn't the Kratos we knew or remembered. We have no way of seeing how he became this either, like if 2015 would've been a game of Kratos meeting Faye and her bringing him back to being more "human" again then I would've enjoyed it. But to me atrieus doesn't come close to being Kratoses kid, like they aren't similar. Also your telling me Kratos wouldn't have had any father talks with atriues prior to the games? When we saw how he cared for his daughter yet had to turn away from her ? To me these stories were just meh and bland. The new characters weren't great or interesting really. Then there's the combat, jumping and platforming I missed so much from the first set of games. This one's combat was cool and neat, but not what original fans came to enjoy and thoroughly love. The puzzles were basic as shit, and no platform.issues at all without a screeching child or women helping you. Sad what it's been reduced to.

I was waiting for the moment thrud found out about atreus stabbing modi to death but it's never mentioned again. There's gotta be another plan for these characters in the beggining that was thrown out. Is it a better plot plan than what they presented in ragnarok? We may never know.

The mask should of been dropped as a plot point and should of been Athena instead. Athena should of gone to Odin after the events in 2018. To give insight into Kratos and the other pantheons around. Later in Ragnarok Odin would show Athena to Atreus where the full extent of Kratos’ history is told to Atreus. Further pushing that prophecy to reality and causes discourse within him. Athena true motives are she doesn’t want another God ascending to her level of existence. So she is trying to ensure another Pantheon dies to limit that. She would dress it up as just a hatred for Kratos. When really her pawn is Kratos and her plan is just to use him for the monster he is to kill more and more gods. Cory wanted that originally for Athena to represent the idea of her becoming monotheistic faith. This could of been an easier lead up to God of War 6. Where Athena has abandoned the Norse pantheon after losing to Kratos once again. So she’s flees and seeks the help of other Pantheons, warning them of the power of Kratos and now the nine realms.

Try in some way, in a moment of anger between Kratos and Atreus to bring them apart and make Kratos have to come clean to his son about the sins of his past. That never got explored, we never really feel that Atreus might go to Odin and betray his father, it never felt the profecy could ever become true.

It makes no sense for this to be a main plot point in the game, the whole point of finishing of Norse is to give the weight of the villain role to the the most hyped villains Thor and Odin, from all the horrible deeds they committed. And the story does a masterful job of slowly separating the two to see who is willing to change and who isn't. The entire schtick about prophecy and the giants wouldn't make any sense. Having Athena as a main line villain, over Odin is actually the dumbest thing I've heard. I think you should just admit the masterful character synergy and Interactions weren't valuable to you and you wanted to see a plot that rivalled gow3 in scale, and built a huge hype train where kratos revealed his true self again and killed the pantheon mercilessly. Sure the scale was toned down for the ending and final surtr could've be better utilised, but the development and intentions of characters has been excellently crafted into a long windy voyage that ultimately ended into a new kratos, and a new motivation for Atreus. The most impactful ending (apart from a well crafted death or something).

When Odin couldn't Manipulate Kratos, he shifts his focus to Atreus, who can be manipulated, so he was prepared for Kratos to say no right from the jump, but so long as Kratos stays alive, it doesn't give Atreus further reason to oppose Odin. The Tyr disguise was actually brilliant because he distracts everyone by playing to their good natures and when he preached peace, Odin is someone who can only be stopped by violence, so if he convinced them to not destroy Asgard and Odin with it, he would have succeeded. He's a villain who conquers through knowledge, but his flaw is that, with all he controls in the realms, he can't control himself.

As a master manipulator you can't act on instinct, otherwise you aren't a master manipulator. Also, you didn't address the points made in the video, why couldn't he maintain his calm and smooth talk his way out of it, since Brock was the only one suspecting him and he's not the brightest one around so he would be more easily tricked and manipulated, while the others would also fall easily since we know they already did. For example, he could have said that he calls Atreus, Loki, because he thought he ran away trying to find some semblance of independence from his father, or anything else, this is just a quick example off the top of my head. Odin suffers from what I call "Trump syndrome", where people like to attribute to them 2 opposing characteristics and see no problem with it. I use Trump because people like to say that he is a evil mastermind and in the same breath would say how dumb he is. I agree that kratos has 100% justifiable reason to automatically distrust any God he sees. Ill never fault him for that. Its just that in this very specific context. Declining the peace offering essentially means he wants to go to War with Odin. That brings immediate conflict that jeopardizes his and his sons life right then and there. I figured Kratos would have enough guile to just agree to it, then plan for future actions later if needed. But the bottom line is that as a result of not accepting the deal, that immediately made Odin have Thor attack Kratos, which got him and Atreus separated and Kratos knocked out/killed. If it wasnt for the plot, Kratos would've ruined his family. He had no way of knowing that Atreus would still be alive. He essentially just declared war right then and there and got saved by plot. Like if this was a magical binding contract that Kratos was being forced to adhere to, then yeah 100% deny that because you know Odin did some magical fuckery on it. But in this case it was just 2 old dudes having a talk, which both can just lie and agree to, then next day betray each other if they wanted. Basically there was 0 downside to accepting Odins deal, which Kratos could back out at any point in time. However there was a multitude of risks denying the deal, with Kratos found out immediately

He isn’t going to accept a deal that endangers Freya, he really doesn’t want to kill her. @Owain Glyndŵr, last prince of Wales It's pretty obvious that conflict would arise once Kratos said no to their peace deal. I immediate thought Kratos saying "no" would lead to Thor attacking him, which it did. Odin added in dealing with Freya to enrich the peace deal for Kratos. It was not a necessary part of it. Kratos could have easily said yes but don't kill Freya. Odin has let Freya live all this time. It makes no sense to believe that Odin wouldn't make the deal without killing Freya for Kratos. 😅 Kratos was ready to attack them and on edge the whole conversation. You'll even see him reach for his axe as Odin reached out to Atreus. So Kratos clearly knew violence could spring from the conversation at any moment, so he was prepared to fight when he plainly said no to their peace deal. He could have said he'll think about it but Freya is off limits just to get them to leave and come back later and try to deescalate the situation. Also, why did Kratos hold back to the point where Thor killed/knocked him out? They could have kidnapped, hurt or kill Atreus for all he knew. He overestimated his ability to protect Atreus if things went bad. It's a good thing Thor and Odin didn't want to kill them.

Also, Odin does indeed pop back into Sindri’s home several times while Atreus is in Asgard. There are even instances where Odin just straight up teleports (supposedly) out of Asgard. Imagine they go to the Japanese pantheon and they don’t sound like they’re from Japan lmaoo. If this is life changing story or the genre defining story these fans claims it is gaming truly has reached an all time low. I guess you just aren’t allowed to have issues with this game and it’s story I guess. Can’t call it ragnarok when the only two fights in it are dark souls rip offs with qte’s you can’t even fail excluding how quick the “ragnarok” was with rarely any Aesir gods in Asgard. One of the most iconic apocalyptic events in all of mythology/fiction wasn’t done any form of justice and yes I’m aware of video game limitations. Odin killing Thor was ridiculous and didn’t come off as the parallel to Kratos & Atreus as they thought it would. 2018’s portrayal of these two “Aesir conquerors throughout the 9 realms” on literal boat rides felt more intimidating and more like a threat than what we received. What supports my point on this is that nobody praises them as video game bosses/antagonists (which both Odin & Thor are incompetent as) they praise them as “characters”. A lot of stuff from 2018 wasn’t even present in this game which makes me believe the original idea for the story got scrapped. The whole ending was a mess from start to finish man. I’ve read every GOW comic, novel and have played every game even the mobile game years ago to say I’m a fan of the franchise is a bit of a lowball. This game & story is festered with issues. It tries to do too much all in this one game and it falls flat on its face. A difference in directorial presence and narration should never scream this loud in a piece of media. Three months before release even devs on the team said the game was mid, even one of the devs on her YT channel said the story was trash. The giants prophecy & the Norns both said Kratos would die obviously I knew he wouldn’t but to “be better” you would think something grandiose would happen to defy fate but nothing happens and no catharsis is felt. When we are having emotional bate moments within an apocalyptic war the tension feels non existent and nobody important died. Brok isn’t important man imma just be honest this is further supported due to the fact on how fast someone replaces him(Lunda) and there is legit no dire consequences for his death. I play these new GOW games for the story because the gameplay is subpar at best and filled with homogenized AAA trends so when it fails at its one job it gives the most importance I don’t know why your shocked to see people call it out. As a passionate GOW fan if we aren’t going to kill gods for the sake of “being better” pack the franchise up Kratos’ kill count is legit a 15 digit number and that’s solely for Greece now they want to tread a line like he’s this wise old man now. Instead of taking inspiration from the last of us words from word of god Cory Barlog himself maybe take inspiration from Vinland Saga,Vagabond,Berserk if you want to actually attempt at diving into Kratos’ psyche after the events of GOW III. Whoever green lit Sindri killing Odin needs to be fired with all due respect it’s not good writing at all😭🤦🏾‍♂️ Easily the second worst game in the franchise if not the worst at least Ascension was a better game and didn’t have walk and talk segments that bloat the gameplay for more than 15mins. An atreus spin off seems like an option Santa Monica might take and if they do this franchise has not only lost its identity but they have their heads up their a** if they think it will sell good with him as a main lead. His segments in this game were beyond atrocious and they screwed the pacing up. Gow is one of my favorite series of all time but it’s not free from criticism at all and I am genuinely worried for the future of this franchise. These new GOW games are for the mass appeal that like nice graphics and not for GOW fans.

If there is one master manipulator in this game, that is Faye. She was so spiteful that the giants got their ahhes handed to them by the Aesir, that she made a broken stray Greek god of destruction fall in love with her and a have a son together, and brainwashed both of them to go into a vengeful spiral of slaughtering anything between them and Odin until they get him too. It would be much better without Faye and Atreus in the plot. Just Kratos settling in a Midgard village and seeing it destroyed in a random conflict between Aesir and Jotunn, then going berserk as usual and obliterating everyone. Simple and effective. But what we got was a dude that slaughtered random elves in their own realm just to get to a painting while he could just ASK them, because they actually talk.

Mask lead him to Garm maybe because its magic ability teleports have same colour as mask and rift, so it could be same type of magic energy. It was the only time mask lead him wrong because it could have been simply detecting strongest source of this type magic in the realm (so usually mask fragment) ,but in this realm there was no mask fragment, so it detected Garm, because it was the strongest source of that green magic. In regards to the Jotnar, I was under the assumption that because the Giants essentially created the prophecy of Ragnarok, which would destroy Odin and the rest of the Aesir, he wiped them out as a result. Meaning he was just handed a death sentence by the Giants as a result of prophecy, so either wanted revenge for that, or to prevent any more prophecies from happening. Assuming if they were at war even before that, then its just Odin won the war then. Dont know what the very first source of conflict between the 2 was. For Vanaheim, I assumed it was because they were already at War beforehand. Then Odin eventually won. Sadly dont know what the original source of conflict was. Maybe I missed something. Heh, Ill admit, I didnt really care too much about Birgir, so I think I just completely forgot about him since I didnt care too much about him. But yeah after you bringing it up, Freya and Beyla could fly yet didnt even bother to do anything. And Birgir had to get super lucky to flydrive the wyvern into the other one. Like I could maybe believe just stabbing 1 and taking it out with himself, but not coincidentally flying into the other wyvern as well. Funny you brought that up!

His threat to Freya made this impossible. She may persist as a danger, but to ally against her with her former husband is...unacceptable" That main point of Kratos declining the offer was due to Freya being invoked. If that whole section talking about Freya wasnt included in there, then I would be more inclined to agree. But even if that wasnt included. The bottom line is that if Person A comes up to Person B and asks for Peace. If Person B declines right then and there, there is only 1 interpretation that can come of it. Person B wants War. I dont see how there was a single negative that could've resulted from Kratos accepted the Peace Deal from Odin (Providing Kratos says dont hurt Freya" because 1. Its not a magical binding contract. There is nothing for Kratos to fear here. If he agrees there isnt some sort of forced compulsion that gets twisted for Odins benefit or something. 2. Even if you agree just to bullshit him, it at least gets Odin and Thor away. Like there was only the potential for something positive by accepting this. There was no negative that could come from this, that wasnt already just demonstrated by declining the offer to begin with. At worst, accepting the deal would lead to the same result. At best it would've avoided the fight with Thor to begin with and not get separated from Atreus. No matter which angle you approach this from. With the information that Kratos had at the time and nothing else in the future, this was the worst decision he could've made

Odin himself said it best here: "Between my Ex-Wife and my former disgruntled employee, he is not getting exact an unbiased picture of me". There Kratos heard nothing good coming from Odin and knows how treacherous he is, making any deals with Odin off. Also Kratos declining makes sense with his character, he was betrayed by gods time and time again and knows that they cannot be trusted. Had Kratos taken the deal, it would allow Odin to manipulate Atreus now that they made peace and it would ruin any chance of reconciliation with Freya, because her old friends now made peace with her sworn enemy. When Odin inadvertently betrays them, they won't have any allies anymore, because all of Kratos's friends would criticize him for taking Odin's deal and that would be considered treachery. He knows that Odin would not accept a dismissal without grave consequences, Kratos couldn't even deal with Thor on his own due to holding back. Imagine going against both gods. Because of this, Kratos would be wise to barter and come with a compromise with Odin so that he can avoid potentially getting his son killed or kidnapped. It is because of the plot that when Thor distracted Kratos while Atreus was alone with Odin, he wasn't kidnapped, killed, or cursed by Odin to not visit other realms in order to stop him form finding Tyr like he did with Freya.

I think its due to whatever god of war 2018 had that most "god of war fans" wanted more of, didnt get in sacrifice for its story but still staying VERY faithful. Ragnarok was made to listen to all these nitpicks and "cretiques" of how the games "werent like the old games" when the whole reason for this change was because the serires was becoming repetitive. Ragnarok fixed all these changes that would appeal to those audiences to enjoy. Which HEAVILY impacted the quality of the story, that was such a driving force in....all the God of war games before it. Needless to say Ragnarok appeals to its fans, which destroyes the game in its entirety. He says in Ragnarök that he thinks it's pointless and a dead end, you wouldn't bring something up that you thought was completely pointless and a dead end, he didn't actually make much progress through his life until atreus came with his god powers of language

Of course it’s bad once I heard this was the last game in Norse mythology and you still have so many characters to flush out but instead you squeeze them in one game that’s when I knew this game’s story was gonna be hilarious. Waiting all this time for the battle with Thor at the door they made him a walking simulator throwing Mjolnir at walls instead of Kratos. 🤣 You can’t get any worse than that in my opinion. I’m a mythology buff and I was completely disappointed in this games story and don’t even get me started on Helheim. 👀👀👀

I will never understand how kratos actually beat heimdall, shouldn't heimdall be able to predict the future? Even if kratos stopped thinking so he couldn't mind read him he can still use his foresight power he is the god of fucking foresight, and even with the spear's infinite copies it still doesn't make sense he can still foresee it and simply dash towards kratos and punch him before he detonates the spears

The overall problem I have with this game is that it treats itself like a triple A blockbuster movie with annoying mcu banter between the characters. Or it’ll take scenes and affects from mcu like when Sindhi snatches the marble from Atreus. Also the cutscenes in this game are actually to frequent, I feel like there is almost more cinematically than gameplay while the 2018 game is mostly cutscene heavy in the very beginning. Furthermore the game throws all of these different plots like the mask and angroboda’s collection of prophecies, but they all turn out to be useless and are incorporated into the story to keep players busy. The whole time the prophecies are treated as something inevitable and that kratos was going to die, I remember angroboda assuring Atreus that the prophecy WOULD come true, and it all turned out to be a bunch of bs.

I simply will not tolerate this Odin apologist propaganda lmao Regarding the prophecy, Kratos was to die at Thor’s hand and the moment that he put his axe away after letting Thor stand up in order to relate to the part of Thor that wants to be a good father was the moment that he averted the prophecy. He was never in danger of dying the whole game because he was supposed to die at the end… Regarding Fenrir, how was he useless if he was literally their only way of escaping ragnarok? I agree the pacing was a bit off towards the last act of the game and I agree with a lot of your qualms about the pacing stuff but it’s clear you don’t understand the story and that’s what is frustrating you

Game is called 'Ragnarok' but the actual Ragnarok lasts 30 mins tops. A 'war' that ends like Endgame with a happy ending where the heroes suffer no real losses. We spend 5x that time riding a fucking yak... ridiculously overrated game. Edit: hahahaha you mentioned the same thing. It absolutely is the most glaring flaw in the entire game.

The fact you just said kratos stands no chance against Thor and Odin together shows how little you know about kratos. He’s been holding back the whole game, if anything, a plot hole you coulda talked about was how if kratos didn’t hold back, he coulda easily solo’d everyone. Kratos is strong enough to take them both on for sure. I don’t disagree with you tho, this game was a disaster

  • @reallargefungus4555

I feel like we understood the "prophecy" side of things differently, as I played through the game I saw Kratos trying to defy prophecy many times, such as him wanting to desperately avoid a war and doing his best to not kill Heimdall, but ultimately both these things are done because he has no choice the prophecy still lined up. So I dont think that prophecy is just "ignored" when convenient but rather the ultimate reveal at the end of their prophecies endings being rewritten/ destroyed simply allows them to continue their story via their own free will.

Also about the dwarves, they didn’t have a choice in the matter not really. Mimir explained it as a choice between working and death, implying that Odin simply would have killed the dwarves if they didn’t work for him. On top of this the dwarves did yes set up the rigs but mimir created the idea and then effectively made them do it for more recourses quicker
