    "You have always been more than what others saw." This isn't just Kratos having a moment of self-reflection. It's the developers telling the people that hated Kratos back in the day that there was always more to him than a big dumb brute. They just refused to see it. Kratos has had an incredible journey from angry and vengeful man into a wise and respected man. Kratos is both of these, but none of them defines him. He decides his own fate.

    The "final battle" mirrors that one fight Young Kratos had with his even Younger self, but with different tone and solution. Old Kratos had forgiven himself, forgiven the God killer that is his Younger self, and it is actually quite in character, Zeus wronged him, but the pantheon couldn't help but stand in Kratos' way instead of being of use to him. We saw that he bear no ill will towards Athena, saddened by her death even. Old Kratos let his Younger self live somewhat, with a glimmer of hope, to turn for the better.

  • @screenname6829

    @screenname6829

    The violence was a means to an end. Ares tricked Kratos into killing his own family. Then he was betrayed by the gods for essentially doing what they told him. You wanted to see kratos get his revenge for the shit they put him through so no not really. Besides the whole quest for revenge is based on lost love. He’s strong but not enough to defeat Odin. Nobody is strong enough to defeat Odin alone, which is why only the prophecy of Ragnarok, where all the armies unite and Surtr destroys Asgard, is where Odin dies. So Odin wanted Tyr gone because: 1) Tyr is fabled to unite the armies of all the realms to fight at Ragnarok. By locking him up, Odin thought he could prevent this from ever happening and prevent Ragnarok entirely. Little did he know Kratos would unite and lead the armies instead, and Kratos is an even better general than Tyr. 2) Odin knew of Atreus’ desire to find Tyr and the faith Atreus had in him, so Odin knew he could use a disguise of Tyr to infiltrate Kratos’ camp and learn of their plans, because Atreus and Kratos would trust him as “Tyr”. Of course, when he gathered as much information as he needed to stop their plans, he revealed himself as Odin.

    Rewatching this, watching Young Kratos's body language react to everything Old Kratos says. There's a saying that comes to mind, one that seems to almost be intentional with how Kratos seems to be fond of his packbeasts and the various wolves of the Nine Realms. "Inside of you are two wolves, locked in an endless struggle. The winner is the one you feed." The more aggressive, angry, confrontational Old Kratos gets, the more arrogant and... PROUD Young Kratos starts to be. Instead of a bored slump, he draws himself up in slow, languid movements. He blinks. His eyes shift from just staring ahead to staring directly at Kratos moments before the anger of the old man hits a fever pitch. "There is no forgiving you! YOU CHOSE--" It's just the most subtle of movements here. The way the corner of his mouth turns up. It could be a sneer of contempt at being lectured, but that sneer doesn't fit the analogy on display. The message. No, it's a mirthless, blood-chilling smirk. Yes. Young Kratos made every choice of his own agency. Gods and legends fell in scores in that bloody, vengeful conquest. A pantheon died. An entire civilization collapses on itself. And at the end of the day, Young Kratos loved every second of it. It was everything a Spartan like him was raised for. Trained for. Bled for. Died for, again and again. It is the only part of his past life that Old Kratos does not seem to have any malice or hatred towards. There is pride in his Spartan heritage, on display in how he acts, how he talks, even the very name of his son. The camera pans away. Old Kratos, humbled and shocked, breathlessly whispers out. "I... chose." Young Kratos dissipates from the scene. Old Kratos, faced with the prospect of his impending enlightenment, grows increasingly disgusted over the responsibility before him. The light is behind him, accenting his ashen skin in the shadows. In this final minute, he is Young Kratos once more. The Ghost of Sparta, rejecting out of impulse the choice before him. He turns once more, and with the light fully over Kratos the last vestiges of the Ghost of Sparta fade away into nothing as his skin looks normal in the bright, warm light. He sits. Kratos told the story of his youth in the Agoge, where children were taken from their parents and trained for a militant, jingoistic dogma. Every night, Kratos would have to make his way home with no escort, or he would become food for wolves (another, more abstract nod to the saying above). For centuries, Kratos wandered Greece and the Nine Realms alone, unloved, in the cold dark. He sits upon the eroded throne, the sensation of godly acceptance feeling so overwhelming to him that he is quietly gasping for breath and fighting back tears. His eyes close. "I believe... I would like to sit here for awhile." Kratos finally found his way home. He chose which wolf to feed.

    Not even just an empty throne - a tattered and broken one. The banner that once resided over the left became no more because the senseless war in Kratos is finally over. For it to become a solemn seat of authority, not for war or command, but for one man who accepts his past and continues the path is such a subtle change.

    I just finished the main storyline today and I actually had wet eyes throughout this scene. I never played the previous God of War games before 2018, and yet Christopher Judge’s performance and everyone involved in the scene’s crafting did such an AMAZING job at hitting the emotional notes.

A large club-like weapon with one great thing of note, an inserted line of OBSIDIAN, broken shards of volcanic glass, that served as the blade. Know for its weight and jagged edge, it was referred to as, on Deadliest Warrior, as an OBSIDIAN CHAINSAW!

    What a ending. I get and agree that it feels a bit weird that theres wasnt a young kratos fight. But it would probably defeat the purpose of valhalla. Its about self reflection. Young kratos is the embodiment of rage and violence. Defeating him would mean to be more violent and him still hating himself

    In a werid way, Kratos seems to becoming someone who knows how to ripped up the status ques but yet also inspires hope for people to rebuild something better when it wasn't possible before. Kratos got rid of a toxic pantheon aka the greek gods (Like let's face it would the gods let humanity advance beyond them?) and now in the Norse world; Kratos helped everyone remove Odin ending his plans for good while everyone makes something beyond the control of the old for better or worse.

    Not going lie, I've seen the thumbnail and I avoided the spoilers, but now that I finally beat the beat the DLC, the ending was still pretty amazing of course but it wasn't what I expected. I had hoped by some miracle, we would get a special guest appearance from T.C Carson (OG Kratos) and he'd have a conversation with current Kratos and that he would be the final boss🔥🔥🔥. I swear history would have been MADE if both voices of Kratos were in the same room. But I still accepted the ending and I was excited that Kratos could finally find forgiveness and peace within himself that he truly deserved 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
