He's probably upset because he's trying not to kill Heimdall, even though he probably wants to punch the life out of this proud-for-no-reason a**hole. He's trying to be a better person, and a good person won't kill other people if not for self-defense. That's why he spared him by the end of round 1. But Heimdall is a self-righteous, cowardly wretch who can only guarantee his victory if he fights against children, like Atreus or Thrud. He couldn't let someone do this to his fragile ego and decided to throw his life away for a non-existing chance of victory against a true god.

When you realize that when Heimdall said "Monster" he wasn't calling him one, he was stating what he saw. He truly was the only being in Norse Mythology to actually see who and what the Ghost of Sparta was. The rest heard downplayed stories but Heimdall actually SAW young Kratos slaughtering the whole Greek pantheon as well as his own family, he truly saw a monster.

I also think Heimdall called him that because Kratos doesn’t want to revert to his old ways by ruthlessly murdering gods like a monster, but here he has no choice as he wants it protect his son. One thing I noticed while rewatching this is that the fight doesn't end with the player pressing R3 to do a finisher like you normally would, Kratos delivers the final blows all on his own. That's a really cool and subtle way to show how Kratos loses control in the heat of the moment and it makes the realization of what he's done hit even harder in the end

Interesting inversion of the end of the God of War 3 where the fight only ends when the player stops mashing the button to beat up Zeus which was also a way of showing how he was out of control. Like in that game it was to show how Kratos was fully responsible for his actions, but now in contrast he's basically on autopilot in his anger. Which kind of makes sense given that he's gotten old and become wiser but the whole god killing thing has just become routine for him at this point.

Heimdall called Kratos a monster because when he looked into Krato’s eyes before dying (how he reads minds,) he saw Kratos’ old memories of killing the greek gods and what he did to Olympus. You can tell Kratos was thinking about these memories while choking Heimdall due to his face. Heimdall just so happened to witness all of it before he died, thus why he called him a monster.

I love the moment when kratos is throwing punches at Heimdall. He goes slow at first throwing absolute haymakers just to test out the speed, second time a little faster, tighter punches and eventually makes contact on the bracer with the left hook. Then the third time he just volume punches at high speed throwing a 6 punch combination and is able to predict Heimdall’s dodge before he makes it but finally catching him with a right overhand. So bad ass and such a great visual representation showing how kratos breaks down his enemies and their fighting styles. He’s not a mindless warrior, he is rather intelligent and uses it silently in battle.

In another video I saw another comment who made an analysis of the fight and what Kratos did was just so impressive. The summary of it was that Kratos repeated the same combo 3 times. The first was to test his skill and how powerful was Heimdal’s insight. The second was to see how well trained Heimdal was with his ability, Kratos repeated the combo just faster. If heimdal had perfected the ability he would’ve blocked the entire combo but he hit his braces realizing that heimdal never practiced to perfect the ability. The final one was to land the hit. Realizing that Heimdal never practiced and used his power as a crutch he repeated the combo a final time tricking him and grabbing his arm to land a hit he never expected, confusing him and with it winning the fight from that point. Santa Monica studios definitely outdid themselves, the Nordic saga is just wonderfully made

Heimdall might be able to read Kratos' attacks, but just because you know you'll face an onslaught of brutal, overpowering strikes doesn't mean you can consistently defend against them, especially when your opponent is an experienced war god with anger management issues and twice as much muscle mass as you. He saw Kratos killing Baldur, Magni, Poseidon, Hermes, Helios, Hades, Ares, The Sisters of Fate, Thanatos, Persephone, Hercules, Perseus, Hera, Cronos, Hephaestus, Perses (Titan), Gaia, The Furies, Icarus, Charon, Theseus, Athena, Zeus, Callisto and his family. It is normal why it is like that, remember this: Almost all gods and best example norse gods are born into a godly family were everyone is beneath them and much, much weaker. So they never needed to really learn to fight, loose, needing to really fight hard in a fight, do strategy etc. and all while their whole childhood is doing nothing and your family telling you how great you are and a god and you literally just do what thor does, drinking beer and that's it. And IF there is some problem you just go and beat it in 5 seconds without any need to really hit hard.

This depiction of Heimdall is top notch. People seem to think that his ego and abrasiveness are insufferable, but we're talking about a God who can see right into your mind and true intentions. He knew Kratos and Loki would bring nothing but ruin to the Aesirs, yet his warnings were ignored. He has every right to be both smug and hostile. A world ending prophecy where he and everyone he's associated with is going to die is about to come true, and he can clearly see who's going to be responsible for it. You really won't find a better gate guard than him. Mind you, he even knew when Atrues was climbing the wall and when the boy was going to slip. He's not a fool at all.

Some people says ''why all of a sudden after the first strike Heimdall can be hit by normal attack after'' . Imagine you've been living literally thousands of years, been part of hundreds of fights, and never once you ever got hit by anything what so ever. You come into this fight with full confidence because you can't see how this would go any different than all of the previous, but then this time, for the first time, you get punched in the face 1 min into it, by no less than another god who killed a dozen of gods before you. Your confidence vanishes, confusion and fear starts to take the spot left by confidence. What you've been doing all your life will not work here, and you know it. The damage is done, the mind is shattered and overwhelmed with questions, stress and fear. Your senses are overwhelmed. A nice touch is that from this first strike on, you can use the axe and blade just fine for the rest of the fight. His mind has been taken out, the inevitable awaits.

It's fine to think it's a masterpiece. I think the previous GoW was better personally. A lot of it has to do with how disappointing Odin was as a villain and how rushed the game felt in terms of pacing. GoW 4 spent a LOT of time talking up how scary and crazy Odin was and how he was watching everybody's every move and he had all these plans in store, and then we get to this game after expecting him to be this big foreboding badass, and he's mostly just an insane, frail old man (he literally looks like my grandfather walking out of a pub) who does a lot of scheming and undermining. We get a boss fight with him and idk, it felt reaaaaallly easy compared to everything else the game had to offer, and this is supposed to be the alleged HEAD of the norse pantheon. Feels like we needed a game in between 4 and Ragnarok to get time with Odin seeing him do all this crazy scary evil shit and PROVE that he's as intimidating as you made him sound in the previous game. The best part about the game is the character development of Kratos and how he develops BECAUSE of Atreus' influence on him as well and how he and Freya related to each other about their pasts. Everything else? Pretty meh imo.

I saw somewhere that Kratos is testing Hiemdall with the three attacks before you are able to damage him, and you can see it. The first involves slow and wide attacks to gauge his foresight. The second uses quick precise strikes to see how fast Kratos needs to be to hit him (this is the first time he makes contact). The final attack is to see if Hiemdall has any true combat experience outside of his foresight (Kratos is able to land a textbook counter attack on Hiemdall; an attack any true fighter would have been prepared for).

Nah, I think the effect would've been different if Heimdall had the Sharingan. Sharingan reads the target's body, while Heimdall's foresight reads his targets person's mind. If he had the Sharingan, he'd probably have been able to read Kratos's hand going for the grab on that block, or at least the subsequent punch. Even if he still couldn't avoid it, he would've actually seen it coming instead of being so surprised. Same exact thing happened to Sasuke vs. Rock Lee during that unofficial challenge before the Chunin Exam. Rock Lee was faster, so Sasuke couldn't keep up, but his eyes could still see the movements, then again when he developed his 3rd tomoe vs. Naruto, his sight improved and he could see the body's potential future movements, which are limited by muscle force load, vs. Heimdall who can only see a person's planned movements. To give a concrete example, under equal footing, Heimdall could beat Vegeta, but not Goku, because Vegeta is a focused fighter while Goku is an instinct fighter.

@@jeanduresau wait, that doesn't entirely make sense, because by the logic of the fight with Kratos, Heimdall's opponents have to be aware of the actions they're making in order for him to read them. That's why he didn't anticipate the grab that Kratos pulled him into, which led to the first hit, isn't it? I'm pretty sure that his officially recognized foresight ability is to read the opponent's intended movements by making eye contact, which is why movements of randomness or instinct can bypass his ability. And actually, I think that's why the mud from Atreus's arrow surprised him in that one scene where Thor steps in. I haven't played the game myself yet, so correct me if I'm wrong.

So Kratos being a god of war is just pure anger and rage theorizing that Heimdall just saw in his mind was clouded by rage. The way Kratos grounds Heimdall with only two punches to the face and then clubs him again with both forearms and proceeds to bash his head against the ground and strangle him might be very tame compared to almost everything Kratos has done, but the way he *delivers* those hits is so visceral and you can tell it’s because of Heimdall’s consistent threatening of his son.

Very late response, but me personally, I think it's actually kinda brutal because of the fact he wanted to watch him die. Every other enemy, Kratos kills quickly and efficiently, but here? He wanted to watch Heimdall slowly die while looking him in the eye, not as bad as say him looking at poseidon in the eyes before gouging them out, but still. That and the fact that he just leaves his body there, which is a small, but good detail as most bosses disappear when killed, yet Heimdall's corpse doesn't and brings and eerie feeling, especially when Kratos just tosses it over like nothing. Such a threat turned into just another corpse, or maybe I'm geeking way too much😂

The first series of attacks: Kratos gauges Heimdall. He throws slow but powerful punches to test the limits of Heimdall's perception and foresight. Heimdall's dodges are very wide, extremely telegraphed which means that it is very much true, Kratos is NOT going to be able to hit him. The second series of attacks: Kratos gauges Heimdall again. But this time, he's faster. He throws harder, faster punches to see if there's a limit to Heimdall's abilities as a fighter. Heimdall's still dodging, quite readily but he's sloppy, it almost looks like he can barely keep up with how hard Kratos is coming at him. It's only at the end that Heimdall blocks Kratos' last punch because if he hadn't, he would've been hit. A block and not a dodge? Kratos notes this. Third and final series of attacks: Kratos can hit him now and he knows this. As warriors, they are not equal. Heimdall may be a powerful opponent, one that shouldn't be underestimated by any means but Kratos knows he can win now. He comes at Heimdall the fastest and the hardest now. Heimdall's dodging, as usual. However, Kratos understands that at a certain point, he will block. And when Heimdall does, Kratos' catches Heimdall's blocking arm and he delivers the first punch to truly initiate their battle. It's so actually cool, watching this fight over and noticing this. Kratos adapted to Heimdall's foresight in real time to whoop his ass.
