I've got a set of Velocity V5 leg pads for the ODR, with a completely open channel, which I wear *extremely* loose with about three inches of slack in the lace toe ties. I've been using a set of G3s for games where I opened the leg channel as much as I could, and I just received a set of G4s that I've strapped to have an even more open leg channel. The two main points of contact on all my pads are the boot of my skate (specifically the toe ties), and a strap that runs below or across my knee. I don't find anything else particularly necessary for controlling how the pad interacts with my leg. The toes centre the pad on my leg and make sure it rotates back into place; the knee strap ensures that my knee lands squarely in the block when I butterfly, and doesn't roll off the back during a scramble in the crease. As with most goalie stuff though: *do what feels right for you*.

I feel manufacturer’s in the future will design pads so our blades can still be in contact with the ice while in the butterfly. Think of the pad kind of sitting diagonally on your leg. Super thick knee blocks with way offset toe ties and purpose built leg channels.

My old pads have a narrow channel and I wear them tight on the boot and loose all up the leg. Not sure what the channel is considered on my Warrior pads but I wear them with the with the elastic toe and the other elastic strap under my heal on the skates and the calf pad as loose as it goes and the knee strap loose and diagonal

I just started going in the net at training as of last week. Loving the challenge so far. All of my gear is second hand and only my pants, leg pads and stick are borrowed at the moment. Some old pair of Brians, no idea on the size. From what you've said I think it is a narrow channel, due to the straps around knee and calf. Everyone says to keep it loose, but I don't feel comfortable. What I have noticed though. Week 1, dropping down, something was pushing into my right knee, left me with a bruise. Week 2, same thing but on my left knee. I assume the knee pads aren't in correct, as I seem to land onto the knee landing pad. In your experience, is there something I can do on the pads to tinker to help this, or do I need to adjust my knee pads more?

I’m just under 5’8” and wear a 32” + 1.5”. Depends on the manufactures, but you knee should fall in the center of the knee block. If the pad is low on your knee, try running the boot strap behind your skate and it will raise your pad slightly. Conversely, if you tighten your boot strap, it can pull your pad down slightly. Play with it and see what works best for you.
