Goal of the Season contenders (1987-88)

The contenders for the 1987-88 Match of the Day Goal of the Season, won by Liverpool's John Aldridge for his FA Cup semi-final volley against Nottingham Forest. Not hard to spot the running theme with the other contenders from this year as Liverpool (probably uniquely) monopolised the shortlist with some tremendous goals by the likes of Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and Steve McMahon.

Love how there’s a separate sub-competition for goal of the season against Forest. That was a great Forest side, and they seemed always to bring the best out of Aldridge, Barnes and Beardsley.

No one came in for Barnes and Liverpool were the only club to really show an interest. Although a fine winger at Watford, he exceeded anyone's wildest, expectations - many wrote him off as a bad signing.

Just to correct things mate, they did a special, one off Liverpool goal of the season that year because it'd been such a good year for them. BBC league football coverage was all over the place back then because they had to share with ITV and live games were few and far between so whenever they did have a live game, nine times out of ten, it would have been a big game involving Liverpool. Unfair I know but there you go. The following season ITV got full exclusive rights for the next four years.

Does anyone here remember the goal Southampton scored in the 80's against Liverpool? I think Liverpool won 5-1 but Southamptons goal was the best goal I've ever seen. Started in their box then finished with an overhead kick. Seen it on a video years ago but since lost it. Would love it if anyone had a link for that

I lived in Liverpool at this time and went to both Anfield and Goodison a lot. Both teams were wonderful during the period, but some of the football Liverpool played at that time was out of this world. I seem to remember Forest were second to Liverpool and came to Anfield for a top of the table showdown and Liverpool destroyed them.

I suppose they had a lot less footage to choose from back then. Plus you have to remember the standard was a lot lower in those days. In fact, before the back pass rule changed in 92 a lot of football played in the UK was practically unwatchable.
