Go Kart Build Day 1, Make the hubs fit the wheels

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Installing Vevor wheels on OMB hubs. The hubs were recommended, by Amazon, to go with these wheels but they don't fit. The Vevor rims use a Euro pattern with a smaller hub center and bolt circle. In this video I put the hubs on a lathe to resize them and drill/tap for the correct bolt circle.

    a man's life changes drastically when he acquires a "real" lathe. i jumped from a 9X20 like yours to a 14x40 and it was indeed life changing.. at least for my projects.

    Am I missing something here? Wouldn't be a lot easier just to drill the American pattern in the wheel? Use the hub to mark and drill the new holes by using the threaded stud holes in the hub. That's just my 2¢ anyway.

    I totally get what you saying . . But the hub doesn’t sit flush inside the rim so I believe that’s why he is rimming the out side . But you are correct on the holes. You can totally just drill the new holes with a Drill and line them up properly .. but the main part is having the hub sit flush inside the rim .

    I used to be a machinist decades ago, and at that time, a lathe chuck would allow you to remove and reverse the jaws so that you can accommodate larger diameter work. Your chuck may be different, but from the looks of it on the video, you should be able to do that. The jaws should be numbered, so make sure you put them back in the correct order.

  • @WhatIsTheWheel

    Oh yeah, you can reverse them. I have a bigger four jaw chuck as well. I hadn't used a lathe in decades when I got this one. I don't use it to anywhere near its potential.

    @@willphelps6715 I don't think I can part with my lathe. If you have the power and space you can get older commercial ones pretty cheap. That is what I wanted but my shop electrical is pretty maxed out and a thousand pound thing I can't move in my tiny shop is the last thing I need.

    I’m thinking about buying these wheels, I go to votech for machining and am able to turn and mill these to size but was wondering if you knew the exact bolt circle that is on the wheels, cause I can make the bolt circle on a hub I can turn down but would need the bolt circle dimensions to drill, or should I just buy wheels and go off of them

  • @WhatIsTheWheel

    @WhatIsTheWheel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for asking, the bolt circle is 58mm, the hub center is 44 mm, you are looking for "Euro" hubs. If you are taking machine shop, have a lathe that can handle 6" dia material, and have the stock you could make them yourself, it is a good project and pretty straightforward job.

    Thanks for asking. You are either going to need some standard hubs with US/Metric adaptors or metric hubs. I would look for metric go kart hubs, they should have a 58mm bolt circle and a 44mm center flange. Something like this one from BMI www.bmikarts.com/Metric-Pattern-Wheel-Hub-1-or-1-14-Bore_p_1643.html

    @@silverbrawler6617 You should run out and buy one, they are lots of fun. A step drill would do the job. It should stay centered but you will probably need to cut from one side til you hit the next step and then cut from the other side.to get a clean hole. And you want to find a drill that is pretty close to the right size because the kart is "sitting" on the hub center.
