That low rumbling idle, there will never be a train sounding this majestic ever again.

Sh4un1r1k that magnificent scream. The only HSTs that are great sounding are the VP185 ones owned by East Midlands Trains plus the Class 41 Prototype.

@@transportationuk7656 I'm not well versed but the ones I'm hearing from this video is what I remember hearing when I was younger in the 90's under Intercity or my last trip on one with Virgin. With Valenta v12 turbo diesel. VP185? Is that another powerplant replacing the original diesel?

Valentas got more of a punishing on GWML than on ECML because of more frequent stops leading to 'binary driving' (each journey spent either in notch 5 or powering off, with very little use of the other notches), but the Laira and SPM guys did a grand job keeping them maintained despite those mechanical stresses. Midland mainline runs at least included Pancras-Leicester nonstop, but from the late 1980s GW stopped everything at Reading, two-thirds at Didcot and all but one or two at Swindon. ECML's Valentas no doubt became more stressed after all sets became 2+9s. By 2006 re-engining was long overdue as the Valenta failure rate was getting beyond control. I miss their great sound as well, but I don't miss the excessive smoking, the throwing of lube oil and the number of journeys run OEO especially when they overheated in summer!

I remember the Valenta HST’s used to scare me as a kid. That low droning rumble, the turbo whistle as the first power car went past then the whoosh and whine of the cooling fans as the second power car went by and off into the distance. We lived right by the ECML when they were still running. Some nights, if it was calm, the wind direction was right and there was little to no traffic noise, you could hear these screaming off in the distance for minutes at a time. Really spooky to a little kid like me at the time. Only now I can appreciate how awesome they sounded. Sadly with the emphasis on electric eco friendly foreign crap, we’ll never experience anything like this again. I get towards the end the Valentas were getting old, thirsty and temperamental and from a cost and ease viewpoint the MTU’s were the best possible replacement, but even with those flaws the Valenta was an amazing piece of machinery.

The spirit of the Deltics lived on ... but its a shame that all those non-circular wheel tests came to nothing.
