GMC Yukon / Chevy Tahoe Interior Door Handle Fix 1992 - 1999

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Exploring the reason why my passenger door won't open from the inside on my 1999 GMC Yukon SLT. My passenger door won't open from the inside. I'm curious as to why, so I take the door panel off and find that the door handle isn't broken, just poorly designed. This video shows you how to fix an interior door handle. Same for Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, and GMC Sierra.

    I can’t thank you enough for this video. I I’ve a 1999 Chevy Tahoe sport as my first car and I’ve been doing my best to maintain it well, but when the inside handle stopped working I thought it was gonna be an expensive fix, but thanks to you I did it myself for free. And I learned something. It is such a detailed video, thanks so much

    Many thanks for this video. My 99 Tahoe had the same problem. As a short term fix, I just removed the trim ring around the door handle so that the handle could no longer hit it. Works fine until I can get around to removing the door panel and bending the rod.

    To fix this issue properly you need to replace the interior handle. In this video the handle is only partly broken making the connecting rod seam too long and hit the trim piece. It’s only a matter of time before the handle fully breaks off and the your bent rod will not fit on the new handle correctly.

    Had to do a similar repair on a Suburban, but the fix needed to go more toward the latch than the handle... the lever that the rod connects to to actuate latch had almost completely worn through. Just took a touch with the wire-welder and some grinding, and now the interfacing surfaces are as fresh as new and door opens just fine. A bend in the rod only delays another inevitable failure.

    The problem is not the trim piece. The rod from the trim piece is bent from the factory. It lengthens over time. To fix this problem all you have to do is open the black panel at the end of the door. Reach in to find the rod connected to the interior handle and pull down to put more bend it it. Replace black panel and have a few cold brews. Tell your wife it took 2 hours instead the actual 5 minutes and enjoy some alone time. I've done this every 5 or 6 years on my 1995 Tahoe. The weird thing is it's always the passenger door which doesn't get much use.

    @@johnsgottattoos The Daninator did a great job with his video. I actually removed entire door panel this evening to replace a bad Drivers Side Door Lock Solenoid. It started raining so I put it all back together after replacing solenoid. I was going address my DS Door unlocking issue later. After reading @MG's quick trick and a break in the rain, I just adjusted the rod and it worked perfectly. Hell, I adjusted the Passenger Side as well for good measurer. Took 5min for both. 👍 Love my old 1999 Yukon Truckster. Needs a paint job but runs great!!

    Thanks for this video. I found the rod pretty hard to bend and I may have bent it too much with a shorter z. It worked but I didn't like it that the handle was sticking out. I broke the handle (the alu pivoting part) after the fix. A new one is on its way now ($9 - I hope it won't break in a month). I can't quite explain why this wears out after a while, but maybe there was already a crack in that pivot? I can't imagine the rod gets longer over time.

    I went from a 96 ranger that is still perfect inside at 248k miles and runs great to a 95 chevy 1500 w/t with 103k miles because I needed full size and thought id go chevy this time around. NOTHING BUT FITS interior wise. Handles don't work or broke, doors don't line up with strikers, hinges sagging, only one speaker is working because rain flows freely down window through doors, entire dash shakes up and down going over a pebble in the road. EVERY THING inside the truck rattles, clangs, shakes, jiggles. I am shocked really, chevy does a lot of good things but interior is just a design disaster. I'm about to grab a 50 pack of long stainless screws and washers and bolt this sumbitch tight .

    First, yes this will fix the problem, for now. But it's not the trim piece design, otherwise it wouldn't ever have opened from the day the trim was installed, it's the handle itself that the pot metal bends and twists over years of use. Bending the rod will work, but the handle will continue to twist and eventually break, which isn't really a problem because you either replace it the first time or later when it fully breaks, and you may get a year or more out of the "fix". This is a way to fix this for the time being, but if you plan on keeping your vehicle until it falls apart, order a new handle assembly or get one from the junk yard so you have it when it eventually breaks.

    If the handles are just laying there, then there's a good chance the handle has snapped at the hinge point. Check out my other video on replacing the whole handle. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4Fnu9GBf9WvmLg.html This is a very common problem with these trucks.

    Good video but I'm not sure that the trim piece is the problem. I was thinking that over the years of people yanking on the handle has caused the rod to stretch just a bit. Either way good fix. Do you happen to know if you can buy the door panel clips? I already have one broken from the body shop fixing the driver side. I think I paid $140.00 for that one. This one I'm doing myself.

    @TheDaninator

    7 жыл бұрын

    It'll be tough to do, but try to take the door panel off as much as you can to slip your hand in and try to manually release the latch. There may be an issue with the rods/cables that connect to the latch, or perhaps you may have an issue with your door lock mechanism. Do a google search for your issue, you may turn up some results that will give you some more detail. Best of luck to you! Also, a dealer or local repair shop may have a tool to get your door open for you.

    The door handle is most likely broken at the hinge point, VERY difficult to see if you haven't removed the interior handle from the door (by drilling out the rivots). A new handle is $15 (grey) $25 (beige) and highly recommend you replace it! If you 'pretension' the latch pushrod with that 'S' bend, it may cause the latch to pop open in the event of an accident or something similar. This is a very common issue, and it is not caused by the trim piece being designed 'improperly' if that were the case, why would the handle have ever worked? What changed to make it no longer work?

  • @TheDaninator

    @TheDaninator

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Ryan Davidson The handle wasn't broken at the hinge point. That's what I was trying to avoid. Pulling the handle so hard that it would break. Something about these handles makes them loosen over time. Good old wear and tear. It was hitting the trim around the handle, keeping it from moving the distance it needed to actuate the latch. Taking down a small amount of length on the rod helped it actuate a few millimeters sooner. They're just cheaply made. You're right though. For $15, they're easy to replace, and is the appropriate the way to go. If a person doesn't have the money to replace it, this may buy them some time before the handle breaks--and it will break. I've replaced broken ones already.
