GM promotion: 1992 Holden Jackaroo LS vs Mitsubishi Pajero GLS comparison
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Holden sent me this video - a pretty openly biased comparative review by the legendary Evan Green, just a few years prior to his passing - along with a large brochure over 20 years ago. As a 13 year old, I watched it countless times and it was a major factor behind my becoming a Holden enthusiast to this day.
The Holden Jackaroo was regarded highly by the media upon its 1992 launch, including a class-leading 3.2 litre 24 valve V6 engine. In sales, however, it failed to hurt the popularity of its Mitsubishi rival. With only relatively minor updates, it remained on sale for about 10 years.
In overseas markets, the Jackaroo was known by many names and under many badges including Chevrolet, Opel, Vauxhall, Subaru, Honda and Acura. However, its maker was the Japanese truck manufacturer Isuzu, hence it is ultimately a rebadged Isuzu Trooper.

I bought a Isuzu Bighorn Irmscher 3.1 td auto back in 2004 with 98 k in kilometres with all the toys and Recaro seats . Primarily used to tow a car trailer for my car delivery business, Had to change the speedo binnacle to MPH/Miles but other than normal Servicing Brakes and a replacement Radiator it kept going strong for another 209,000 miles and 17 years family life.Suzi was sold to be exported over to the USA Where i hope the next owner will restore and cherish her as we did Best Car ive ever owned
My favorite best car with diferent names Holden Jackaroo, Isuzu Bighorn, Isuzu Trooper, Opel/Vauxhall Monterey, Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, Honda Horizon

True!
Nice video. Although I think he made have had a large brown envelope from GM.
My parents bought a Jackaroo new in '97 and kept it for 16 years because my dad absolutely loved it. A significant factor in the initial selection was the interior space. We'd sat in various 4x4s at the Sydney Motor Show (remember when those were still a thing), and for example the Patrol of the time felt like it had the driver's seat wedged up against the door - for a relatively big car, it felt cramped inside. Then we tried out the Jackaroo, and were amazed - with my dad in the driver's seat and me behind him in the second row (both about six foot tall), we had masses of room to spare. All that said, I'm going to add some points to the criticism of the bias of the "review": The rear of the car is very much set up for LHD markets, and the attempt to spin it as being well designed for a RHD market like Australia is amusing. The rear seat's 60/40 split is backwards - you'd want the 40 on the left because that's the kerb side to load/unload passengers - not on the right where they'd be stepping into traffic. Similarly the split of the tailgate would make more sense the other way around for RHD. Oh and the air con was pretty weak.
Great video - I wish car reviews these days were as in-depth as this. Everything these days is dumbed down for short attention spans.
Yes we get it folks, it's a paid comparison hence the bias towards the Jackeroo, see the logo at 0:26. He did one for Subaru as well, they likely played these tapes at dealerships. Just enjoy the video for its nostalgia and relax.

well im not a Holden fan never have been but i am impressed by my Jackaroo as i am a big fellow i find i have plenty of room within the cabin i must point out that i have previously owned a Pajero which i was very happy with i did however feel a little cramped when in the drivers seat .Dont get me wrong there was nothing i would have changed about the Paj. they are a great 4x4 i find the Jackaroo to be equally as good i will admit both the Pajero and Jackaroo are top 4x4 vehicles im happy with my Jackaroo and thats all that matters

I have a Pajero swb V6 24V. It have rust, but they it's a great car. With 33inch Tyres on 15 inch rims.
I had an identical pajero to this one (year, trim, options, colour, transmission etc..) for years and it certainly wasn't any where near as thirsty as a jackaroo, didn't find the power an issue either, although I did prefer the jackaroo in that remark..
Love the adverts in those days, they dont give a f... every dirty move possible to discredit oponent :P
I see Mitsubishi pajeros from that period still on the road here in lreland..haven't see a isuzu trooper since the late 90s...says it all really.

I see them from the early 90's around quite a bit - and most look like they just drove out of the showroom.
probably the most biased comparison ive ever seen..
Many of the Troopers sold in the USA have been junked. I have a 1996 Trooper, and I can work on it. Why they get junked, one thing is all support as in parts is about dead. And 2, labor costs to repair dont make it worth the fix. I just put in a new heater core myself, luckily got a new one for $45 instead of $400, and the labor on that would have been $900. Just fixing the heater as most people would have to do far exceeds the value of the Trooper. Another issue is the auto trans 4L30E, rebuild costs exceed $3000, which I have not had to do any major repairs. What is good for these trans, adjust the Low Band clutch and replace fluid every 30000 miles and add Lubegard red 12ozs. Just too common failures. Another is some states wont pass your car for driving if it fails emissions testing, and diagnosing and repairing can be expensive too. Redoing the timing belt, there goes another $600 every 60,000 miles.

Adjust the low band clutch just back to original specs?
@scottdowney4318
11 ай бұрын
@@jeffn1384 yes, not hard to do that. They talk about an inch-pound spec to set the band, but really if your mechanical minded and understand transmissions bands, they are a steel clamp on a drum, you just tighten by hand to a few inch pounds (it goes from loose to tight very suddenly), then back off required number of turns.
I love my lwb 93 bighorn 3.1td
Isuzu leads the way in terms of diesel. Pajero is an overall champion back 1997 in Africa.
i like the jackaroo's security coded stereo, though it's probably obsolete today
The Pajero is sold here in the United Kingdom as the Shogun, and in Canada as the Montero.

"...ham fisted driver trying to change at a hundred on a road like this," whilst wrapping his thumbs around the steering wheel...(".) And the super select feature on my Pajero certainly wasn't "a little bit gimmicky..."
A spare wheel that stops cyclists why does not every vehicle have this!
oh, how I like those two cars)))
how much did he get paid? he was struggling with how to present the isuzu as a better car. i think they are both good cars but this review is not fair. this guy is corrupted
How much was he paid to upsell that there jackarooooo.
The Pajero is still prevalent on the roads today, the Holdens are a rarity........

Also Isuzu did the Rodeos - they were great cars - I had one that did over 800,000 kms - had to replace the tail shaft as it wore out.

I'm picking up a very clean 92 Jackeroo this week in July 2023. Still very common where I live. The TDs don't seem to last but the gas models go forever.
The spare wheel doesn't open into the path of traffic...any cyclist who runs into it fucking well deserves to. The door doesn't swing shut because there is a locking mechanism that is easy to operate. Unless you spend your entire life wearing slacks and are limp wristed...

FM now thats a top comment!
Не, Исузу все таки выносливее,тот что с шестеренчатой раздаткой.
The pajero produced its max torque at 4000rpm... Lying to push their product.
As seen in the title it's a GM paid for info comparison. It wouldn't put me off buying a Pajero.
don't abuse your vehicle like that stunt sequence
confused
needs to be more thorough
This is such a biased review! The build quality of Mitsubishi back then was way better than isuzu.
Both are just as good and just as shit.. pajero is lighter, jack is roomier
This guy is totally and utterly unbearable, with this being an old vid you can look back in hindsight and see his failure in every aspect of his biased appraisal....the Pajero went on to gain a solid reputation still being made today selling millions worldwide. This guy is a total joke.

I think the Jackaroo was way under-rated by most people. The Jackaroo would probably still be on sale, but a false report in the USA suggested they had a tipping problem, this was eventually debunked, but the damage was done, sales dived and not long after Isuzu stopped making them.

Isuzu 4wds are still being made. They've won plenty of 4wd awards all over the world for many years. They just started using the Isuzu name instead of selling them as GM branded products.

I say the Jackaroo is a far better car ....If the idiots are Holden dropped the isuzu diesel and put a gen 3 V8, would still be the best 4wd on the market My Jackaroo diesel had 3 engines before it got to 53,000 km Total bomb I went to landcruisers in 2005, and have never looked back PS the guy is full of shit and biased, but Pajeros are pull of plastic
