GM Power Antenna Repair - Replace Cable - Motor runs all the time

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I replace the cable which pushes and pulls the antenna mast up and down.
When this plastic cable breaks, the antenna motor will run constantly and eventually burn out, after discharging the battery several times.
Often, when getting an older car going, you will find that the antenna has been disconnected to stop the motor. After replacing the broken cable, you will probably have to locate and reconnect the wiring.
The parts which I used came from Zip Corvette parts. The part number and contact information is below:
The replacement cable is reasonably priced compared to a new antenna assmebly. These antennas are very well built and you will not be able to purchase any aftermarket antenna mechanism that even comes close to this quality.

    Here I was thinking there was something wrong with my radio causing the motor to run on. I found that that cable was broken, but I didn't connect the dots that it would cause the motor to keep running because it never saw that high current stop at the end of the spool. Other vids had me thinking I needed to spool it correctly in order to time the motor, but it was pretty easy and automatic after all. Thanks for the vid showing the process.

    Nice job David! I did this repair on a 95 Riviera a few months ago. Trunk antennas have a drain tube because water will migrate down the antenna. I also noted that mine had an extra "timing wheel" that counted the turns and mechanically stopped the drive wheel instead of putting strain on the antenna cord. I will send you pics on your f/b page.

  • @davida1hiwaaynet

    Thanks for the info and pictures of the timing wheel. That is a good idea to save stress on the mechanism. Interesgingly, the one in the Century also has the drain tube connection point. No tube needed with it hidden in the fender - but the port is there.

    GM made Mast repair kits for Bent & Broken lower Masts, upper mast with Cable, as well as sold a replacement gear. A few different types of power antennas were used across GM vehicles. if you can't find new parts you can junk yard hunt for similar looking units and Frankenstein one. Mount brackets are car line, year and trim specific.

    Be mindful that (like an older "zip-tie"), that these cables become brittle (like macaroni) and hence, they WILL break again ... *the NEW replacement mast kits render that matter academic however, as they are made with a metal cord.

  • @compu85
    @compu857 жыл бұрын

    Interesting how GM did the antenna control. My Benz's original power antenna used an electronic current sensing circuit to tell when the mast was at a limit and turn the motor off. I replaced it with a Motorola CB combo antenna. I don't know how it turns the motor off, but it does have q clutch inside that clicks several times when the mast is at its limit.

    Ok,the way I ended up getting this done was to put the cable in the mast and extend it all the way. Then I put the halves together and used the motor to draw the cable in with a battery. + goes to gray. - goes to green. Just make sure to unhook the power once it's wound up.

    What position are the limit switches in to run the antenna up or down? Working on mine, I have no continuity between gray/ green or white/ green wires to either raise or lower mast until it stops motor. I can set up the lower limit switch in the stop position but when I apply power to raise mast it moves a fraction of an inch, opening limit switch and motor quits running. Seems to me the upper limit switch should be making contact to raise mast fully but this isn't happening . Any suggestions?

    Nice job David! I have 2 Cadillac Fleetwoods a 94 and 96. The 94 the antenna never has gone up all the way, probably about 6 inches short. Over the last few years I have got 3 at junkyards. Being a 25+ year old car, none of them worked. But I was able to make 1 good one out of 4. Thank you. I still have the one that doesn't extend all the way. Cable is good, I'm guessing the motor is tired and can't do the job. The 2 other motors on the other units, are dead. Any ideas? I'm thinking I might try to get an antenna from a deville caddy and combine parts etc to give me a spare. Tom

    wow. I was wondering if anyone knew how these things work. wow. guess i found him. I think my relay isn't working on my 81. New antenna purchased 3 times. When I hook it up I show 3 wires with voltage. Or nothing. So pretty sure I'm shorting out the antenna. I've ordered a fourth antenna so that when I can figure out whats going on with my relay I can install it and it will work. My guess is there is no one selling these relays any longer and even a used one would be very expensive. So the alternative is to find just a relay that works like this one and rewire it. Yet I have no clue how it is wired or really what to do next. I guess I could get a cheap pwr antenna that has red black and blue wire to radio. Yet these seldom hold up. I wish I could figure out how to make this type you show here to work with either a new way to wire it or see if I can one day find a used relay that works. So frustrating. ive got wires going everywhere on this 81.
