1:00 I am glad someone finally took the 5 seconds to state the different Passlock systems. I have cruised around looking into this system and they all seem to intermix these systems all as the same thing. They are not! I have the system you show here: a Hall Effect sensor built into the lock cylinder. I have had to deal with this headache a few time over the years and finding detailed information like this is like striking gold. Thanks for the detailed upload!

No they are not the same, but they all have same effect. There are many different types , vats, passlock, passlock 1, 2 ,3 and I believe a passkey type systems. I have learned that they all run off the resistance of 15 different ohms settings, I have done a vats system this way and it is still working. So I know that the other types will work with the right ohms resistance.

"PROBLEM SOLVED" after days of trouble. SPRAYED CRC "Electronic Spray" ($3 at Walmart) into my "aging ignition." (Electronic spray will not hurt the "dusty old" ignition). Unbelievable! "1998" Chevy Cavalier 2.2L engine. Chevy wanted $300 for a reset. Had it towed several times and local mechanics tried everything. Found this $3 CRC spray solution in a forum. "Security light" kept coming on. Stalled in traffic. Had to wait to start again. Looked at all the "bypass solutions" and Amazon gadgets too. When it works for you remember to share and pay-it-forward.

Thanks for sharing! I hope I don't have to go this route any time soon but know it will happen eventually. My '99 Suburban keeps dropping the key code and I have to go thru the relearn process often. I'm waiting for a re-manufactured Passcode box (VATS) right now. I tried the wedge trick and that kinda worked after going thru the relearn process but it still goes into tamper mode every few days. My issue is it starts and then shuts right off after 2 seconds running. Now the security light stays on and it won't relearn the key. Thanks for sharing, I'm sure I'll be doing this job before long!

@@chriscampbell9681 No I didn't. I got the reman Passcode module and installed it, I had the same No start issue! Turns out someone had done the diode by-pass at some point. So the new passcode module wasn't getting the right ohms from the key switch. Replaced the bypass wire and put it back to factory. Then my buddy (GM tech) reset the Anti-theft code in the ECM and it's back to normal/factory. Not crazy about hacks & tricks, so I went factory route. Hope this helps.

So presuming this is a passlock 1 system (like on my '98 grand am), a new hall effect sensor would most likely solve this security- will crank, but no start issue? Honestly, I have a hard time believing a resistor will honestly fix it (that and I'm not very good at soldering). Thank you for putting your time in posting this video. :)

Yes after you replace the sensor AND go through the 30 minute relearn procedure it will take care of the problem of starting but not continuing to run. I doubt a resistor would fix it as well. That is why mentioned it in the video. The way I see it is the factory original part lasted for 21 years. If I put a good quality replacement part in it then I don't see why I shouldn't get another 20+ years out of it. Who knows if I will even have the truck by then. What I do know is that I don't want to cheap out and a year down the road be facing this problem again. Thanks for the comment.

I do not remember if it was solid or flashing. What I do remember was a very clear symptom. As soon as I would start it the engine would start for a second and then shut down. It was like I had turned the key off but I didn't. Also keep in mind if you changed the key cylinder you will have to do a relearn procedure. I highly doubt the cylinder would be the issue because I am not sure how a magnet would go bad.

Unfortunately this video was made many years ago. But that's okay because if you watch the video you can see how far I had to take the steering column apart to get full access to that passlock sensor. You have to take the whole plastic cover off around the housing you have to pull the steering wheel you have to pull your clock spring for your airbag. You have to take the turn signal switch out. And then if I remember right as you can see in the video there are two Torx bolts if I remember right once you pull those two bolts then the housing comes loose. You don't replace the sensor itself it's a whole aluminum housing with the sensor built-in that gets replaced.

@Bbernhardsr yeah..I followed your link to rock auto and found the Dorman part #. We bought a 99 k1500 suburban in 2000. Problem/ no start showed maybe 5 years ago. 1st time Problem showed up, fuel pump replaced. Have a place at Myrtle Beach. Drove there..unloaded , half hour later got in it to go somewhere and no start. 1st thing I thought was fuel pump. Went to tool shed for something to tap bottom of tank as wife tried to start. Before I could tap, it fired up and didn't have the problem again until the next years Beach trip. Next year, drove to Beach and parked in the exact same place in the yard..unloaded and got ready to go somewhere..no start ! This time I had it towed to blacks auto, a popular shop, who had it for 2 days and called to say we can't find anything wrong 🤔 They said it cranks every time for us. Asked me if I had a chipped key..nope. That was probably 3 years ago. Had a no start last year and took to chevy dealership who tested and gave me a part number for the 'pass lock sensor ' and a part # for the ignition module. Said they couldn't get the parts tho. I know from research that you generally can wait with the ignition to 'on' position for a while and the security light will go out. I've found that I can SLOWLY rotate the ignition switch towards the point of the starter bump..watch my guage/ security light. The ABS and Parking brake lights come on and security light goes off..I rotate the rest of way to the point the starter engages..it starts every time or has so far. The no start happened this time a day after I did a full tune up ..cap , rotor, plugs and wires. Last week . I'm ready to try replacing the pass key sensor or pay somebody. I'm hoping all this i've typed will help a person caught out somewhere with a no start situation and save them $$ and stress . **I'd suggest anybody reading this to try slowly rotating the switch till you feel resistance..then stopping..rotate a little more then stop..so on, to see if the security light goes off. At this point finish rotating till starter engages. Thanks for the quick reply sir.

@@dugangant now also those lock housings have a common issue. The connector that goes into the top of the housing can get a bad connection over time. My other Chevy had that problem. It was intermittent. The fix is to wedge something small into the connector to make it lock in firmly. What I did was take a toothpick. I pressed it down on the left side and snapped it off. Then I flipped it around and stuck it down in the right side and snapped it off. Now when I say stick the toothpick in I am meaning to stick it between the plug itself and the plug socket. This solved my issue and firmed up the plug. When you take off the top column cover you will see the plug. It is small with small wires. If you take the wires and gently move them you will see how the plug wiggles in the connector. That wiggling needs to be fixed. Hope it helps. Also there are 2 screws holding the cover on. I thought there was just one but the one that was hiding on me was tward the center on the bottom of the cover.
