GM layoff announcement sparks controversy

General Motors faces a barrage of criticism over a plan to cut thousands of jobs, even though it's profitable. The cuts will affect 15 percent of the company's white-collar workers and many high-paying factory jobs. GM CEO Mary Barra said the move gives the company flexibility to invest in the future. Kris Van Cleave reports.

jake black When has GM made an "excellent business choice" in the last forty years? If this is one, that would certainly be new. GM was bailed out for one reason, jobs, not because their product was especially good. So it shouldn't be surprising that the Americans who paid that bill now object to them shipping thousands of those bailed out jobs across the border.

Orlando Brown They did not! There were two components of the GM bailout. The first was a loan which GM paid back. The second was an equity portion where the US government took a percentage of ownership in General Motors. The ownership was later sold and the taxpayers lost $11.2 billion dollars on the transaction. People who work for GM pretend not to know this but it's common knowledge among anyone who knows anything.

A lot of the dealerships play a role in this too. Another issue that no one is talking about is the fact that there are a lot of potential buyers who would like to buy a car but get shut out due to credit problems. They get turned down because of bad credit or no credit at all, even if they have a job that pays them well enough to afford it. That, in turn, leaves dealerships with a gluttony of cars that they cant sell. Now you're seeing the consequences of exclusion.

Nothing new here GM been opening and closing American plants since forever. I'm a truck driver that use to deliver direct to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant and was laid off in 2016 when they downsized n before that use to run shuttles for their Lake Orion Assembly Plant and is currently running loads for their Flint plant the last seven out of the eight years I've been a truck driver I always get jobs with the automotive industrys the main reason is because I live in Detroit and here it's quite easy to get a job that have something to do with the automotive field another reason is I enjoy working off the schedule of these plants they get holidays off and two weeks off in the summer for change over and one thing I learned about working in the automotive field is to keep a good nest egg save save save! Because one minute they have you working hard you're making plenty of hours and good money then next out of nowhere things slow down without warning and they're laying off and shutting down. The crazy part is I've always wanted to purchase a ct6 or lacrosse but they're so expensive it's like for that price I might as well get an SUV n get more bang for my buck maybe that's one of the reasons people are buying SUVs also.

This includes lawyers, engineers, accountants, all occupations straight down the line. A merger guarantees layoffs and mergers/acquisitions are happening more frequently than ever. Corporate America is a good place to make money but you’d better not get too dug in and always have your eye on the next opportunity. I’ve worked for American corporations my entire career and layoffs were just as common in the 1980s when I began as they are now.

They should have slowly shifted production lines of cars that have good sales to the US. The closing of these factories are producing cars that not many people buy. Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac are their biggest lines. Yet half or close to half of their lineup is undesirable. They have to reinvent themselves if they are to survive.

This does not shock me. Keeping interest rates this low for this long has fueled years of consumer debt growth, supporting big 3 top line sales for the last decade. Look at auto loan ABS. Now look at leasing growth relative to new sales over the past 5 years. Rising rate headwinds are slowing demand and off-lease volume is flooding the secondary market, which will influence new car pricing/demand. We are at the forefront of the end of a historic credit cycle (and 40 year bond bull market). Rates can only go up from here and America's balance sheet isn't ready.

I live on an island found in the Indian Ocean known as Mauritius. Honestly guys, I just cannot explain it myself! But most of the people in my own country have left their car aside & started buying SUV because of practicality. It's just like that, instead of wasting some $25000-$40000 in sedan cars, it's better to buy Japanese SUV as you can go everywhere with them & they are more affordable than sedan cars. The trend nowadays is that more people are simply looking forward to buy SUV's instead of sedan for practicality, efficiency & family security. I myself, I've been driving cars over the past 20 yrs & recently I just sold my Chevrolet Cruze & bought a Honda Vezel ( Hybrid) for fuel efficiency & practicality. Nowadays, it's not luxurious cars that counts, it's practicality & It's where SUV's comes into the picture. I'm simply sad to see that GM has decided to close out due to competitors but nevertheless , GM could also have saved the job of all its workers by diversifying its products. It could have started the manufacturing of different SUV's & trucks to compete with its rivals. Anyway, that's part of life & it's pure business. As someone said, they simply don't care about loyalties! Else, they could have saved the jobs of so many workers!

I hate the crossover trend it ruins the car industry as a whole and puts sports cars and other vehicles at risk and other cars that are performance driven to be possibly next in line to be stopping production, I have a 2017 Mustang and love driving it every time and hope that the mustang never gets booted from Fords line up if so ill just move to dodge.

Pretty grimy to layoff all those people and then turn around and give urself a $20,000,000 bonus... Should start modifying existing plants to build different cars. Its the bean counters that build these factories specific to models. They dont want to give any extra space when building to keep costs at rock bottom. Now they are stuck shutting down huge factories because the paint room cant fit a crossover, etc. You should build these factories with capabilities to do what u need at any time not a given time.

I find it interesting that the rest of the manufacturing is doing very well tariffs or not. Here where I am companies are begging for good people, so the laid off, won't be long (white or blue collar) if they want to work. There is a lot more competition with cars, Jaguars stepped up their game as well as Volvo. You've got KIA/Hyundai/Genesis out there not to mention the start up electric vehicles like Tesla. Japanese and European vehicles are still doing really well. It's a shame, I do like the new styling of the Impala, CT6, Lacrosse (all the same platform) and the Cruze.

They don’t want a crossover they what sports cars and Dodge is delivering. Please bring back the Z28 and make it 400hp rear wheel drive or a new sport coupe

Anyone who takes a manufacturing job knows the risk and potential risk of a product shutdown. If you have a manufacturing job you should save and make a plan to move if the plant shuts down. As more and more jobs are going to automated robots over the next 10 years millions of jobs will be lost. We already see cashiers being changed to self check out. Soon you will see fast food with a screen to select your meal, pull up and pay and a machine will hand you your food. UBER, taxis, buses, trains and in about 15 years airline pilots will be all automated jobs. If you have a job that can be replaced by a robot you need to start looking for another line of work with in the next 3 years. I work in technology so I have already passed this on to my children who are recent college graduates. My oldest works for a insurance company. The price of full coverage insurance in 10 to 15 years will drop to $50 a month because the more car and trucks become automated it will reduce the risk and accidents dramatically. This will also put body shops out of business or reduce their numbers.

The public driving bigger is cause of a number of things... First..in their minds "bigger is safer"..but only if the larger vehicle! Second...C.A.F.E. regulations impact CARS more then trucks or SUVs. Third.."image" ...hyped up public persona of success..of power , pride, aggressiveness, excess...associated with larger vehicles. Fourth..."impotent" smaller cars (even mid size like impala!) are seen as a surrender over or compliance with (in the minds of the average U.S. citizen) to government strict control and dominance as to what is officially "allowed"...the Americans see small cars as being euro/Asian lifestyle...so hence counteract by buying big.
