We were a GM family, 4 generations until the 1990's. Cracked cylinder heads, worn out camshafts, rust, leaks, electrical problems, suspension issues, ect, ect. We walked away to imports. I never understood their decision to get rid of Pontiac(their excitement division) yet keep GMC truck which are rebadged Chevys. I'm not sure who they are trying to sell Buicks to(kind of like Ford's Mercury division now extinct).

MKE Dan - The 1970s and 1980s were the worst years for American cars. The GM cars sold today are the best they have ever made. As for GMC trucks, it used to be that all Chevrolets, and only Chevrolets, were sold by Chevrolet dealers. The GMC pickup was available to Buick, etc. dealers who did not sell the Chevrolet marque. The GMC was a little more upscale to distinguish it from Chevrolet and appeal to Buick and Cadillac customers.

Federico Schael Toyota I feel like will capitalize on this. They can still steal the remaining scraps of the sedan market with the redesigned Corolla, Avalon and the Camry. And they can cash in on the SUV craze with the CH-R, RAV4,Highlander,4Runner,Sequoia and Landcruiser. They are going to dominate. So will Honda and Nissan. Ford saw the righting on the wall long ago and are making bank selling SUVs and Pickup Trucks

Samuel Josiah Absolutely!!! Toyota will dominate and the climate change doesn't exist! Do you know what is the big issue with Toyota? They don't innovate anymore. They love to be the second and third of this relationship. They are always four step behind of everyone on the industry. They just celebrate reliability and that's it. They don't take risk at all. How many years has the 4runner platform? almost 9 years? and it doesn't seem like there is any new all model in the next years. The same with the corolla. Camry seems to be one of the exception. Reliability is not enough to be first in this Industry. Look at GMC, less reliable vehicle ever, and they are first on sales. Ford loves innovation and they're becoming more and more reliable with time. Sorry, but Toyota doesn't have the guts to be and maintain a first position on the industry.

Brian Allen Binog Brian! Ypu hit nail in the head. Mary was a knee jerk hire who's not a " car guy" and us a bean counter. She sucked the life right out of GM and they're afraid to fire her because of Code Pink and#MeToo. You know what sells cars? Excitement!! Speed, performance, reliability. With gas prices now getting at or below $2.00 a gallon for regular, give us some excitement in a car. All electric is not " all that." People still want to drive far and there's a limit to the Bolt and Tesla. Sure, you could supercharge every 3-4 hours on road, but most want to get up and go, go, go. To stop making the Volt is downright stupid and is Who killed the electric car Part Deux.? The Bolt is a halo electric that most won't buy into because of 1. Looks 2. Price 3. Range anxiety Most of the cars Mary is killing are save able. The Impala is a marketing icon. The Caddy , larger cars, are as well. Give them AWD and check reliability. It often costs more to close a factory than to just slow it down. This is just a slow market and lots of cars on road are aging from the Obama junker clunker buyback program. Cash for clunkers put a lot of new cars on road and those are aging now. Why kill some iconic Marques?

The problem with GM is their marketing. They never reinvented themselves to appeal with every generation. They lost their grassroots. A simple good ol’ American retrofit to each of their vehicles would spark the market. Look how well the Vette and Camaro did. Dropping RWD in the Impala was ignorant. The lacrosse needed AWD OR RWD with a less dull design. It’s sad to see GM lose to import manufacturers because the ceo and marking team can’t get their act straight. Even after a tax payer bailout. I’m pissed. Such bulls**t

  • @kwt7667g

    @kwt7667g

This is the most intelligent comment Patrick! GM just keeps blowing up their marques over and over trying to reinvent themselves each time losing their grassroots. Take Chevrolet: They killed the Nova, Chevelle, Malibu (brought back), Impala, Caprice, Monte Carlo, Celebrity, Cavalier, etc. What the hell is a "Cruise" anyway. Ultimately it doesn't matter, because you blink and it's gone. GM just keeps hitting that reset button over and over. How long has Toyota made their Crayola and Crammy cars? Decades of market continuity. Ultimately it doesn't matter if GM built a nice "Cobalt" 12 years ago that was a good car for someone because it's gone now. So, when someone asks, "What is a Trax?" Who cares, it'll be gone a few years anyway.

  • @ariip

The problem with GM is that they do not care. Like most American ice car manufacturers. They care more about a few dollars than peoples lives, or their happiness and making a better product. If they did care and had the foresight and smarts, they would not have killed the EV1 which people begged for and stood in a candle lit vigil. They could have made a killing and continued their ev program. They are stupid, foolish, and are just a bitch to the oil industry. They have lost to imports because they are foolish, lazy, stupid and shortsighted. They do not look at the long term. No vision for the future. Again, like so many american companies. What they need is get the old farts out and replace them all with new young visionary management. No joke. Former GM CEO Bob Lutz (putz I call him) is a climate change denier and he says on live tv on Mill Maher that 97 percent of scientists do not agree with climate change. Yes they do agree, that is a fact and easy to prove. Just look it up. DUH! He just can not acknowledge it or it would made him look more foolish. So as a result he looked foolish anyway denying a fact about what scientists actually have said which can be proven that they said, nothing to do with the validity of information that they gave when they did speak. For those who still do not grasp, We can prove what they said, even though what they said was debatable by fact or not. But for all those idiots still who debate what they said, what they have said has many times more evidence and facts to prove it then they need. Why else would such a majority agree. 3 percent will always exist who a either paid by special interests or bias. Just like how there are clueless people who still think the earth is flat etc.

@@ariip , the GM EV 1 was hipster envirotard bullshit that ironically destroyed the environment far more than conventional vehicles and furthermore, even by the standards of current electric vehicles, it would have been behind even the Ford Model T in the terms of its successors, so killing off the EV 1 was actually a blessing in disguise, as it spurned people to spend more time to waste in polluting the environment even worse while all the time pretending to "care about the environment." I'd like to think if they had introduced the Pontiac G8/Chevy SS (Holden Commodore) as the new Impala instead of its own niche model, the Impala might have had a future… But the new Impalas are much nicer to live with and sport much nicer interiors than the SS. In truth, I think this was inevitable. The large car segment has been fully functionally replaced by SUV's which have the perk of being macho station wagons. For a large sedan now, either you go for a luxury import or you get an Avalon. And let's face it, the Avalon was always the best option for the people who still bought large sedans - people looking for the last car they would ever drive: an old-school Buick but with bulletproof reliability that would literally outlive the owner with very little effort. For fun performance cars now, we pretty much only have muscle cars and compact sports cars, and those options have thinned out a bit over the last two decades.

It seems to me that the only sedans and coupes that are selling in the modern era are the sportier, retro inspired models like the Dodge Charger/Challenger, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, etc. Even the luxury market is dominated by contemporary SUVs. If GM were serious about selling sedans, they would reintroduce a retro inspired version of the Pontiac GTO or Chevy Chevelle SS to compete with the likes of the Charger... and you KNOW the Trans Am/Firebird would be a HUGE HIT! Of course, when weighing risk vs. reward, the bean counters are always going to play it safe.

If you have that many separate vehicles that you can just cut them, and still have a variety, that's your problem. They had 19 separate "cars," and 15 separate SUV/Crossover vehicles. That's just too many options to have true variety between models. You're only getting small variations between vehicles at that point. The better option is to reduce the models, and offer the most desired features of the ones you're dropping as options on the remaining models. That's the concept that many foreign companies have followed. Subaru-13 models total. Honda really only has 13 models. Hyundai has 8 models. Ford has a total of 26. And that's counting things like the Econoline vans (typically for work), and the Raptors, Shelby Mustangs, and the true sport models. The real issue is an oversaturation of models.

I think GM is making a mistake here. Not everyone wants a SUV nowadays and when the prices of gasoline skyrocket again, people will be wanting their cars and not their larger SUVs and trucks. Cars also handle a lot better than the taller SUVs. I would rather drive my 16 year old Monte Carlo than my mom's Equinox. The handling is way better, because your center of gravity is lower. GM should have lowered their high prices on everything. Maybe then their sedans would have sold better.

I have been thinking about this all week, ever since the news broke. I can honestly say that I haven't even looked at a GM car even a little bit in the last 8 years. Now I hate SUV's with the fiery passion of 1000 suns, but I don't think that sedans are going anywhere. I think that the reason that GM, along with Ford, are dumping their Sedans is because they can't compete with the majority of import brands that all produce exceedingly better cars, and the real funny things is that they have for YEARS. Companies like Toyota, Honda, and Datson(Nissan) all took off in the 70's, because they built better cars than anything that the Detroit 3 could make, unless it was a 400hp land yacht. It sucks that GM is closing 5 Plants, and laying off 15,000 people, but the reason is because people are not buying the cars that are being made at these factories, not because they aren't good cars, but because they still aren't as good as the cars from Toyota and Honda.

I actually hate the liftgates on crossovers because when they open up you have to step back and literally craw into the rear storage to put stuff away. Also, good luck trying to open the liftgate if your are in a garage and it hits the ceiling or if you are on street parking and it can't open all the way because of a car parked behind you. With a sedan trunk on the other hand, I don't have step back to open the trunk, the trunk doesn't require any space above or behind it to open, and with a sedans trunk, I can just drop my stuff directly into the storage like I am putting something in chest opposed to trying to climb into the back to drop off/retrieve storage. Just my two cents

If the goal is to preserve US jobs, then an informed consumer is the best defense. If you decode the VIN number, the first two characters identify the vehicle final assembly location; 1G = assembled in USA, 2G = assembled in Canada, 3G = assembled in Mexico. GM plans to bring the Chevy Cruze built in Mexico to supply the 100K + sales after closing the Lordstown assembly plant which builds the Cruze today. If the consumer asked the dealer for a new Cruze assembled in the USA, and they can only offer the built in Mexico vehicle, then maybe a better option would be the Chevy Sonic which is assembled in Michigan’s Orion plant. GM will pay attention if inventory levels increase due to no sales. And I am sure the good workers at Orion assembly would welcome the added sales.

Bottom line is the car lines don't make enough profit to pay for the R&D for updates and facelifts let alone an entire new chassis. No one wants a car anymore, and they go unsold. The discontinuing of some of these models makes sense. However, I do think that GM is making a mistake by dropping the Cruze. My wife and I have a 2018 Cruze. We purchased it after test driving the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, and Volkswagen Jetta. The Cruze was the best value and is a very comfortable car to drive. We are very pleased with it. I think that GM continuing to offer a compact sedan will help to keep the other brands honest. Competition is good.

Best value because price was the only way it could compete, which means GM was making almost no money on it just to prop up its sales. They may only be killing the Cruze for North America. Like Ford is doing with the Focus. At the end of the day, if you live in Canada and want a small car you’re gonna buy a Civic, Corolla or Mazda3. There are competitors, but those take the cake. Since the Cruze was borrowed from Europe anyway, it may just continue to live there. For that matter, the Camry (different class) is being re-introduced to European markets, so there’s another indicator that the sedan market is doing well in other demographics.

The first generation were one of the most unreliable new Chevrolet's you could get, and one of the least reliable newer cars period. I'm sure a lot of this was because most people buying a car in this class either didn't know it had a turbo or wouldn't have a clue on how to take care of one. Regardless, comparing it to many Asian competitors it was sub-par at best.

The problem with all of this 'Gee-Whiz!' technology in these cars and others is that when it breaks, it breaks *expensively*. There are several computerised systems in modern cars that last about as long as your lease does. These car companies all tout this technology, and state they have to invest in tech to stay current and 'competitive' (whatever that now means), but they never tell you what happens when it all eventually fails due to age.

The CT6 is beautiful. But it has too much tech. I think older Americans get overwhelmed by it and they shunned the car in favor of simpler cars like the Avalon and thus caddy missed their target market. GM also missed their target market by confusing everyone with their volt/bolt nameplates. Wtf?

A big problem GM has is all their cars in the lineups look almost identical. Just bigger or smaller versions of themselves except for Camaro and Corvette. Even interiors all look the same. I usually have to look for the name on the car to figure out which one I’m looking at. I mean, how many designers do they have working, two, one for the inside and one for the outside? They can come out with some awesome concepts but never put them in production. Look at the Escala. It is a really beautiful car. But instead of producing it they are whittling away at it piecing it out to other vehicles. Then they will make another car and not touch it for several years so why by a car that is outdated already. Now they bring out the Silverado. It’s got like 6-8 different trim levels. Is that really needed? And look at the prices they are charging. They are way overpriced especially Cadillac. People can’t afford new cars every year or two. Dad used to bring home a brand new Impala:Bel Air every year up until 1965. That’s the last new car he bought. And every year they looked totally different.

Yes, the CAFE standards is the reason for such small engines in full size trucks. The four banger in the Silverado is the same in liters as the Ford 2.7 though. It has 310 hp and 340 pounds of torque. It isn't that weak. That's a lot more horsepower than the old 4.3 at 195 and not much less torque, with a good bit more efficiency. You have to see how that turbo kicks in also. It kicks in at 1500 rpm. You get 80% of your torque at a relatively low rpm. The Focus ST performance car turbo doesn't kick in until 1800 rpm. People like to talk a lot of crap about something they really don't know much about.
