UPDATE: So as some have mentioned the 6th gen Honda Transmissions have a high defective rate, especially for the V6 model. The #2 suggestion in my video is for the 4 cylinder models but they too have issues with the Automatic Transmissions, especially after 2000. So to clarify you should either get a manual or a 5th gen Accord with an Auto. The rest of the list is perfect as described, no matter what goes on in the comments section :-)

Geo Prizm for the win! However the Toyota 1.6/1.8 DOHC engines are indeed interference. Also they tend to develop obscene oil burning issues by 200k miles due to sticky piston rings if synthetic oil was not used. Still one of my favorite cars! Toyota 3.0 and 3.4 DOHC V6 are more bomb-proof :)

Ratchets And Wrenches I had a 1998 accord with the V6. When the transmission issue was diagnosed the car had 100,000 miles on it. It ran for another 133,000 miles before it really acted up.

Watched your video and it is really good - I agree with your addendum. I owned two V6 Honda (an Acura TL and Accord) and watched as I lost a transmission on both before reaching 60,000 miles. One of the worst cars I owned. Otherwise, that list is excellent! I ironically own a 2006 Saab 9-3 and the powertrain is original with a young 134,000 on it. Should be able to keep it for 300,000 if I want.

When I was looking for a car for my daughter for college, I stopped by a tow truck operator and asked him which cars he never tows. He said "Any Toyota".

My 96 4Runner Limited @175k miles is by far my favorite vehicle yet. Nice features for the year and they all work still. I keep up with fluid change intervals and other basic maintenance. As you said, rock solid.

I literally just saw a beige 1985 or 86 Toyota Camry hatchback driving by me several days ago. Yet even 90s American cars are a rare find, and I live in an area where this is a ton of salt in the winter time. God bless Japan and truly caring about making good quality cars.

i have a 99 camry. had an oil leak i couldn't find for months. just kept adding oil until 1 day mechanic saw the oil pump gasket was broken. changed that, the water pump and timing belt and it runs like nothing ever happened to it. 217k miles. very cheap to maintain.

These cars are too outdated nowadays. When the video was made it was good prices. But nowadays you should only get these 90s car for 1000max. If your spending $1500 then get at least a 2003 car. That’s what I do.

Lol anytime you get rear ended I suggest you go to the hospital to have it checked out. A lawyer would be good also but if not at least the medical folks will allow you get a nice settlement offer which I also suggest turning down. Never take the first offer as you can usually get them to make a better offer. Also you dont have to settle on any offers.

Only person i know that owned a corolla, i don't exactly what the issue was from but i think it was transaxel . So my friend stopped at a convient store. We came out put it in reverse, you could floor it ,and the engine would bogg. It wouldnt even roll back in nuetral. So i had to drag it out of the parking space with my truck

I have a '97 Geo Prizm - pretty much the same thing - which was going strong at over 260K, original engine and transmission, until it got sideswiped.

Agree about the Corolla, had one where the "speed sensor" went bad and the car shifted weird. Thanks to folks like you on KZread providing valuable info I was able to fix myself for 20 bucks. I wonder how many people with the same problem took it to a shop and were told they would need a transmission for 3K! Knowledge is power- keep up the good work.

What do you mean shift weird I have a 93 corolla and it revs fine in first then it's like limp mode in the other gears and my overdrive doesn't work

Previous owner maintenance is as important or maybe even more important than make/model (they manufacturer hasn't touched the car since day 1, and some owners destroy great cars). You'll stack the odds in your favor by getting one from this list, but don't be fooled by buying a neglected one.

I've owned this car for almost ten years now and Five O must have had an excellent maint. program because it has never given me any problems and has been super reliable. Not to mention, for a car this size and weight, it really hauls A$$!

Mercury Grand Marquis driver here. The cars are rocks! I've got 146000 on my and still truckin! Very few issues to be sure. I've got to replace the air blend door actuator next week (common problem). Its costly to have a shop do, but there are hundreds of do it yourself videos on the net to fix literally anything on the car! I highly recommend the cars. You can't go wrong with one.

First car I got for my son in college was a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis(basically Crown Vic)....he has now graduated college and is still driving it several years later ....These cars also have a very good crash rating. I have owned all of these cars mentioned in this video...some in excess of 300K miles. Very good info...keep up the good work.

In my opinion the grand marquis is a better choice than the crown victoria. You get grandpa's car with a glove box full of oil change and tune up receipts, and it's never been abused or gone on high speed pursuits. Yes, fleet vehicles are well maintained, but regularly abused. You also get Lincoln luxury in a crown vic style body. I paid $650. for mine 3 years ago. Did tires and brakes, and that's it. Either way, you got it right that a full size ford is (in my opinion) THE best deal out there. Only trucks are made body- on -frame these days, and these Ford's are the last cars to be manufactured in this strong manner.

My 76 year old neighbor drives a silver 2005 Grand Marquis with 190,000 miles on it, and she loves that car. She just told me the car has a lot more miles left on it, and I didn't argue with her, because I heard that they can easily surpass 400,000 miles if they're well maintained.

My mom has a 2000 Camry and it drives like new. We found a 2000 V6 Solara for my niece and she is still driving it over a year later. My favorite older cars to drive!

Bought a 1990 Nissan Sunny/Sentra for $800, six years ago here in Thailand which had a new paint job and lots of repairs already! Sure I've replaced most of the hoses, plugs, some seals, water pump & etc., but over here parts are cheap and labor is even cheaper. Even had the AC totally redone for $65 including labor. The car gets me there & back every time and hasn't ever failed me!

1995-2000 Nissan Maxima with the 3.0 liter V6. These engines were on Ward's 10 best engines for 5 years in a row and our timing chain. Super reliable I have a very low maintenance. I've had several of them with well over 200,000 miles and no problems. The front crank seal tends to leak with mileage but other than that they will not let you down. And they could bought cheap

I'd say any Maxima since 1988 5speed is awesome car to drive unlike anything else on the road. My wife cried when hers got rear ended 1991 with 181K and no problems whatsoever. Bose sound system was the best on the market. New one, just not the same car as it used to be.

My wife and I had a pre-owned 1993 Sentra and it was great, economical, had good get-up-and-go, and was reliable. GA16DE power plant. A good friend bought two pre-owned late nineties V6 Maximas. One was okay, the other started having electrical problems between the engine and the ECU and got progressively worse. I would say a well cared for nineties Nissan can be a good car, but it isn't as safe a bet as a nineties Toyota.

I had a 2.2 96 camry and would regularly get 30 mpg but it was a manual transmission. I also currently have a 97 Sentra that my family has owned for 20 years. I can honestly say that that Sentra is probably the most reliable car we have ever owned. It currently has 289,000 miles on it and it just won't give up. No check engine light it's been in a crash but still runs just fine. It would be pointless to sell it because I probably will not get anything for it. So I just keep driving it.

Picked up a 1997 Camry LE 2.2 for my son as a starter car. He’s been impressed how reliable and easy they are to work on. So far we’ve replaced VSV sensor, (4) struts, timing belt and regular maintenance. He’s planning to keep this car for awhile until he completes his Navy duty and purchase a 4x4 Tacoma. His buddies in the Navy already bidding for the Camry, great and reliable car to putt around town or drive it for long distance.

Soy Eldiego Did you notice any good differences in performance, or MPG after replacing the VSV? That is one of the parts I plan to change soon. I have one too, and its a really great car to get by. When got it, there were so many issues with it. I was told that after giving it TLC and maintaining, it would drive like a new car(no not a race car). I'm more concerned about the MPG, crucial parts under the hood, and the suspension, more than what the car looks like. I think the downside is the MPG as the vid poster said, and the timing belt if you don't monitor it.

Hardy Joe Did notice some MPG improvement from 23 to 28 MPG after replacing the VSV. Be warned! It’s a pain the arse to change. You will have to drive over 100 miles to for the computer to recognize the new parameters after replacing the VSV or any other emission components. To be honest, after driving 442 miles we averaged almost 32 mpg highway miles. My son and I were impressed. Love that the Camry has a 18 gallon tank for those long drives. My advice to you, is to do a complete tune up, oil change and tranny fluid, air filter, fuel filter and of course a timing belt kit that includes the water pump and idlers even the valve cover gasket. Ours was leaking pretty bad, now it’s all bueno. Oh, if you need to check your compression, it might need to be re-ringed and new valve seals if your oil consumption is high. Good luck on these old gems.

Soy Eldiego I plan on getting the ball joints and control arm done soon as possible(keeps making a clunk noise/wasnt cv or rack and pinion). Wow! I modded the air intake with injen's air intake. It seems that alot of factors could lead to poor mileage and performance. Thanks for the warning. I don't let up on removing the negative before working on the car. My dad was a detailer for toyota so he learn his way around them too. Is it even possible to change the water pump. I know my way around the tranny, oil, and air filter. However, I am not too keen on doing the fuel filter. What about the Oxygen sensors too? About the valve cover, yeah, I had that leaking from the top to the back. So much information on this car. I just read that the map sensor is also crucial. Kept getting this mixed up with the maf sensor. What exactly are the idlers? Also congrats on the mpg gain!

Hardy Joe Good idea to replace your suspension parts along with all 4 struts. Make sure also to replace your inner and outer tie rods, this helps keep the steering tight. After your upgrade, get it aligned to save your tires. We need to replace ours also, been doing some research on Amazon and eBay and see who has the best price on a suspension kit. Suspension Parts are all original and need to be updated. To answer your question, the tensioner and idler keeps tension on the timing belt, since your timing belt was replaced last year I wouldn’t sweat it. Make sure to change it after once it has reached 75,000 or per maintenance schedule. If your check engine light is on, check to see what codes you have to direct on what emission components need to be replaced. This how I knew to replace the VSV, next step will be a new Fuel Sensor per SoCal - Oxygen Sensor in other states. Make sure to replace with the correct sensor per your car emission sticker.

I have a late 2000 Toyota Camry in excellent condition! it is a 2.2 csx model in Australia. which is an upper model with this engine. It has digital aircon bullet proof engine and transmission. I treat her like a hyper car :D. I had to change the head gasket once, and the suspension bushes on the front some belts but other then that no mechanical problems still starts everytime without any hesitation. It is a nice crusing car very quite and smooth. I love the cruise controls on this camry very easy to use. Only complain is she is drinking too much fuel but she is my first car so I love it. I think the next owner will be very lucky with my car in AU.

Most Subaru "head gasket issues" are a symptom, of a dirty AF coolant system. How they are designed, they can get an air lock around the heater core, which prevents the tstat from opening as it never gets the hot coolant. Flushing your coolant system and filling with proper coolant will prevent all these issues from occurring. They are sensitive to overheating which is how the headgaskets get blown so easy. It is an easy fix, but if you dont flush your heater core, and fix the reason for the overheating, then it will blow again. You can create another bypass around the heater core to entirely prevent this problem from ever happening as well. You can buy Subaru's with blown head gaskets, flush the coolant system, and have a great running car because the head gasket was actually fine.

I have a Toyota Camry and I love the car. I paid 3k for a 2000 about 5 years ago. Never had any issues and all I have to do is yearly maintenance and oil changes.

Long live the Camry! I have a 2000 2.2L and it's the most reliable car I've had bar none. BTW I had a similar situation as yours where my timing belt broke. I used your video walk-through to help me fix and replace the water pump along with the oil pump seal and gasket like you mentioned. Runs like a champ picking up where it left off - 310,000km

1990s Camry, there is no substitute.

My father in law has an old Toyota T100 with 1.7 million miles. The mileage went to zero when it hit 1 million. The truck has had 3 engines since he’s owned it, but it’s still damn impressive.

Well done with choosing the Crown Vic as one of the least expensive but most reliable car around. These cars are hidden gems amongst folks that love cars. -Chris

Mississippi Reject....They have their flaws. Mpg could be better. Rear end collision safety could be better. But every Panther we had ran great while we owned it and two were still running great when we sold them. ***We had a 2001 for my son and when he went overseas we sold it for him. ***My 2004 was totaled on the freeway. I was not even scratched, so I immediately bought a 2008 the NEXT DAY. ***We sold the 2008 in Dec to make room for a Mustang convertible. We did very well on the sale price every time. The book value on the 2004 was so good my insurance more than paid for my 2008 from a private party. Informed buyers know the Panther platform and many specifically look for a Grand Marquis or Crown Vic or Town Car. I had 14 parties contact me about my 2008 Grand Marquis LS for sale -- I've sold many cars in my life, including BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Toyota, Chevy and Saturn and that is about the most inquiries I've ever had on a private sale. I found that Grand Marquis cars are usually low mileage, babied, and pampered, unlike CVPI cop cars that run balls out, jump curbs at 40mph and idle for 20+ hours a day. So I disagree with buying a police cruiser...unless you can find a CVPI that was NOT a squad car. The CVPI is a heavy duty barebones pursuit car, but a Grand Marquis is just...........aaaaaahhhhh. I've been very pleasantly surprised with the reliability of the FoMoCo products our family has had. And parts are cheap as hell and easy to get because everyone stocks them. They just run and run, and whatever did go wrong, I could usually fix in the driveway.

ToyHondas are legendary for reliability. I've never owned a Honda but I'm sure they're good. My experience with Toyotas was excellent, as was yours.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the #2 choice. I work on Honda's for a living and the bad automatic transmissions in the 6th gen accords keep me in business. They fail, even if properly maintained, at about 150K miles. DONT BOTHER REPLACING THE DAMNED SOLENOIDS, THAT"S NOT YOUR PROBLEM, THE TRANSMISSION IS JUNK!! For $1500 I'd go with the 94-97 accord or any Civic ever made.

I'd have to say I see a lot of them for sale with 250,000 miles; 300,000 miles, 350,000 miles. SO either the transmission is super cheap and easy to swap out or there's a way to properly maintain the car and drive a long distance. Personally I traded a 99 Honda Accord V6 with 253,000 miles and sold a 98 Accord 2.3 200,000 miles. I still see them driving around. I am not a Honda master tech, but I sure do get under the hood of my Honda's and other car makes for friends.

I drive a 2002 Park Avenue with a 3.8 engine and over 182,000 miles on it. Runs and drives like new. Love it. And the gas mileage is great! 30s on the highway, mid to upper 20s average. Not bad for a full size car.

Great video! This video gave me a lifeline because I got a Toyota camry 97 which had an oil leak. I took it for an oil change last week and the mechanic advised me to change the whole engine or dumb the the car and buy a new one. But this car is a hell of a beast. It moves Super cool. I love it.

Great suggestions, had a 92 Camry that ended up losing compression after finding out it was burning oil too late. Currently in a 2000 3.0L Ranger with over 220k miles with no issues at all

1996 to 98 Chev or GMC, there are a lot of videos on them on KZread. Those are the years I know about, I think especially due to the Vtech motors. You can repair most things yourself, and not too much computer stuff. You can purchase any parts for them, RockAuto and LMC trucks. I love my '96 CK1500 4x4. . Ford are very bad, especially from 2000 to 2016, after that, they're good, but who can afford a newer vehicle.

@@Ram-rm2gz wow, really hard question!!! I use the Honda as primary transportation. It has all the bells and whistles a girl wants. Leather seats etc. The Miata was an anniversary gift. First year they were made and year we were married. Just bought the Tacoma and it reminds me of my favorite. The 2002 Toyota Camry hands down. With maintenance this one lasted me many years. It is very roomy inside, has great gas mileage, low maintenance, and a trunk you can pack with much more than my Honda. Then it was handed down to my son who was in college. He still drives it. He is a professor now.

My first car was Toyota Camry v6 1995. I bought it used and had 123k mileage. I drove another 100k without any issues. Now I’m driving Toyota Avalon 2001 v6. It has 245k mileage and runs like new. definitely Toyota is the best car.
