As an Indian, I can verify that Anand's contribution and impact on Indian Chess is unprecedented. His own city of Chennai now has >30 GMs (mostly kids and youth). A whole generation grew up watching him. He is also a very polite and kindhearted man, contrary to the champions that came before him.

Emphasis on that last sentence. Fischer in particular was extremely hostile toward women and minorities.

I don't know what is more impressive. The sheer amount on Indian GMs inspired by Anand or the fact that Anand is still higher rated than all of them 😂

@@kanekiNamikaze Well, I am not taking away from Gukesh's achievement, but this is more because Anand isn't playing lol. I bet Anand could beat Gukesh in a classical match right now. But the good thing is that Gukesh seems to be only getting stronger with time.

When you say "Chess" in India, everyone thinks of Vishwanath Anand to this very day. His legacy is surmounted in all our memories.

Rewatching these old Levy and Hikaru videos. They were all so good, hope they do stuff again someday. I was so happy Hikaru rated Anand so highly, that guy is really something else. Even now he's still playing at the top level, in his 50s! He's something else in every way.

One thing I can say for Anand (I'm from India) is that he broke into the ranks when the erstwhile Russia/USSR was still THE dominant force in Chess. When I read about how Russian players had a thriving ecosystem that helped them learn, compete and rise up the ranks, Anand's access to tournaments, sponsorships, and strong players (to learn from) was in a much-diminished quality and quantity. (It brings a smile whenever I think that he had to frequent the Tal Chess Club in the Russian embassy in Chennai to improve his game). This to me justifies his ranking 100%.

Norwegian here. I fully agree with Anand being a God of chess. I am proud of Carlsen, of course, but Anand deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest in chesshistory.

Carlsen? Thus far at a classical time control has only beaten an old, disinterested Anand, and Nepo having a nervous breakdown. That's it. Granted Carlsen beat Karjakin and Caruana at trivially short speed chess matches, but that's irrelevant towards deciding the World Chess Championship.

Capablanca was so good that Alekhine hired a Team of grandmasters to help him win the title, Changing the dynamic of the game ( at least its the first I have heard of someone doing that) his games are the greatest teaching tool around (for now and probably forever ), for those reasons I consider him a chess god. Euwe was Lucky that Alekhine was avoiding a rematch with Capablanca

@@prashant5229 I mean.. from what I've seen, a big ego is really something almost all Chess players that I've seen had in them. I don't know if the game itself forces that kind of behavior or trait, but all that aside, Hikaru is really humble if you watch his streams and compare his attitude to other big huge Chess personalities! His Japanese non-confrontational nature and slightly self-conscious behavior is apparent! So putting that in mind, I think he is really humble for a Chess phenomenon!

Lmao, my entire friend-group plays chess now, and its all due to hikaru, and im sure theres hundreds of thousands who were pulled in by hikaru and pogchamps overall. a way to describe Anand in India would be like this : until recently people didn't know Anand as a chess player, but chess as a game which was played by someone called Viswanathan Anand at International level

Fun fact: in the Immortal Game, if Kieseritzky, instead of Na6, moved the light-squared bishop to create an escape for his King, he would have probably saved the game.

Mignon15 well it does say he’s ranking the “legends”. It’s not really possible to rank players on skill because of course players from 2020 would be better than players from 1858. That’s why he’s more talking about their impact on the game of chess.

This disrespected the Chinese player Ding Liren, who Hikaru said was also a strong candidate. Levy seems salty to see Anand up there, these whites just want to see themselves above rest of others 😏 (same applies to Ding or any other asian player to be fair)

I'm just a regular guy that was checking out a chess video. This Hikaru guy is proof you can be amazingly smart and still socially inadequate.

Just watching this now and seeing Ding discussed as 'getting smoked in candidates' is quite funny now - hindsight 20/20 I know

You two playing each other from famous positions was a good idea for a video series.

I live in a corner of the country of India and I still remember when I was just 10 years old and Aanand became the world champion. Only because of this Chess became a part of my childhood

I feel like Mikhail Tal was by far the greatest, especially when we now see the direction chess has gone. We are playing like robots. Mikhail Tal was trying to explore full human potential. Creativity, courage, inspiration.

Capa played almost 100 years ago and still ranks top according to programs, that's a GOAT. Bobby super-inspiring but Karpov already had people wondering if Fischer would have retained 1st place the next year after his tragic retirement.

Take into consideration the fact that Bobby crushed the scene like no one else when he entered the chess world. I mean, how many times have you seen people going 6-0 against top players? He even mopped the frickin floor with then best player Spasky!!

Shamant he had a great run but it was waaay to short run, look at Kasparov, when he was 44 he was the world champion for half of his life, sure fisher was completely dominant, but he retained his title for three years before losing his marbles. He’s a #1 undisputed at best for breaking the Russian curse

@@xa-1274 I agree that kasparov was there to stay, but even he didn't completely outclass his opponents like Bobby did. Maybe(mostly) Fischer would lose against kasparov, but chess is a sport where you can't compare players from different times as it gets built on previous knowledge.

A note to the discussion at 37:40 ish. In India there are 1,3-1,4 billion people. In Norway there are 5 million. So it is not so strange that India have more talents even if the popularity would be the same. In Norway chess has grown, I do not know how many have started playing because of Carlsen but it has certainly become more popular here. And Anand is more than 20 years older than Carlsen, so you will not necessarily have seen the effect in terms of getting through our talents yet. Not to say they ever will, but... The tournaments are broadcasted live on TV.

Max Euwe has also written over 100 chess books (have a couple) and has really been an inspiration for many in the Netherlands

Yeah, I have one of his books too. However, considering all the legends like Keres, Rubinstein etc who weren’t world champions, he’s a bit of a fluke world champion. He’s like the Greece of chess champions :)

Magnus inspired me to enjoy chess more than anything. His apps helped a lot too. I am just a Magnus fanboy I guess.

Magnus is the first player in modern history that I feel treats chess more like sport and less like science. He plays these strange opening choices in order to capitalize on his own strengths as a player, rather than trying to find the theoretically "correct" or "best" opening, if that makes sense. And he is undoubtedly one of the greatest ambassadors of chess to ever live, second to maybe only Kasparov. No one can ever beat Kasparovs Deep Blue moment.

Anand is the only player to have won the world chess championship in tournament, match, and knockout format, as well as rapid time controls. 5 times world champion in classical and 2 times rapid.

I can’t even play chess (nor do I watch it at all - this video just popped up in my feed), but even I know just about everything about Anand’s career. He was/is absolutely massive in India.

Here is my take. First, one can only say which champions stood out relative to the competition at the time. Everything else is mute, as the game changes. Champions who clearly stood out - each in a somewhat different way - include Lasker, Capablanca, Botvinnik, Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen. Fischer was probably the most dominant player ever, but only for a few years. By contrast, Lasker was the world's best player for 20+ years and in the top 3 for 30+ years - unsurpassed to this day. Kasparov combines longevity and level dominance like nobody else, though Carlsen is getting there. Botvinnik was super-dominant in the late 40s and then elite for another 20 years. Capablanca dominated for maybe 10 years - 1915-25 - and brought chess to a new level, he was elite for 20+ years, while having to deal with Lasker before and Alekhine after him. So how do one rate these against one another? It's a matter of perspective. Good arguments speak for Kasparov at the top, but one could also argue Fischer, maybe even Lasker. If you rate Kasparov highly you probably also have a weak spot for Carlsen. If Fischer is your guy you probably rank Capablanca highly too. The next category include Alekhine and Karpov, whose already great achievements would look even greater were it not for the brilliance of their immediate predecessors and successors. Karpov was #1 for 10 years, but without Kasparov he would have dominated world chess for 20+. Similar, Alekhine was the world's strongest also for a decade but was sandwiched between Capablanca and Botvinnik. Anand could be added to this group - he was the world's strongest player for "only" about 3 years or so, but he was elite for 20+, and sandwiched between Kasparov and Carlsen. Hard to do better in the circumstance. In the pre-championship/early championship age, Morphy and Steinitz can’t be overlooked. Morphy was in terms of peak dominance probably even more impressive than Fischer, though of course the scene in the 1850s was very different from the 1960s and 70s. Steinitz's longevity at the top comes close to Lasker/Kasparov/Karpov dimensions. So these are the A-legends of the game if you wish. Then come ‘normal’ world champions like Kramnik, Tal, Smyslov, Petrosian, Spassky, Euwe; and strong non-champions who were a tad unlucky but left their mark on the game: the likes of Caruana, Topalov, Korchnoi, Bronstein, Keres, Reshevsky, Maroczy, Tarrasch, Zukertort. Korchnoi wasn't weaker than Spassky, for example, but was unlucky to peak when Karpov dominated, while Spasski could slip in right before Fischer's period of absolute dominance. Peak Topalov was as strong as peak Anand or peak Kramnik. By contrast, ranking legends on the basis of "who would beat who" compares apples with oranges. Every talented 15 years old who knows how to use chessbase and stockfish knows a 1000 times more than Lasker or Capablanca - and hence would beat them on opening preparation alone. Based on this, my tentative attempt at an all-time ranking based on significance is below - though I have no problem if people come to other results - this isn't rocket science. I'm reasonably comfortable with my top 11, thereafter it becomes murky. This isn't rocket science. 1 Kasparov 2 Carlsen 3 Fischer 4 Morphy 5 Capablanca 6 Lasker 7 Botvinnik 8 Karpov 9 Alekhine 10 Steinitz 11 Anand (from here with commentary) 12 Smyslov - world's strongest player in first half of the 1950s. In the mix for another 30 years 13 Tal - somewhat erratic but in the mix for 25 years. World's strongest around 1960 14 Kramnik - never ranked #1 but took the title from Kasparov, elite for some 15 years 15 Petrosian - 6 years as world champion, strongest player 1962-64 16 Topalov - FIDE champion, three-way rivalry for #1 with Anand and Kramnik 2005-10 17 Korchnoi - in the mix for some 30 and #2 for 10 years, incl. late 1970s (Karpov's reign) 18 Tarrasch - world's strongest around 1890, then second fiddle to Lasker for 10+ years 19 Spassky - elite for 10+ and in the mix for almost 30 years, world champion in the late 1960s 20 Zukertort - #2 behind Steinitz 1874-84 21 Reshevsky - elite from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s, in the mix for #1 twice 22 Bronstein - briefly the strongest player in 1950/51, elite for 10+ years 23 Euwe - elite in the late 1930s and world champion, in the mix 1930-50 24 Caruana - elite for the past 9 years, several years #2 behind Carlsen 25 Keres - elite in the late 1940s and late 1950-s, in the mix for almost 30 years Honorable mention: Maroczy, Anderssen, Gunsberg, Kolisch, Aronian, Paulsen, Rubinstein, Fine, Najdorf, Blackburne, Pillsbury, Bogoljubov.

one thing for sure is that India takes it's sports very seriously and always inspired by champions - Anand to chess is almost as of legend to Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket, and Sachin was nicknamed 'god' so perfectly apt

I have to say I feel like Hikaru has grown a lot since then. He has some awkward moments in this (not bad, just a bit off). He is a lot more fluid and adept at presenting and interacting back and forth nowadays. I wish they'd make some more content like this in the future.

Chess is booming in India and chess will see it's golden days if it goes to it's peak popularity in India. Then u will understand why Vishy is God of chess!

I think you'd have to say Fabi and Hikaru are both in the "Great + Unlucky" because Magnus exists. Perhaps "Great + Lucky" should be lower than "Great + Unlucky".

Its crazy to me how Hikarus mind works. Levy: the Tiers are messed up, Hikaru: let me give you a history lesson how WW1 started.

Can you do a tier list of raw player strength? (Which will mostly be modern players). But I always find it more effective to learn from the strongest, not the “most legendary”. Learn from the people who are the most accurate in the most difficult positions. Find tactics that work at the highest modern level. Maybe also people like Dubov who understand the relation of piece value relative to activity and tempo and still competes at the highest level.
