Glitch Productions Responds to Controversy

Фильм және анимация

So the other day i made a video about the glitch productions controversy. Since my video there was a bunch of new info so i think it’s worth discussing it. Kevin, glitch’s ceo ended up being doxxed and posted a full apology on the glitch twitter account. I’ll discuss what happened and then give my thoughts at the very end as well.
Before we start, i highly recommend watching my first video. It’s 4 minutes long and is important for context. However for a quick rundown. The voice actor of tari in smg4, celeste was recast with no warning from glitch. She found out via twitter and as a result animeamerica resigned as smg2. A discord response was made by a glitch staff member who worked with both of them which complicated things. Soon after some ex employees came forward with anonymous testimonies about their negative experiences working at the company. So as a result fans were extremely unhappy with the situation, leading to a mass boycott across various social media websites.

"They didn't explain the recasting" And they shouldn't, unless Celeste says it's okay to talk about. The voice director flat-out said he wouldn't discuss the reasoning without her permission. This is private. The audience does NOT have an innate right to everybody's dirty laundry.

I take it you haven't seen the last video? Celeste gave us a rundown of what she got told, which was a confusing mess about her not seeming available enough even though she's never not been available or even missed a deadline. So, that's why people (and celeste probably) might want some more clarification on why?

To be honest I don’t really care about why she was fired. If she was fired for no reason, that seems highly unlikely to me, but that is very unprofessional on Glitch Productions’ part. It’s more than likely they are keeping the reasoning for the firing a secret because they know that if the actual reason got out idiots on Twitter would have even more of a field day with it and become more unhinged. Twitter dipshits need to shut the hell up and leave Glitch Productions alone. It ain’t that big a deal.

    1. Honestly Glad Kevin took the Time to write out the apology and didn't rush it. I'm also glad he held himself accountable for any bad experiences ex-employees had. (This is how an apology should be handled. An apology isn't just saying sorry.) 2. I personally think the reason Kevin left put the Celeste situation might mean that He is working things out with her in private and is trying to come up with a solution. Personally i hope thats hwat he's doing and I hope Celeste is compensated or given her role back? 3. While I understand why people felt the need to Boycott Glitch I personally didn't see that as the best solution seeing how doing that would cost a good amount of people their Jobs which in my opinion is a bit extreme. 4. I personally don't believe all the Anonymous sources as it could most likey just be trolls taking advantage of the situation to try and bring Glitch down, unless some of these sources are Public or show proof I choose not to believe them. All in all I personally think the response was handled very well and I hope the Situation with Celeste is being taken care of however I think its best to remain neutral on the situation and hold Glitch accountabke for what happened with Celeste and Possible past employees.

I’m so sorry Kevin got Doxxed it’s pretty fucked up by whoever did this. Many companies have different departments. What happens in one department isn’t the CEOs fault automatically. What’s important it’s that the CEO and managers deal with the situation presented. But as a CEO he’s not all knowing and has to be notified. Even so probably Jasmine fired Tari’s voice actor without the correct process as she claims and this made everyone who loves toxicity jump in.

Personally I think that the Celeste recast was an honest mistake, and even if it wasn't, in my opinion they don't owe Celeste the role, maybe they just wanted to give the opportunity to another VA because the character would be in a very different vibe than the original (Totally Comedy), it would be a different story if Celeste had been harassed or not paid, but the problem is that they didn´t contact her to rehire her, and while it may have hurt her pride and feelings as a VA, it isn´t illegal or unforgivable in my opinion . I think Kev doesn't owe the fans a "response" about Celeste's recast, since this is between Snap4 and Celeste, but I really appreciated her letter, it felt sincere.

Really think someone who's life is now in danger is going to be inclined to be kind and helpful? No. They should be angry and scared. The public needs to learn how to cope with not knowing about everything and respect the privacy and boundaries of others. Consent is key to many things, this being included. If the situation was a story similar to a lot of big named companies where workers are essentially are given no autonomy and worked like machines, I can see wanting the public to know as much as possible to raise awareness of awful conditions - but that’s not what this is.

Controversy aside, I think it's amazing how Kevin and Luke started off by making silly Mario videos and then founded a full blown animation studio. I mean come on, they've got an ex-Blue Sky Studios animator on their side, if that doesn't define "*actual animation studio*", I don't know what does! Hope they can keep going and don't get demotivated by the controversy, Twitter can be a bitch most of the time...

Using meggy as an example I think they try to use voice actors that are in use on glitch and plus them thinking, she wasn’t gonna be available anymore thought it would be time to replace her. I don’t know how she wouldn’t of known about, though I think something was just miscommunicated.

Form what I heard someone said celeste wasn’t available so glitch never talked to her to confirm if it was true I think it was just a huge mistake and about the not treating animators right I don’t think it necessary harass/ boycott glitch for some that happened years ago yes I’m sorry to the animators that feel over worked but I watched glitches when it started and it’s shows used to come out once a week and only with around 8-12 episodes which a year breaks from new content so I believe the over worked this but glitch was a new company at the time with no experience owning a animation studio and now glitch gives their animations plenty of time to work on episodes I feel like it a little unnecessary to slap them on the wrist for some they already worked on improving if they still overworked the animation murder drones episode 7 and 8 would have came out already

Why are these creative fields seen as any different? It is not anyone else's business but the people involved.

Depends, because many of them probably either aren’t as “skilled” or experienced as animators in a professional (non indie) studio, and they also might not have as many staff as them either, which I heard might have been the case for the HR department (which apparently didn’t even have a manager, although they started looking for one recently).

Regardless of what they did I still like their content. Now I'm not defending them or anything cause what they did was bad, But to people complaining about "Creator's you like being bad people" You are valid to feel upset when a creator that makes something you like ends up as a bad person but it all comes down to stopping the common pattern of putting creators on a pedastal And trust me, I've been there, but sometimes the best thing to do is to remember that YOU DON'T KNOW THE CREATOR PERSONALLY, no matter how kind or nice they are or no matter how good their work is. You can like their work or casually speak to them with praise but never put creators you've never met personally on a pedastal of "they make my favorite thing so they MUST be a good person". It just sets you up for a bad future, no matter if a creator ends up "a bad person" or not.

I hate how Doxxing despite it being a VERY ILLEGAL crime, is just used carelessly and practically like blackmail, it’s stupid. People are becoming bold for no reason and I wish people took it very seriously. And by serious, I mean FACE the consequences for even doing it. I think people have gotten away with it for so long, it’s just done without thought. Also to add, I do feel for the brothers, because really this is actually a common mistake for starting companies. I believe it’s because it’s an indie studio, with pretty good ideas and shows, AND people are dicks enough to compare to others like with Lackidaisy and Helluva Boss. People out Glitch on a pedestal and treated it like it could do no wrong. But everyone is human. Humans make mistakes, it they can learn,

Those aren't CEOs and managers who are roughed up by years of working within the industry. They aren't perfect. This happens. Recast could happen for many reason. Money, time, anything...it happens! (Things could be improved if the law actually protected workers, right? Like in my country, where you have to be notified two months before being let go by law??) and sometimes, esp. when companies go from zero budget to "yay we have money now!" They go a bit crazy. This wasnt a good decision. No way! Glitch is at fault for how they handled it. But it's not a reason to cancel them. They aren't netflix or amazon, just a small company that is still learning and growing. Give them time before y'all decide...

Because the voice actor wasn’t made aware about it until fans noticed the change in the episode itself. According to the voice director, they merely forgot to let her know, which had yet to be disproven. Then the VA herself came out and said the the REASON she was replaced had something to do with availability, despite her saying she had no issues in the past being available to record new lines. It’s just a bit of a messy situation, but I feel as long as her not being notified WAS nothing more than a legitimate mistake, I say we let it go.

No, she had a problem with not being told that she was replaced to begin with until after the replacement was revealed, and that the supposed reason she was replaced to begin with didn’t make sense (something about availability, even though she never had any problems in the past with being able to record new voice lines). I do not think Glitch or those in charge of this stuff should be labeled as bad guys based on what we currently know, but the voice actress had every reason to be upset about this, especially since she seemed to love voicing the character.

Like it's insane how fast someone announce something great and then shortly after, they received the first Hate Comments. I don't get the Points why People are always need to put Hate on everything? Like isn't every other Problem enough? And I mean some People have negative Experience with some Companies and some have great. And if they haven't enough Experience with that Kidn of Stuff, it's totally fine. Learnign makes Progress. So I think People overreact too much today. One good Thing and you see always so much Hate. If you don't like it, either describe it why you don't like it and do not put some Words together, thats full of Hate or just keep it for yourself.

Honestly, I do think this is a case of someone forgot, from all that I’ve read on it Glitch is doing what some call cleaning house or reorganization, which If it’s as much as they claim can cause a lot of chaos in upper management especially when you’re adding hr as the indie way gets thrown out the window when hr is involved, likely there were jobs and assignments that got switched around, and the job of telling Celeste got thrown somewhere and forgotten, thinking it had been done they probably continued the va recast, and honestly the reason might not be fair or it might be the availability issue as all we have to go on for that are the words of Celeste and her friend Robyn or Anime America, who also threw more oil on the fire by saying they didn’t believe the apology, which is totally fair and valid for them to do, but honestly you do have to take the words of past employees with a grain of salt especially without physical proof because Glitch being professional hasn’t released the reason why they are past employees and nor are they supposed to unless that person has told them they could, so while Celeste has said the reason why, unless she explicitly tells glitch they can say why she was fired it’s not something they can do silly nilly, because honestly everyone in this situation is a person, and people make mistakes, even horrible ones like this, they can misinterpret things and things can slip people’s minds

  • @manen2391

    @manen2391

And on the whole availability thing, if Glitch did fire her with that reason in mind, when someone has a kid or another job let alone both, it’s innocent enough to think oh this person might not be as available and without the rest of the situation it would seem more valid a reason, because they might be more exhausted, might not be able to do the job properly, availability isn’t always based on if you can show up, it’s if you can show up and do quality work without being overworked, and in a company adding hr, it might have seen like the right move to find someone more available , and no I’m not taking sides but honestly to me and all the information available it really does read as a horrible mistake, that was followed by a disastrous misunderstanding
