Glaze Tests pt 1 - Tiki Technical Tuesday 36
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Strap on your respirator and be ready for anything: we’re gonna test some glazes! This week I share the painstaking process of selecting a production glaze for the Volcanic Vapors mugs. Glaze is a tricky beast (at least is is for me) - its a critical part of the process, and I find it the most unpredictable.
As always, put questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer. PLEASE subscribe if you haven’t yet done so - it means the world to me. Thank you for watching!

Absolutely amazing. Love these Master Classes in tiki mug creation. I now hold all of my mugs in much greater reverence.

Thank you! Mugs are a lot of work 😄
Lol your face when the kiln opened. That’s how I feel every time!

It was very difficult for me to film that - kiln opening is a very emotional time 😅
I can't thank you enough for making these videos! I'm an illustrator but have always had a fascination for ceramics (one of the lucky kids in elementary that got to make super wonky bowls haha) and would one day LOVE to work with ceramics. Your videos have been super eye opening and your demeanor is so delightful to watch. I had no idea you could spray glazes, and better yet there is a glitter glaze?! Thank you for your amazing Tiki Technical Tuesdays, looking forward to next week!

Thank you so much - and I didn’t know there was a glitter glaze either! It was a fun discovery a few months ago, and I’m happy to have a project to use it on 😄
OMG! I just died and went to heaven with that glitter glaze! I love it so much!

VanTikiStudio worth it!
Another amazing TTT! Like everyone else said, “That glitter!” Man, you could do so many colors on the lava part ! A blue or a purple would be rad too. I’m glad you share all this behind the scenes stuff. Really shows what goes into your mugs 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Wow, thank you!
I have been going through this playlist in reverse to catch up on all the Technical Tuesdays I have missed, but didn't know if you were curious but there is an actual technique you did but typically done with painted miniatures (still learning the nuances of that topic too :P) but it is called Zenithal Priming when you did the top angled gradient spraying. I do not mean or intend to mansplain or anything, but you've given so much value and insight already, that I felt I could at least give you a nugget of info back. :D

Gotta say, I’m torn between the two. Both fabulous as always!

I think both will get used - along with a few more combos 🤞
Dang! Those turned out fantastic! Very impressed with the gradient effect you achieved here.

Fantastic video. Thanks for all the work you do, with the mugs you make to the videos you produce. I'll throw another vote to the teal/chartreuse glaze. Orange/red looks awesome too but doesn't "pop" as much. A lavender/deep purple would be killer!

Thank you! I’m gonna try the red again with a red/yellow combo. Lavender is a great idea!

First, this mug is looking awesome and I’m amazed at the crazy level of labor. The passion for your craft always shines through in the work. Second, I’m curious to see how you improved on the masking since you mentioned those first attempts were unnecessarily fiddly :)

Thank you! As to the masking, we’re still (!) doing tests, but we’ve gotten the process much smoother. I’ve changed up the tape I use to cut the mask edge (to vinyl tape) and am using a painter’s masking gin to roll out butcher paper with tape attached that really speeds things up
Love the glitter! ❤️

Can’t wait these look amazing. That’s it just take all my money. Thanks for a cool insight into this. I love technical Tuesday. When things are back to normal will you do a tiki summer camp where we make our own mugs. Just saying....

VanTiki summer camp would be great!
you can add some food coloring in your glaze so you can tell if the inside or any area has been glazed or not. The food coloring will burn out and not effect the glaze. I do this with my white and transparent glazes.

thank you! That is brilliant!
Glitter glaze?!?!? Ugh. In love, where could I find it or a recipe? You’re work is amazing

The glaze you seek is Amaco Cosmic Tea Dust 🤫
Love the glitter. Both of these are amazing. How do you even begin to choose a favorite? Maybe glaze half the mugs red/orange and half blue/green but all of them should have the glitter top and bottom. :) IMO

Good question! I think the plan is to do the edition in multiple random colors - at least that's the plan for now :)
I'm extremely surprised to see that when you peeled the tape off that the glaze didn't go with it. And also that you didn't plug the opening to stop any over spray from getting inside.

I actually wanted a bit of overspray to carry inside - as I figure the interior color of the "bubble" should reflect the exterior :)
