It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Stephen, who sadly lost his life 9th February 2018. Out of respect I would ask that all comments on this video are kept kind and polite. Anything disrespectful will be deleted. Stephen was a kind hearted soul, so full of life with boundless energy and generosity. He will be greatly missed. RIP.

I'm an American from the eastern U.S. and I've been working on a Scottish accent for a play; this is one of the best videos I've found for practice due to the way it breaks out individual vowel transformations, providing multiple examples (with repetition!) each time. I also found the interplay between the host and the guest to be utterly charming. It was quite a blow to read afterward of Stephen's passing: all I can say is that his sweetness and personality are clearly still affecting people years later and I'm grateful for getting to be a small part of this small bit of his legacy.

Anna, Thanks for this one. I had an auntie (who emigrated to and lived in Melbourne) who had a very broad Glaswegian accent, much broader than Stephen's but it sounds similar. She had lots of idioms; when we visited as kids we had lots of fun trying to understand her. When she visited us in the early 2000's one of my friends couldn't understand some of what she said, much to Aunt B's amusement, but from long experience I could. So you do pick up the lingo and can understand the accent. One of my favourite words was "napper", as in “Ave you hurt your napper?" (Have you hurt your head?). She was born in the 30's but "napper" is still current as a cousin over there used it in a post the other day. That's why I decided to use it here. Northern Scottish isn't as broad as Southern Scottish if my relatives are anything to go by and some of the idioms are different.

Napper is a great one which I use. 'Pus' or 'nut' are great alternatives. Though 'pus' means face e.g you can tell someone to 'shut their pus', that means shut your face (shut up)

It seems the further north we go, the more difficult the accents get :D. This is my favourite so far, and also the most difficult one, followed by the Yorkshire, which hasn't been covered yet (i thought I could understand English until I watched Emmerdale...). I hope you give us a Yorkshire accent video soon, Anna! :D

So, like all Yanks celebrating a Thanksgiving dinner, our conversation naturally turned toward Martin Patience's accent, which led us here. We were delighted by this installment, and the back and forth between you and Stephen. It was only afterward that we saw your comment about Stephen's passing. This guy was such a great sport! I recently found out I have 6% of Scottish DNA when I had not a clue. and the DNA comes from my three times great Nan from the side of my father. she was actually born in Northern Ireland I thought she was Irish but apparently she comes from Scottish descent. I was so happy to find out I have Scottish DNA I have Scottish people in great regards as the ones I met were such nice people. One day I would like to visit Scotland and just sit at the pub and hear people talking to one another to see if I can understand anything. I honestly think Scottish people are very kind-hearted and I'm very proud to carry in my blood Scottish DNA. Thank u Stephen. And thanks for this video. And thank u Great Great Great Nan.

Point of info: the dress rules for the kilt, which actually come from Scottish battalions of the British Army, are that underwear is not worn except if you intend to dance or compete in sport. The reason is purely practical, as you'd know if you had ever tried to use the bathroom in an 8-yard kilt.

Its interesting that he has essentially doctored his enunciation on camera to better try to accentuate and match you. He's almost doing a scottish version of 'proper' English, but you can start to hear his proper enunciation whenever he adlibs during the shoot. In future it might be worth having some unscripted conversation with each accent to obtain some unmodified content to give a clean 'sample' :) I run RPG games and use these kind of videos to try to get my head around the more technical parts of accents. Love this content on your channel and would like to thank you very much for producing it so well and using the proper technical language to describe the enunciation. Hopefully I'll start to get better at it XD
