I was thinking about music trends for trailers. About 3-4 years ago, trailers for big action/sci-fi/fantasy movies all had rap in them. 😅 It's my favourite genre of music - rap , but... Not to promote fantasy movies 🫠 Clowns 🕺 Thank you , James. Great video 😎

I’m going to be sassy here, but that’s disingenuous. It’s scored by Harry Gregson Williams. They likely didn’t have any control over the trailer cut, so you won’t have to worry about Kanye in the final film. That would be insane.

Many thanks! Hopefully this flick will at a minimum spark some interesting discussions about Ridley Scott later this year.

Let’s not forget that the original Gladiator’s marketing material used that terrible Kid Rock song, let’s hope the trend of “Movie better than marketing” continues for Ridley Scott.

The trailer I remember fondly was the teaser which included "The Anvil of Crom" from 'Conan the Barbarian' but your point is very well taken.

Funny Gladiator moment, at the end fight when the replacement commander yells Sheath Your Swords! In Latin Sheath is VAGINUS.

I gotta watch The Duelists and that Extended Kingdom of Heaven because I remember being kind of disappointed with movie.

Loved your enthusiasm for Gladiator, it’s one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately the this trailer didn’t catch me - but it could’ve been the music.

At a minimun, perhaps an entirely new generation of fans will discover the 2000 original. It's aged really well.

Looks interesting and I will watch since I’m a sucker for history. But I feel I watched the entire film in this 3 minute trailer.

Imagine my glee Maximus shouting STRENGTH AND HONOR and that's the Celtic Definition of Brian.

The Last Dual was actually great. Scott is a hit or miss type of director... Not consistant at all.

When Azz of the FNT Fellowship saw this Female Archer with the Arrow sticking out of her, he said How in the Hell did she manage to shoot herself with an Arrow? Was she holding it backwards??

Any thoughts on Those About to Die, the Anthony Hopkins Gladiator show on Peacock. I just started it but I was entertained!

This looks to be an interesting sequel because we all know, I’m not a fan of Hollywood pumping out too many remakes and reboots because I’m just getting tired. Leave the classics alone. But I’m looking forward to Gladiator 2. It took two decades to make a sequel to the OG Giadiator, the movie that won Best Picture and Russell Crowe an Oscar for Best Actor. The movie still holds up well. I think Ridley Scott has a lot of gas in the tank left until he calls it a career. He’s 86.

My issues with the film is did we really need a sequel I was happy with the first one it told its story

Might be a one-sided battle but I'm hoping Gladiator II has a few surprises for all of us.

The Anvil in Crom pumps me up every time. It’s my song of choice when making Steak and eyes at breakfast! Wait. The main protagonist is Lucius?!? It’s been a minute but wasn’t Lucius the son of the Princess Lucilla? Um, why is he a slave? This trailer is very disorienting.

I might have to use the Anvil of Crom from now on when opening my mail or doing my laundry just to make the drudgery less painful. As far as the plot goes, all I know is what's on Wikipedia: Over two decades after the events of Gladiator (2000), Lucius-the grandson of Rome's former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla-lives with his wife and child in Numidia. Roman soldiers led by general Marcus Acacius invade, forcing Lucius into slavery. Inspired by the story of Maximus, as depicted in the original 2000 film, Lucius resolves to fight as a gladiator while opposing the rule of the young emperors Caracalla and Geta.

@@geekinwithJamesHancock Doesn’t make any sense. No Roman Emperor would ever fuck with the family of a former Roman Emperor or face the wrath of all the first families of Rome and Civil War would erupt. I guess, Ridley is like, “I’ll find any excuse just to do film.” 😆

I heard they’re remaking “A Fistful of Dollars.” And I was like, no. Please, no. Nobody is asking for a remake of Clint Eastwood’s beloved 60-year-old classic.

i think a great part of the leading man quality which was in the original is missing here... the sound of crowes voice alone was so great... mescal has none of that aura

I’m interested in the movie but the trailer was okay. 👍🏻. Terrible music choices & too long IMO. Here’s hoping 🤞🏻 for the best.

That plot sounds like the original 🤨

my thoughts: why would the lady still watch these arena battles, didn't she had enough? hero looks too cocky and angry, jared leto's twins are meant to be hated but are just movie props, I think Denzel should be less of what we are used to and new, hero's seems to get double crossed in the battle, enprisioned and battling his way into revenge on the arena - is this enough to be griping ? - will pascal be the villain or the actual hero?

Ridley is certanly taking a risk with a sequal to one of the best movies ever made . I have a feeling he has more to lose than win with this one. And please keep the F&F music out of Gladiator.

I'll also say tbe last great Ridley Scott movie was The Martian. It was a very well made, suprisingly solid film starring future Hollywood snowflake Matt Damon.

Kingdom of Heaven extended cut was a superior film to Gladiator in my opinion

Denzel Washington's NY accent took me out of it. It doesn't fit in. 👎👎

Perhaps but at this stage in the game I think he just plans on shooting movies until his body gives out. And I'm sure there are plenty of his peers at his age who wish they had the same luxury.

Hopefully just trailer music, and we don’t get ghetto rap on the actual score. As for music taking one out of the moment - Ridley did it for me in the original when he used a Zulu war chant ripped directly from Zulu. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the Germanic horde rocking it. Nearly ruined the film for me.

Those MBA toting marketing mavens at Paramount committed the exact same sin that Universal did with the first "Pacific Rim: Uprising" trailer. They utilized a remix version of "Momma Said Knock You Out" as its musical backdrop. An epic fail, imo since the song had absolutely zero to do with the movie they were promoting. .. If they thought they were being clever they weren't. It's so upfront in the audio mix that it got in the way of the dialogue. In both cases, this kind of cleverness for its own sake, usually backfires. Like this trailer with its Kanye West-Jay-Z distraction, it jarred me out of what was visually going on in it with a "WTF?!" reaction. Why, do these people insert music which is tonally inappropriate for what's onscreen into their trailers? Certainly this film doesn't need this kind of an attempt to make it more contemporary. Dumbass move, ya mooks!!!

Napoleon definitely has raised more concerns as opposed to putting them to rest. But the battle scenes in Napoleon were pretty great so I hope at a minimum this movie will deliver some killer combat sequences.

Definitely seems to be the most consistent response to the trailer. I'll see the movie but whoever cut this trailer should get demoted.

Hopefully this is not yet another crushing dud of a film like Napoleon was. Scott has been on a real cold streak lately with the Last Duel being nearly unwatchable with it's dopey structure and every single actor miscast in the film. Let's see if the Roman spectacle rollercoaster theme park ride movie will be a home run for him for a change.

He'll be 87 years old this Fall so I'm hoping Ridley can deliver one final major spectacle that will make us all remember why we've been following his career all these decades.

Hopefully, that music does not make it into the final movie. 🙄

100% James! That music ruined the trailer!

Why did we need rap music in this trailer? A rousing score will do the trick just fine. That music choice might actually make some folks pass on this one or at least wait until streaming to watch it. I guess the powdery face guys are supposed to be Geta and Caracalla, brothers and dueling emperors of their day, or alternately Claudius and Caligula. I should just look it up. Not sure what the powdery face bit is about other than obvious masculine vs non-masculine virtue signaling.

It's difficult to say if this trailer is going to get some asses in theatre seats, but your guess is as good as mine - particularly after the disastrous NAPOLEON. Don't forget that since GLADIATOR there's been a glut of these bloody muscleman sword-and-sandals on TV and at the movies, so the thirst for peplums has been definitely quenched since Scott released GLADIATOR. My first impression on watching GLADIATOR was not as satisfying as seeing the classic 70mm epics that came before it like SPARTACUS, CLEOPATRA or THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. This sequel prevue doesn't excite me in the least because there are some rather stupid looking scenes - like the rhino bit and the obvious Caligula character. I was much more anxious for Oliver Stone's ALEXANDER or Wolfgang Petersen's TROY than I am for this latest Ridley Scott spectacle with more hip needle-drop muzak.

Tough to compete with the classic directed by fellas like Stanley Kubrick and Anthony Mann. They were giants among insects.

This movie is a guaranteed flop if this soundtrack with Jay Z‘s voice pops up in this film. No matter how good the actual film is.

I'll agree Jay Z music is horrible in ads. Kanye not crazy about his music alone being used in movie trailers, lately the mostly inappropriate hip hop and almost as bad, terrible remakes of classic rock songs (usually done by Billie Eilish) have become both disgustingly overused! But Jay Z, it's like the music is comparing his drug deal....I mean prolific rapper/mogul career to being a Roman Gladiator's journey. Drug dealers turned rappers are not Gladiators! "Fuck Maximus" was not all over the halls of the Marcy projects in Brooklyn but "Fuck Jay Z" was, lol! I've heard from cops who worked around there. Also this trailer and review was interrupted by that other annoying Jay Z backgrounded ad for Google ! "Allow me to introduce myself, my name is.....yeah go away! I hate Google even more then Jay Z.

Fucking love this song, but cannot stand the use of these slowed down orchestral covers regardless of whether or not I like the song. I’d obviously prefer the score for the actual movie, but even the original tune would be far fucking better than this shit. Visuals look good though, enough to make me cautiously optimistic.
