release date, cast, synopsis, and trailer
Yes, a sequel to the 2000 film "Gladiator" is currently in development. The film, titled "Gladiator 2," is set to be directed by Ridley Scott, who also directed the original movie. The script is being written by David Scarpa, with Scott also serving as a producer alongside Michael Pruss and Doug Wick.
In June 2022, it was announced that Paul Mescal, known for his role in the TV series "Normal People," was in negotiations to star in the lead role. The story is expected to follow Lucius, the nephew of Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film), as he learns the truth about his father's murder and comes to know Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the first movie).
As of April 2023, the film is still in the pre-production stage, with no official release date announced yet. However, the involvement of Ridley Scott and the progress in casting suggest that the project is moving forward, and fans can expect to see "Gladiator 2" in theaters in the coming years.

Disagree, but it was a good movie. The opening scene was well done (despite some questionable historical things), I always point to that as a great depiction of 2nd-3rd Century warfare-I think it makes up for its historical inaccuracies simply by being powerfully done-I think a scene like that has the potential to get people interested in history. The rest of the movie is good as well though I never thought it was quite the masterpiece everyone else seemed to. I also thought Kingdom if Heaven and even Robin Hood were pretty decent too. Article says "LONG AWAITED SEQUEL" ?? I'm really curious what that statement is based on. I certainly didn't reach the end of the gladiator movie and thought "can't wait for the sequel". Protagonist dies, villain dies, supporting character (gladiator owner) also dies, all arcs are closed. It's not at all left open for further exploration. The story of gladiator was concluded, and it was fine like that. I never thought that it could have a sequel and frankly I would not care to see a follow up to this movie where Maximus is not the gladiator and Commodus is not the emperor.

The ancient protagonists even speak about horse races and politics in ancient Greek in some scenes. The movie is utterly stupid and bad, but I love it, it's just dumb fun. So, mr Scott has some material if he needs a zombie apocalypse movie in the ancient era :D
2:34 The idea that Ridley Scott would put Templars in a film about the Roman Empire circa 200 AD is not a bit far fetched to be honest. 10:58 In the first film he is tattooed on his left arm with SPQR which he later removes by using a sharp rock. That I can remember, no slaves were branded in the 2000 film. 13:09 Having? Have you seen Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood. Scott hasn't found a historical period he can't jack up. Now, full transparency. I was only a novice student of the Roman empire when I saw Gladiator. I loved the film, though I could see some of the inaccuracies. Execution was great. THere is a lot to love. Over the past 24 years I've become much more of a student of Roman history, and while the inaccuracies are still glaring, I can still enjoy the film. THat is not the case with Kingdom of Heaven. Which I loathe with every fiber of my being. Ridley Scott has been on a death spiral of bad films since Gladiator's release. Part of why I decided to do what I do is because there is such a shortage of good storytelling these days and, while my own storytelling capabilities aren't that great, what I'm really hoping is that by making very old Japanese folktales more accessible, someday some actually creative people will watch them and be inspired to write and make things far better than both my own work and the constant stream of mediocre/terrible nonsense that is constantly shoved down our throats. Admittedly it's a bit of a delusion of grandeur but it's worth a try at least.

I asked ChatGPT what Gladiator 2 will be about and from what I understand, it will be some kind of mix between the first Gladiator and the movie "The Crow". Here's what it said: _"Gladiator 2" delves into the gripping tale of Maximus' resurrection by a crow, one year after his death in the Coliseum where he killed Commodus. He paints his face in a black and white mask and embarks on a journey fuelled by vengeance. Tracking down the soldiers who slaughtered his family, he blurs the lines between ancient Rome and modern-day Gothic noir, weaving a narrative that promises the same epic scale and emotional depth as its predecessor while adding a haunting twist that will captivate audiences anew._ 😁

Didn't Nick Cave write a script for Gladiator 2 where Russel Crowe came back from the dead? I hear it was unhinged

Ah, yes: Gladiator 2: Christ Killer, you can find the Screenplay on the internet
. You know what would make a good Gladiator film. A movie about the life of Marcus Attilius OR a fictional movie about a gladiator that won their freedom and joined the army.
Aliens are historically accurate... Somewhere

Movie announcer voice: "Gladiator 2. This time, it's personal!"
What's so frustrating, is that this era (the Severan Dynasty/ Crisis of the 3rd Century) is so very under-represented - I've seen one or two documentaries about Elagabalus, & I think I might have seen one about Caracalla, so I think it would actually be interesting to set a movie about Ancient Rome in this era, rather than the early Empire or Late Republic- but after suffering through Napoleon - I'm not sure I could put myself through that again. Don't get me wrong- flaws & all, 'Gladiator' is a classic- but I feel like I've been burned far too many times -- had someone like my guy Peter Weir made the movie, I know; 1) the flaws would be minimal, & 2) it would not dramatically affect the quality of the story, nor my enjoyment of it. Some people excel at making brilliant movies interweaving history & drama, using the one to enhance the other - & some people, will sacrifice the one for the other- because they think history should be altered to fit their story...

Maximinus Thrax. A story that reads more like fiction than fact -- a giant (like Andre the Giant) barbarian who rises through the ranks, takes the empire for himself, proves that even as an old man he's a powerful fighter. Then someone else proclaims the self emperor, the Senate approves it -- an eclipse is seen across the Mediterranean. The pretender is dead before Maximinus hears he's been deposed. OK, it all ends in squalor and betrayal, but until the end it's as cinematic a story as there could be. Since he served under Elagabalus they can even get their DEI points in.

Elagabalus was one of the last keepers of the omphalos stone also called Ben Ben Stone or the holy Grail. There are even coins minted with it on them.
awesome Vid, love your work Metatron
In the name of Independence Day 2....LET'S GET IT ON!
All female zombie gladiators VS hopeless white men, that is a movie for 2024.
Good to see you back with your wonderful dry humor! Love from 🇸🇪🇵🇱!
Commodous did really fight in the arena though.😅 There is some basis for his movie shenanigans.
Baboons are actually omnivores…
Ngl I'd watch the hell out of zombie apocalypse gladiator 2

At least they'd have good reason for not using the zed-word.
One of the reported scripts for Gladiator 2 had Russell Crowe being transported to the year 2030. In 2030 Crowe's character would be rejuvenated to a younger healthier body. In 2030 he'd fight in underground MMA events. His love interests would be beautiful Greek women who had been transported from a few centuries before his time.
When are we to expect Shogun E2 review? Are you planning it at all? Or are you planning to review series as a whole? I loved your E1 reaction.
All Metatron is good Metatron, but angry snarky Metatron is best!
"do what" in a London accent cracked up!! 🤣😆
I remember THAT video. Will watch it again for a refresher. Took a quick look at trailers. Saw the Tmplars, a couple of knights jousting, and I do believe another flashing scene had Samurai.
God bless you and your work sir Metatron 💙💙💙❤❤❤
I love the period: Pescennius Niger, Claudius Albinus, Severus and all. Throw in Caracalla and Geta and wow. Then I remember it's a Ridley Scott project and the enthusiasm dies.
First I heard of a sequel, Ridley wanted Maximus resurrected to be an assassin and... kill Jesus before the crucifixion. Russell gave a hard pass on "Gladiator 2: Christ Killer" 😂
I’m sick at home with flu and feel awful but thank you for making me laugh so hard I almost choked on my cough! I love your videos, always so accurate! I agree 100% with your analysis of Gladiator 2
No new ideas. Good then that I have 1000s of hours of content from the 1950s to the early 2000's to fall back on.
Forget Gladiator Part Deux Ridley needs to revive Taboo with Tom Hardy

Metatron.. sometimes your drive-by ideas are ideas that i'd pay to see. Are you kidding me? A zombie apocalypse with gladiators? Sounds AWESOME!!! Maybe your favorite, Mr. Scott, would be interested in co-creating this film with Zack Snyder. Why not> Sounds like a hollywood blockbuster. But you need to write the script to keep it historically accurate. ;P
I remember when shots of that "half-helmet" nonsense was floating around Facebook and I commented on how stupid it was - the comment was removed for being offensive.
Love your blue nail varnish 😝😜😝
Ridley Scott totally lost his touch in making films last two of his “historical” films were pure garbage
I have to agree, sounds like a money grab with no real depth.
Brilliant video! I love your sense of humor 😂
I think it would be a nice opportunity to go deep into the story behind Caracalla…would also be nice to see the Battle of Nisibis…I highly doubt Ridley will go deep into that direction though…
I am pretty sure that Ridley Scott, has lost his mind.
Didn't Commodus actually fight in the arena though? Plus, he stabs Maximus before the fight to ensure his victory. On top of that, he wasn't counting on the betrayal of the praetorians.

No, he *NEVER* fought men in the arena. He fought animals. Weak, non dangerous animals. Or, alternatively, he would "fight" real wild animals, but they were drugged and bound and he would be throwing weapons from an elevated platform where they couldn't reach him. As you can see, the real Commodus wouldn't be satisfied with merely stabbing his opponent's side before the fight. It's just not safe enough. So yeah, not only he was never in a real fight, not only he never put his life in danger in the arena, but of course he never mixed up with slaves. Slaves were there to serve him. He wouldn't face them as equals. And he wouldn't risk his life against one. Which is ironic, because his murderer was actually a slave (his wrestling instructor).
@Hexensohn

@@happyslapsgiving5421 I've read that he he fought essentially staged or play fights in the arena. Which would still put him at risk of betrayal.
A FANTA-zombi-peplum was actually released in 1964: "Roma contro Roma" ("Rome against Rome" or "War of the Zombies"), directed by Giuseppe Vari. Forgettable and forgotten I think 😅
Sounds Great 👍🏻 I can't wait for it to be shown on TV sometime never
Yeah this newest generation has absolutely the bare minimum of creativity which seems to go towards redoing things instead of coming up with new things
The best historical film Scott ever did was The Duelists; it's absolutely phenomenal and has great attention to period detail. Sadly it's been downhill since.

Gladiator was a great movie, who cares if it has minor inaccuracies. The Duellists is good but Gladiator is better
ok but...heres my thing , we all know the original movie , we all loved it , even with historical inaccuracies the dialogue was delicious , the nods to Roman Virtue were beautifully shown , they forced us to swallow a scenario where Marcus Aurelius secretly wanted Rome to be returned to the republic , none of us ever believed it , we just accepted it as part of the "historical fiction" but now.... the second movie will have emperors in it ? how will they explain that their intentional direction and motivations for the plot of their first movie were completely disregarded and the empire just continued functioning the way it had prior to the death of commodus ? thats just sloppy , there's really not a need to make a second film , he should scrap this and move on to vespasianus , nobody wants to see caracalla anyways , it's foul that we only get a hand full of movies about our beloved ancient Rome and Greece every 10 or more years and none of them capture the essence we were hoping to see , at least with a movie about vespasianus there is real potential to create a historical epic , Gladiator was an accidental gem and in many ways should have never been released , that it worked as well as it did was a miracle and it should die with dignity , but no....they will add color and spice , historical inaccuracies and an impossible plot line that can't connect to the original movie and in the end you'd be more likely to call it " Scotty , an Irish Rome " than you would be to associate it with the original , even Crowe says it's going to suck !
Gladiator 2, Commodus returns! An undead Emperor leads hordes of Draugr from across the Rhine. Only seven gladiators stand between him and total destruction!
I can't wait for Riddley Scott to ruin another historical epic.

Little Caesar's in particular
My favorite film of all time is Gladiator and I am excited for a sequel, because it's Ridley Scott doing it.
All Ridley Scott had to do is a prequel. Russell Crowe could have played Maximus's father, an Iberian landowner who'd gambled away the family's estate, lost everything to a form of Secare Partis. Left destitute, travelling from town to town with his remaining son, Maximus rescues his father from bandits, proving his ability to fight. The father forces Maximus to compete in the local games. He promises Maximus the money will be used to buy back their land. From there, they go on the professional circuit , but instead of saving the winnings, the father [Crowe] gambles it away. In the final battle in front of the emperor, Maximus is set up by enemies to lose badly. so the shamed father steps into the arena and fights on to the death, winning the favour of the crowd and of the emperor, who spares Maximus. Would explain a lot from the first movie. Not hard Mr Scott.
You don't hate Hollywood enough. You think you do but you don't.
Ridley Scott is over. Done. I don't see any point in giving anything made by him the time of day. He holds history in contempt, has no sense for visuals at all and just produces ugly trash.
A sequel to "Gladiator". And they are about to shoot a sequel to 1995's "Heat". To describe out situation i will quote "Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade": -We are pilgrims in an unholy land.
There was an entertaining clip of Russell Crowe being asked about Gladiator 2 during a press conference. He gets rather annoyed and roasts the journalist asking about it because obviously he's not in it and has nothing to do with it.
Instead of yet another Gladiator film. Why not a film about the Roman Social Wars or First Punic War? If it's simply gotta be about Rome....why not go back far and rather deep in REAL Roman history? NOT some kinda blundered up and blendered up, director's "imagining" of Roman history.
@santiagorojaspiaggio

Totally. They could even do the Year of the Five Emperors, civil war that came right after and because of Commodus' death.
Can we just allow some historical inaccuracies for the sake of eye candy?
I feel like the 20+ year gaps between sequels these days is because Hollywood has run out of original material to make.
