release date, cast, synopsis, and trailer
Yes, a sequel to the 2000 film "Gladiator" is currently in development. The film, titled "Gladiator 2," is set to be directed by Ridley Scott, who also directed the original movie. The script is being written by David Scarpa, with Scott also serving as a producer alongside Michael Pruss and Doug Wick.
In June 2022, it was announced that Paul Mescal, known for his role in the TV series "Normal People," was in negotiations to star in the lead role. The story is expected to follow Lucius, the nephew of Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film), as he learns the truth about his father's murder and comes to know Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the first movie).
As of April 2023, the film is still in the pre-production stage, with no official release date announced yet. However, the involvement of Ridley Scott and the progress in casting suggest that the project is moving forward, and fans can expect to see "Gladiator 2" in theaters in the coming years.

Disagree, but it was a good movie. The opening scene was well done (despite some questionable historical things), I always point to that as a great depiction of 2nd-3rd Century warfare-I think it makes up for its historical inaccuracies simply by being powerfully done-I think a scene like that has the potential to get people interested in history. The rest of the movie is good as well though I never thought it was quite the masterpiece everyone else seemed to. I also thought Kingdom if Heaven and even Robin Hood were pretty decent too. Article says "LONG AWAITED SEQUEL" ?? I'm really curious what that statement is based on. I certainly didn't reach the end of the gladiator movie and thought "can't wait for the sequel". Protagonist dies, villain dies, supporting character (gladiator owner) also dies, all arcs are closed. It's not at all left open for further exploration. The story of gladiator was concluded, and it was fine like that. I never thought that it could have a sequel and frankly I would not care to see a follow up to this movie where Maximus is not the gladiator and Commodus is not the emperor.

Hey again, Metatron - I read an interesting comment, regarding the original 'Gladiator' - something I completely forgot about, in the sweep of what ironically felt like bigger mistakes - the premise of a Roman citizen being condemned to slavery/ being a gladiator, without trial. I feel like perhaps you should do a video on the complexities of Roman citizenship; who had it, who could get it- what it meant. It _could_ even be a series- tying into the movie release; the Severan Dynasty (4 emperors/ co-emperors & 2 joint usurpers) - the Women of the Severan Dynasty - the Rome & Roman Empire of the 2nd & 3rd Centuries- what had changed in its' culture, & what was still the same- & any other areas of particular interest... Pretty please... 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺💖💖💖

2:34 The idea that Ridley Scott would put Templars in a film about the Roman Empire circa 200 AD is not a bit far fetched to be honest. 10:58 In the first film he is tattooed on his left arm with SPQR which he later removes by using a sharp rock. That I can remember, no slaves were branded in the 2000 film. 13:09 Having? Have you seen Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood. Scott hasn't found a historical period he can't jack up. Now, full transparency. I was only a novice student of the Roman empire when I saw Gladiator. I loved the film, though I could see some of the inaccuracies. Execution was great. THere is a lot to love. Over the past 24 years I've become much more of a student of Roman history, and while the inaccuracies are still glaring, I can still enjoy the film. THat is not the case with Kingdom of Heaven. Which I loathe with every fiber of my being. Ridley Scott has been on a death spiral of bad films since Gladiator's release. I can't see this being any better.

Part of why I decided to do what I do is because there is such a shortage of good storytelling these days and, while my own storytelling capabilities aren't that great, what I'm really hoping is that by making very old Japanese folktales more accessible, someday some actually creative people will watch them and be inspired to write and make things far better than both my own work and the constant stream of mediocre/terrible nonsense that is constantly shoved down our throats. Here's what it said: _"Gladiator 2" delves into the gripping tale of Maximus' resurrection by a crow, one year after his death in the Coliseum where he killed Commodus. He paints his face in a black and white mask and embarks on a journey fuelled by vengeance. Tracking down the soldiers who slaughtered his family, he blurs the lines between ancient Rome and modern-day Gothic noir, weaving a narrative that promises the same epic scale and emotional depth as its predecessor while adding a haunting twist that will captivate audiences anew._ 😁

What's so frustrating, is that this era (the Severan Dynasty/ Crisis of the 3rd Century) is so very under-represented - I've seen one or two documentaries about Elagabalus, & I think I might have seen one about Caracalla, so I think it would actually be interesting to set a movie about Ancient Rome in this era, rather than the early Empire or Late Republic- but after suffering through Napoleon - I'm not sure I could put myself through that again. Don't get me wrong- flaws & all, 'Gladiator' is a classic- but I feel like I've been burned far too many times -- had someone like my guy Peter Weir made the movie, I know; 1) the flaws would be minimal, & 2) it would not dramatically affect the quality of the story, nor my enjoyment of it. Some people excel at making brilliant movies interweaving history & drama, using the one to enhance the other - & some people, will sacrifice the one for the other- because they think history should be altered to fit their story...

Maximinus Thrax. A story that reads more like fiction than fact -- a giant (like Andre the Giant) barbarian who rises through the ranks, takes the empire for himself, proves that even as an old man he's a powerful fighter. Then someone else proclaims the self emperor, the Senate approves it -- an eclipse is seen across the Mediterranean. The pretender is dead before Maximinus hears he's been deposed. OK, it all ends in squalor and betrayal, but until the end it's as cinematic a story as there could be. Since he served under Elagabalus they can even get their DEI points in.

Or, alternatively, he would "fight" real wild animals, but they were drugged and bound and he would be throwing weapons from an elevated platform where they couldn't reach him. As you can see, the real Commodus wouldn't be satisfied with merely stabbing his opponent's side before the fight. It's just not safe enough. So yeah, not only he was never in a real fight, not only he never put his life in danger in the arena, but of course he never mixed up with slaves. Slaves were there to serve him. He wouldn't face them as equals. And he wouldn't risk his life against one. Which is ironic, because his murderer was actually a slave (his wrestling instructor).

ok but...heres my thing , we all know the original movie , we all loved it , even with historical inaccuracies the dialogue was delicious , the nods to Roman Virtue were beautifully shown , they forced us to swallow a scenario where Marcus Aurelius secretly wanted Rome to be returned to the republic , none of us ever believed it , we just accepted it as part of the "historical fiction" but now.... the second movie will have emperors in it ? how will they explain that their intentional direction and motivations for the plot of their first movie were completely disregarded and the empire just continued functioning the way it had prior to the death of commodus ? thats just sloppy , there's really not a need to make a second film , he should scrap this and move on to vespasianus , nobody wants to see caracalla anyways , it's foul that we only get a hand full of movies about our beloved ancient Rome and Greece every 10 or more years and none of them capture the essence we were hoping to see , at least with a movie about vespasianus there is real potential to create a historical epic , Gladiator was an accidental gem and in many ways should have never been released , that it worked as well as it did was a miracle and it should die with dignity , but no....they will add color and spice , historical inaccuracies and an impossible plot line that can't connect to the original movie and in the end you'd be more likely to call it " Scotty , an Irish Rome " than you would be to associate it with the original , even Crowe says it's going to suck !

My favorite film of all time is Gladiator and I am excited for a sequel, because it's Ridley Scott doing it.

All Ridley Scott had to do is a prequel. Russell Crowe could have played Maximus's father, an Iberian landowner who'd gambled away the family's estate, lost everything to a form of Secare Partis. Left destitute, travelling from town to town with his remaining son, Maximus rescues his father from bandits, proving his ability to fight. The father forces Maximus to compete in the local games. He promises Maximus the money will be used to buy back their land. From there, they go on the professional circuit , but instead of saving the winnings, the father [Crowe] gambles it away. In the final battle in front of the emperor, Maximus is set up by enemies to lose badly. so the shamed father steps into the arena and fights on to the death, winning the favour of the crowd and of the emperor, who spares Maximus. Would explain a lot from the first movie. Not hard Mr Scott.

Ridley Scott is over. Done. I don't see any point in giving anything made by him the time of day. He holds history in contempt, has no sense for visuals at all and just produces ugly trash.

A sequel to "Gladiator". And they are about to shoot a sequel to 1995's "Heat". To describe out situation i will quote "Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade": -We are pilgrims in an unholy land.

There was an entertaining clip of Russell Crowe being asked about Gladiator 2 during a press conference. He gets rather annoyed and roasts the journalist asking about it because obviously he's not in it and has nothing to do with it.

Instead of yet another Gladiator film. Why not a film about the Roman Social Wars or First Punic War? If it's simply gotta be about Rome....why not go back far and rather deep in REAL Roman history? NOT some kinda blundered up and blendered up, director's "imagining" of Roman history.

Totally. They could even do the Year of the Five Emperors, civil war that came right after and because of Commodus' death.

I feel like the 20+ year gaps between sequels these days is because Hollywood has run out of original material to make.
