Gladiator 2 Reveal! - Everything we know (Cast, Sets, Plot, Leaks)

Gladiator 2 was just revealed to be set for release on November 22 2024! Let's cover everything we know about the cast, the crew, the script, the sets, and many revealing leaks. We then cover the history which may inform the plot of Gladiator 2.
The long awaited Gladiator sequel is finally coming after more than 20 years of development. In this video we cover the history of its long production journey. This involves many script drafts with all kinds of crazy plots including one in which Russel Crowe is resurrected as Maximus literally in the same way as Jesus or that he is now in a perpetual loop of reincarnation, fighting in the crusades, in World War 2, in Vietnam, and finally ends up in the Pentagon. Thankfully we know from Gladiator leaks and Gladiator rumors that the actual plot has shifted to a more reasonable sequel set 25 years later with a focus on Lucius rather than Maximus. The role seems to be going to David Scarpa from such works as Aftersun, Normal People, and God's Creatures. Various interviews with Ridley Scott, Russel Crowe, and others have also indicated where they might be shooting that gives us a hint of what is to come.
In the second part of this video I plot a course for the plot of Gladiator 2. This involves reviewing the history of the era to see what the writers might choose to work with. We then review the themes and plot threads which might be carried over from the Gladiator Movie. Finally we bring it all together to theorize on what the final Gladiator 2 plot and Gladiator 2 ending might look like.
Let me know what you think!

To me, seems somehow ingenuine to support something just because it was in the news. There is greater suffering everywhere where money could be better used. It is ultimately solidarity between nations and firstly political diplomacy to maintain good relations and peace, that seems to be the motivation to help this cause specifically. That's just my internal (unrefined) dialogue. Still, one suffering is not greater than another, it is not good to rank order sufferings as each is profound.

Certainly lots of bummer releases but if Ridley Scott can harness some of that "Kingdom of Heaven", "The Last Dual" and "House of Gucci" energy we could get something pretty good that fits the dynamics of the period well. BUT certainly its best to go in with low expectations.

Either the Year of the Five Emperors, the eccentric and decadent Elagabalus surrealistic reign, the bloodthirsty Caracalla, the Year of the Six Emperors (238 AD), the grimdark decades of the 250s/260s or Aurelian's reconquests... Between the Niederbieber helmets wearing ironclad soldiers, the out-of-the-norm personalities of the Severans and the unparalleled power of the Syrian matriarchs of the dynasty like Julia Domna and Julia Mamaea, the unending plots, coups and civil wars, the omnipresence of Eastern mystery cults, the exploding growth of Christianity and its persecutions... It's the IRL Game of Thrones (and much more fascinating !).

They should make like Ryse: Son of Rome, I think that game had everything in there that could be used in this sequel of Gladiator. It serve as something new whilst it slightly deviates from actual history, but I do believe that it would have potential. (Although Ryse is barely realistic). This sequel should be a entirely new film perhaps with some references to the original, a sequel continuing events in the film or actual history probably wouldn't work as well as the original

One thing worth noting, the original Gladiator strayed so far from the history, even condensing the timeline to 180 AD. So really, if they’re thinking of setting the sequel 25 years later, we could see an appearance of Septimus Severus, possibly even Caracalla.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would appreciate a "resurrection" approach to Galdiator 2 just so that Maximus can return. The first film did have scenes of Elysium, but for me they were more for representative and emotional purposes. Whereas having him be resurrected would be a little too 'mythological' for me. When we are first introduced to Maximus, he is already an incredibly successful General and an incredibly popular one with his men and the then Emperor Aurellias. But how did he rise to such heights to begin with? That's the story I would be interested to learn. But Russell Crowe has aged since the first film, so quite difficult to proceed with a prequel. I hope that whatever sequel they go with is logical and not too supernatural in origin. Gladiator did not make Maximus some mythological hero or a demi god for example. So I would hope that Ridley doesn't spoil that feeling just to bring Maximus back.

  • @crazyviking24

The only problem I would see with Lucius as being young and needing a guardian is the 25 year time-line. It would work if you fudge the time-line and have Severus Septimius be the emperor trying to clean out the corruption and combine his son with the senator who buys the throne. I know that the plot is almost identical to the first one but it would give a justification to show the battle in Britain.

And one more twist for the deep ones could be the the wife or Caracalla. weary interesting thing is "Julia Domna is remembered for having encouraged Philostratus to write the Life of Apollonius of Tyana" a "Jesus like" character and probably "real"

I recall that Marcus Aurelius committed suicide by an overdose of some kind because he was dying and I believe his co-emperor died in the Antoinine plague. Both of those details would have been interesting to include maybe as a mention in the sequel to have Lucius recall his father dying of plague and suggest that the official account of Marcus Aurelius death is that he committed suicide to cover up the idea that he was murdered.

To keep Gladiator in the title whether it's 'Gladiator 2', 'Chapter-2', 'Part-2' or Gladiator: [Insert suffix here, they're going to have to do a bit of shoehorning. I've not spoken to a single person in 23 years that has wanted any supernatural/fantastical elements either. It wouldn't be overly hard to bullshit around him surviving. Make it so he didn't collapse and die because of his wounds, he collapsed and went into a coma because Commodus put some kind of poison/substance on the knife he used to stab him with prior to their fight. It let's them cart him off screen and then realize and work on treating him, they can fake his death or equally not fake his death. Lots of ways around it. If they had given him a spear through the heart or chopped off his head it would somewhat harder to plot twiddle around.

Don't like Lucius finding out he's the son of Maximus. The original movie suggested that Lucilla's husband was a good man whom she loved very much. Maximus becoming a Christian? He was a dedicated Roman, believed in the Roman people and the Roman way regardless of the actions of Comodus, "Rome is the light.".

I think there is a really good story there that would be great for a 10 episode drama Roman political dramas or something. Idk if a studio is willing to take that big of a risk. But it is Ridley…. Which gets me going. But as a film unless the studios actually listen to Ridley this time and not pull a Kingdom of Heaven idk if it can be pulled off . I’m definitely stoked to see what they try while also not expecting much. Nothing could ever change the original Idc how many sequels they make. That movie isn’t going anywhere

Please no ressurections and please dont try to make him artificialy younger. He can still be a part of Lucius's life as part of a vision, like a guide and mentor who teaches him wisdom and or give him advice how to handle certain obstacles, just put Lucius in a very stressful situation where he is sick or hurt and hallucinating or he's in a waking dream or something. The first movies was very spiritual and i love that about it, i wouldnt mind Maximus as a kind of spirit helping Lucius, haunting his enemies even after his death.

I have a theory for the second act: Roman Senators would use gladiators as bargaining chips in their negotiating. Think of the race horses of today. If Lucius as Tribute sponsors a Gladiator that could be where he gets in. Also after what happened with Maximus, perhaps Roman Law changed to prevent another Maximus like figure from becoming powerful as a gladiator. Maximus was never a political creature, Lucius is. That is the seperation. Maximus scheme fell apart because it was a military coup not a political one. Lucius knows this. So Lucius will be using poltical and subterfuge to win his battles unlike Maximus.

@Yarp Yarp I'm not defending Hollywood. I just know that blanket generalizations are false. And I know why the people here are making them, and it's for an evil reason. Have you read the reasons why they think ALL Hollywood movies made today are garbage? They're not criticizing the writing, directing or the acting. They're saying they're garbage simply for including non-straight, non-white actors in leading roles. In other words, they're saying that movies are garbage simply because they now reflect the real world, as opposed to the racially and culturally divided mental prisons they choose to inhabit. These people probably also think that the New Testament is also garbage, with all that talk of loving others as you love yourself, doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, and Christ's standard of eligibility to enter Heaven as, whatever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do to me. Anyway, I'm done with this. God Himself could come done and try to convince these people otherwise and be ignored, so why should I think what I post would be considered, using only fact and logic.
