This video is invaluable. Upon inspecting my wheels, I discovered some light rust in the wheel spoke holes. Also discovered some light corrosion on the back wheel. I have two product suggestions which are available on Amazon US. First: Break Free. It dissolves light rust and leaves a PTFE film for lubrication and a moisture barrier. I used the "Precision Shooter" to put a drop at each spoke hole. Second: Eagle One Never Dull metal polish. It is cotton wadding impregnated with a chemical that is magic for removing light corrosion on chromed anything. My wheels look absolutely new! I'm buying a bike dryer! Got to get the water out of the spoke holes.

Good video once again.Blew the conwebs out on a bit of chrome plating history. Old school chroming was with three layers.Copper, nickel and then chrome.Chrome by itself is very porous hence the water goes straight to the steel and rusts the bare metal.I think there is a market for getting these rims, spokes and nipples "properly" done for a really superior finish. We used to fill in motorcycle mufflers with brazing rod and grind them back for the electoplaters for insurance jobs.

All the cleaning, polishing and maintaining of the bike is part of the hobby for me. Bikes have always been more of a hobby than just a mode of transport for me. Good morning Stuart, another premium quality vlog again! It might be worth mentioning (although I am certain you will probably know this from your past), that the problem is that Chrome plating is actually porous, and it's down to the quality of the pre-chrome plating stage and the base metal that defines how good the overall quality of the finished effect is, check out Rolls-Royce for their radiator surround plating for instance, therefore if the base materials or pre-chrome plating is sub-standard the rust will certainly be through in no time. the benefit as you rightly point out of applying a good quality wax after removing any rust spots is that the wax effectively plugs the micro sized holes where moisture gets in and rust becomes apparent, therefore the more wax is used over time to plug the holes the less chance there is for rust to form. It is actually the base metal that is rusting, not the chrome plate, the chrome plate is actually just the crowning glory - but not for long if we don't treat it correctly, thanks again, superb. Nick.

yeah actually nick I have touched on this in other videos. this strictly speaking is just a chrome finish. to be described as chrome plated here it must adhere to a specific British standard, which few products do these days.

Without wanting to hijack these comments I was unlucky enough to collect my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Rally in February, on a day so cold I found myself following a salting lorry for about half an hour and so every exposed surface , especially the chrome and the bare aluminium soon showed signs of exposure . To rectify this on the engine casings I've used Peek Metal Polish and on the wheels Meguires Chrome Polish, which is has been excellent for getting out the worst of the "strains". However I'm thinking that stuff looks worth investing in. I'm going to invest in some and report back. Cheers.

Really enjoy your practical tips. Whilst on wheels, assume all your bikes have tubed tyres so do you use any sealant in the tubes eg Slime, Never Flat? Or do you seal the rims with a sealant tape. Do you carry spare tubes & patches on longer trips? I'm surprised that today tubed tyres are still provided with many new bikes with spoked wheel, particularly modern classics. At least KTM provide a sealed rim for their spoked wheels.

Toothpaste is slightly abrasive. Would that be any use for initial cleaning of chrome? It can remove the glaze you get on old headlights and return them to perfectly clear. Edit: sorry I forgot to say thank you for a couple of useful bits of information in your video. I didn't know that you are supposed to leave the polish on for 15 minutes at least. I have been polishing a panel on a car and then polishing it off straight away. I had wondered if you were meant to leave it on for a bit or rub it off immediately. Also I didn't know that it is a good thing to put three coats on. I thought that a second coat would rub off the first coat. I do use carnuba polish by the way.

I Andrew re the toothpaste ive never actually tried it as I believe in using the right tool for the job. with all waxes you need to allow the solvent to evaporate before buffing otherwise you will remove too much of the wax when you buff. In the old days when you still have steam locomotives they would bag up bag to senders to melt the ice on the roads because they were black and they were to charge the Sun and they didn't trust your cars or anyting and I agree living in Florida I deal with hundred percent humidity 100% of the time and I wish practically everything on all motorcycles with built out of stainless or alloy so you wouldn't have to deal with rust but then your bike would probably last you forever and the manufacturers would hate that

Seeing a trend with Trump quality. It’s not great. Royal Enfield seems to be better quality
