Froome certainly looked every inch the champion there, weaving all over the road.... little did we know what was really lurking inside..

Froome: What am I on? I'm on my bike, getting dropped, as usual. Oh wait . . . .

So how did Froome learn to suddenly ride up a "European hill" between June and August 2011?

You can either climb a hill or you can't. Yes sports people improve but if he really was a gifted climber, then even in 2009 he wouldn't have climbed this bad.

To improve to the degree he has, yes, that is unreasonable. Anyone who isn't VERY suspicious about how clean Froome is either knows very little about cycling or is deluding him/herself. His times so far in the TDF are rivalled only by known dopers (particularly Armstrong - who he is either seconds behind or even ahead of) and his watts per/kg only raise more red flags. We have only seen dopers perform at this level, so if he is clean, then he is potentially the greatest athelete of all time.

Wasn't this the one where the Barloworld team car also broke down and they had to push it up the hill? Looks like a classic case of being over-geared to me. I remember in the mid-1980's when they briefly resurrected the Tour of Britain and one stage went up Rosedale Chimney. All the Brit riders knew the climb (33% in places) well and geared accordingly but the continentals all scoffed at the piddly British hills and so had normal ratios. The TV pictures were so funny....the British riders all shot up the climb whilst the French and Italians weaved from side to side with some reduced to walking. So far as Froome is concerned you also have to remember that for some time he was suffering from that parasitic blood disorder. Even at Sky they couldn't work out how someone could go from being a virtual world-beater to a total hack almost on a daily basis.

Froome may well have had Bilharzia, but his supposed treatment for it is not the reason he went from a donkey to a racehorse.

Froome knew how hard this climb was and asked Barloworld mechanics to fit a 27 ring to which the guy said he didn't need it and to stick with the 25 that was fitted. The result is Froomey weaving across the hill because as predicted his gear ratios were wrong. Never doubt the guys climbing ability based on somebody else's mistake. At least at Sky he was listened too, regarding his bike set up at least.

I don't think the gearing would have mattered. I have ridden this brutal climb. It's relatively short but very steep. This suits the one-day Ardennes-type race specialists like Gerrans, Gilbert, Martin, etc. Froome is excellent on long mountain climbs where he can dial in an infernal tempo.

repsa you missed the point of that post :) What brilleaben means is that you can see Froome in the background at 8m in the movie struggly badly to hang on and bring dropped by some awful riders (not Gerrans). Then Sky hires Dr. Leinders and donkey Froome instantly becomes a racehorse. So brilleaben is sarcastically asking when that's going to happen to Gerrans

Gerrans is good in the hills but not in the mountains or time trials so he will never win a GT.
