Stage 5 of the 2009 Giro d'Italia ended in a uphill sprint between Menchov and Di luca. Ivan Basso tried his best to set a hard tempo but it all came down to af sprint among the GC favourites. Lance Armstrong making his grand tour cameback was of the pace and was dropped.
