Being old enough to be apart of this era, seeing and hearing the music scene shift because of this one song was something to behold. Even fashion changed. I’m still coming to terms that newer generations haven’t heard this song.

And even the following transition was remarkable.. I remember seeing 311, Deftones, Goo Goo Dolls, and Sublime in 94, I believe (maybe 95)... MTV was still grunging out, but they didn't know that grunge was dead. None had videos yet. There was so many good non-grudge early 90's (college) Alt that was eclipsed by this also.. like Screaming Trees, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Fugazi, Belly, Jane's Addiction, Sonic Youth, Collective Soul.. I remember hearing these in vinyl shops and around artsy people in the party districts... more so than Pearl Jam or Nirvana.

@@MaddyReactions Here's what Genius wrote about it: Rock history recalls Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill scrawling the phrase “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” in spray paint on a wall, from which Kurt took the title. Some say Kurt took it as a call for a revolution, in reference to the Bikini Kill-led riot grrl movement; but according to producer Butch Vig, Kurt just thought the phrase “was stupid,” and it didn’t really mean anything at all. However, it was later revealed that Hanna was referring to the brand of deodorant worn by Kurt’s then-girlfriend and Hanna’s then-bandmate Tobi Vail.

yes, and Dave Grohl said in one interview, that he with Kurt woke up after some party and when he came to bathroom there was written by lipstick on the mirror - Kurt smells like Teen spirit. Anyway, Kurt Cobain didn't know that it's actually the name of the doedorant, but he told to Dave...what phrase "teen spirit" it's cool... and after Nevermind boom some journalist ask him..."Kurt why did you wrote the song about a deodorant?" and Kurt was like...I did? what song? :)

Firstly, when you're reacting to a song like this, when you pause to comment, it's always more appropriate if you rewind slightly when you press play again to keep the flow of the song intact. Anyway, this song has A LOT of cultural relevance in the music scene --- it was the song that brought Grunge Rock into the mainstream in late 1991....the song and the band that pretty much ended the 1980s "Big Hair Glam Rock Boomer bands" that were dominating the heavy metal scene up until that point. With the release of this song in late 1991, Nirvana perfectly encapsulated the arrival of 'Generation X' apathy and teen angst. As a music reactor, with regards to the rock genre, I'm sure you would've noticed a general change in tone from the Heavy Metal music that dominated the 1980s (Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Def Leopard, Guns N Roses, Poison, ACDC, Whitesnake etc), vs the sudden demise of those groups by the early 1990s, and the rise of Grunge Rock and other Alternative Rock. Btw, although Nirvana brought Grunge Rock to the mainstream in late 1991 with the release of this song and their album, Grunge Rock actually began in the mid-1980s in the underground music scene. And ironically, the first Grunge Rock band to have a hit on the billboard charts (not a top 10 hit or anything), was "The Pixies" with their song "Where Is My Mind" in 1987. In fact, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana had often said that his group (Nirvana) style of music was heavily influenced by 'The Pixies'. The Pixies only real problem that prevented them from huge mainstream success was that they were a band that was a decade too early. They were ahead of their time...lol

I believe Kurt himself said the lyrics are your puzzle, whatever they might mean to you. As I understand it, they were always the last part of the songs he wrote and a lot of the times he just grabbed random lines from notebooks of poetry he wrote to throw in the song at the last minute just to get it recorded. There's even one song where the lyric basically says I just have to write one more line then I can go home.

My understanding about the video was it was supposed to be a teenage angst Pep Rally.. kids taking over the school.. I believe he got the inspiration from a movie in the 80s can’t remember the name.. Teen Spirit was a popular deodorant at the time and someone had sprayed the phrase “Kurt smells like teen spirit” on the wall, referring to Kurt smelling like the girl he was seeing.. but Kurt thought it was some teen rebellion phrase and was unaware about the deodorant until after the recordings .. something along those lines .. lol

@@MaddyReactions It's just a set of opposites. A mulatto is the opposite of an albino (I guess?) and a mosquito is tiny, while his libido (sexual appetite) is very large. :) Kind of silly, but also kind of brilliant. "Teen Spirit" was a deodorant brand at that time and he heard someone mention it. He inserted it into the title as sort of an inside joke, although you could delve deeper and say it was a comment on how products are marketed to teens by corporate entities of an untrustworthy nature (like, for example, big record companies!).

Nirvana did make the ‘grunge’ sound popular in the ‘90s though there several other bands from the ‘80s that were considered ‘grunge’ such as the Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Green River... it’s somewhat of a strange spectrum of musical genre since it’s an incorporated blend of punk/metal/rock... bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, Alice In Chains are all considered ‘grunge’ but they all have their own similar yet distinct sound

That’s absolutely not true - he hooked up with a ‘good girl’ outside of his circle do a girl within his circle spray painted “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on his bedroom wall to rip on him. Teen Spirit was a deodorant marketed to high school girls but he didn’t know that, he thought it was a deep thought. “Here we are now, Entertain Us” is something he used to say when he entered a room as a joke. He just married the two phrases, some of the lyrics are nonsense to fit within the verse structure (this is how Paul McCartney writes lyrics he just changes them later, Kurt didn’t change them). Some of the lyrics are about heroin, and some mean absolutely nothing.

My libido a mosquito is part of that phrase. Alot of what Kurt wrote was indeed nonsensical. Words that have sounds that fit. But also I think its making fun if himself as well as the ridiculousness of the song. Its almost too perfect of a riff isnt it? But lets take it further. Young guys in their early 20s: “Oooo wow..look at her…! “Wait is that a mosquito that flew by?” Attention span of a gnat at that time and everything ran by hormones. Its funny.

As with most of kurts lyrics, its both cohesive and nonsense depending on the intellect of the individual reading them.

and this is the song considered nº1 by the world critics as the best rock/metal song of the past century.... its a joke, really, it is, not even top 10 (to be gentle), you dont even want to understand the words, what he's saying is so stupid it can't even be categorized, i'll say again and again NIRVANA were overrated and they are only remembered cause Cobain shot himself... there...said it....Hell like someone said the drummer we never heard from was more successful with his unknown band than Nirvana... :WWW
