The right answer would have been "you mean behind all that hair"... I knew but there was much to ID him by from those 2 seconds. Also, I can totally relate trying to teach my 8 and 11 year old daughters about 80s 90s music. They made me proud last weekend when my wife and I were watching Netflix and they suddenly turned on Rammstein and started rocking out.

I'm Dutch, I can't speak for other countries, but in my country Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was and always will be THE soundtrack of the 90's generation. And not just for the Grunge-kids of that era, but for all who were teenager in that particular decade.

When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the album "NEVERMIND" came out, in 1991, everything in the world music became "before" or "after" NIRVANA. It was immediately understood that it would mark a generation, but today it's not surprising that it has become a milestone in world music. And I was there, as a teenager in those fabulous years! 🤟🎸 Cheers from Italy! 🇮🇹🍕🍝☕️💚🤍❤️

What makes Nirvana stand out is Kurt's writing. Underrated as a writer. That is why they are one of the best. You do not define a generation with your music, you define it with your words. Like Dylan. Like Beatles. Beach Boys. Etc. The best had the best writers.

There are many many many good bands nowadays. Rock is in a reeeeeaaaally good place now, kinda underground, but growing in nowadays youth. It's like, kids from 14-19 are listening to vinyl, cassettes, deepley in love with 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s rock scene, but going more with the underground vibe. Rock wasn't made to be killed, but to evolve and last until humanity dies.

Her name is the title of a Grateful Dead song and she has a wide range of musical tastes just like I do. Music was often our only connection during her very difficult teenage years. You are doing a huge thing for her teaching her the things you are. Bravo. You got my subscription with “Creep” and I am loving your reaction videos. 👏👏👏✌️❤️🎶

As years pass it becomes more and more difficult to understand where yesterday went. For me, hearing Nirvana on the "Classic Rock" station is confusing, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, The Who, they are "Classic Rock" to me, but then I think, it's 28 years gone by since Smells Like Teen Spirit came out, and that sure enough makes it "classic rock"

The performance you refer to when he messes it up is from the UK when they did "Top of the Pops". Famously, most acts were told to mime singing and playing the instruments and KC took exception to this. On this occasion, they were told to mime the instruments, but he was allowed to sing. Him being weird and messing it all up was his protest at being told they had to mime. He was a great proponent of live music by all accounts.

Next I know, Nirvana's "Nevermind" album comes out in '91. Even more awesomery, as far as I'm concerned. This played all the time. Next I know, Badmotorfinger gets into the collective conscious. "Kurt smells like teen spirit" got spray painted on his bedroom wall by one of his girlfriends friends because his girlfriend wore teen spirit deodorant, however Kurt had no idea it was a brand of deodorant and thought it sounded cool, and it was years later someone pointed out to him that teen spirit was a deodorant.

I left Seattle in 1984 when it had a thriving, if isolated, rock scene -- you could do or see pretty much ANYTHING on any given night and there was a little string of all-ages clubs that stretched from the Kingdome up against the train tracks and the International District. I have some amazing memories of this period, much to the detriment of my high school class schedule. I went away to school in Eugene OR and eventually landed in Portland, which had its own nascent scene bubbling. After a year doing sound at Satyricon, I figured it was time to start my own band so I recruited players from the bands I regularly worked with and grabbed some other friends who were just starting THEIR bands and we set up a show. Not being dummies, we knew we needed a headliner and there was this new label up in Seattle called SubPlop or Pop or something and they agreed to send their "best" band down (a group called CatButt, whom we all thought would sell a THOUSAND copies of their next single, which seemed like shooting the moon at the time). At the last minute CatButt cancelled and SubPop said they were sending some band from Aberdeen....called Neeeervana. The show was at a short-lived place called The Blue Gallery and it was during the Rose Festival, the big civic to-do. We had made the incredibly bold decision to concentrate our promotion on the visiting Navy fleet, the idea being to attract hard-drinking sailors for an epic crowd. We KNEW our girlfriends would come but weren't too sure about anything else. Little did we know that the sailors were prohibited from venturing deep into town (their superiors wanting to keep them out of the gay district a few blocks over from the club) so we DID play the show to ourselves and about 24 of our best friends. Nirvana showed up a bit late but proceeded to play the most blistering set of rock'n'roll I had ever experienced. At times they seemed to levitate onstage, white light shooting up the cords of their guitars and pushing them off the ground. We were all literally agog, jaw-dropped, gob-smacked. They ended their set by destroying the stage and got back into the beat-up van they had arrived in and simply drove away into the night. That night changed my life and although I've seen thousands of shows since then (and some really amazing bands playing in improbable situations) I've never seen anything like that show. They came back and played Satyricon pretty soon, and again, and then it was The Fox Theater (maybe 1500 capacity?) and then they were gone, launched into the stratosphere where they self-destructed. The most amazing small club band ever.
